yeast infectionsVaginal yeast infections, also called Candida infections, are typically caused by the Candida fungus. During her lifetime 75% of all women are likely to have at least one or more infections.

Women tend to be more likely to get yeast infections it if their bodies are under stress from poor diet, lack of sleep, illness, when they are pregnant or taking antibiotics. Women who have immune suppressing diseases such as diabetes or HIV infection are also at higher risk of having a vaginal yeast infection.

Symptoms include vaginal itching or sore enough, thick white cheese like discharge, learning or discomfort around the vaginal opening especially during urination and painful or uncomfortable sexual intercourse. Physicians often diagnose this problem using both a physical examination, medical history as well as a vaginal swab and microscopic evaluation. This vaginal swab with microscopic evaluation is the most cost-effective means of diagnosing a yeast infection of the vagina.

Physicians estimate that with proper treatment 90% of vaginal yeast infections are keyword within two weeks or less. Often times the women will report that they have little to no symptoms within a few days. There will be a small number of people who have repeat infections and usually these will improve with repeated treatment.

However there are those individuals who will suffer from repeated episodes of vaginal yeast infections which may be caused from a systemic yeast infection. These systemic yeast infections are not always a symptom of an immune suppressing disease but women who suffer from systemic infections should be evaluated for diabetes or HIV.

There are two routes for treatment potential. The first are home remedies which are treatments which can usually be purchased at the grocery store or the health food store. If a woman is a reasonably sure that she has a yeast infection then beginning treatment at home is a very real potential. The number one choice of do-it-yourselfers everywhere is yogurt. This treatment is so common that even some professional medical physicians will recommend it. Unfortunately it is also probably the messiest.

Yogurt works because it is full of Lactobacillus acidophilus which is a bacterium also found in healthy vaginas. This bacteria will kill the yeast by producing hydrogen peroxide. Most women use this treatment by applying it directly to the vulva and gently injecting into the vagina.

Another home remedy that is often tried is garlic. Garlic contains a natural anti-fungal that kills off the yeast and is not nearly as messy as the yogurt. Using a fresh clove of garlic carefully peel all the paper a skin off. Next, wrap the clove of garlic in a piece of gauze or cheesecloth tying the end with unwaxed dental floss. Leaving a bit of string dangling so that it can be removed later insert me garlic cloves into the vagina. Leave it there for several hours at a time and be sure to remove it leaving it in for no more than eight hours.

More at Aston is another remedy that has been used by women to kill yeast. It can be purchased from the pharmacy or natural foods store and used as a suppository. The heat and moisture in the vagina will melt the capsule and release the boric acid. Another method which may be used in conjunction with all methods is the use of cranberries.

Cranberries are often used in treating urinary tract infections because the vagaries contain a substance that inhibit the bacteria from clinging to the walls of the urinary tract. Cranberries also lower the pH of the urine which can be useful in helping to combat yeast infections. Because the urine passes over some of the infected parts on its way out as it can be an adjunct of therapy when used with either medications or home remedies.

Various anti-fungal medications are still available over the counter and calm in either cream forms, tablet were suppository. Most of these over-the-counter medications contain miconazole, clotrimzole or vutoconazole. Other products may contain antihistamine or topical anesthetics which only mask the symptoms and do not treat the underlying problem. Women who have read currying or chronic infection may need to be treated with prescription medication from the physician.

Most physicians prefer to re-vaginal yeast infections with vaginal tablets were suppository rather than oral medications. Oral anti-fungal medications cause side effects such as headache, nausea and abdominal pain while vaginal treatment is unlikely to cause any side effects. This is because the medication is delivered directly to the site of the infection. Oral anti-fungal medications are also not recommended for use during pregnancy.

While vaginal yeast infections are here at hating and problematic they are not debilitating and have no long-term problems. However, women who have chronic yeast infections may find that they also have systemic yeast infections that must be treated using both dietary changes and his oral anti-fungal medications to completely clear the infection.
