Every time we go into a department, drug or grocery store we see shelves and shelves of products claiming to be the fountain of youth, the cure for dry skin, oily skin, acne and world hunger. Add to this the products formulated by pharmeceutical companies and we come down to one, simple question. How do you choose?

While I am one of the women who tends to experiment with different skin care products and tricks, there are a few things I know to be true that I thought I’d pass on.

Nutrition

* Drink PLENTY of water. I know, I know, you’ve heard it before, but it’s true. Water hydrates the skin as well as the body and essential for good health as well as beauty.

* Eat brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Substitute snacks of cookies or chips with an apple, fresh broccoli sprinkled with Olive Oil and lemon, a spinach salad, etc…you get the idea.

* Are you a coffee drinker? I LOVE coffee and when I was first told to do this I thought “Oh, no way, I can’t”. But, I could and I did – it was actually easy! Substitute half of your cups of coffee for cups of Green Tea (I sweeten mine with a bit of honey). Green Tea has too many health benefits to list, including good stuff for your skin – AND, it has some caffeine, so you won’t get the headaches that can be associated with caffeine withdrawal.

* Cut down on anything with high saturated fat (fried foods!) and refined flours and eat more fish (especially Alaskan Salmon), turkey and chicken. Diet IS linked to acne – no matter what the ‘experts’ may say. Want to know more? Check out Dr. Perricone’s site.

Exercise

* I have one tip here – YOGA! Yoga’s health benefits are enormous, but where it applies to our looks includes lowering stress, boosting metabolism, increasing circulation, and benefiting the immune and lymphatic systems. It is an exercise that anyone can do – you start slow and keep going. And, it’s an activity that you will actually look forward to, I promise!

Supplements

* Fish Oil and Flax Oil - besides providing great benefit to the cardiovascular system, fish and flax oils also help keep your skin and hair soft and healthy.

* Alpha Lipoic Acid - Alpha lipoic acid, also known as lipoic acid is a powerful, natural antioxidant slowly becoming recognized as having some unique properties in the therapy and prevention of a broad range of diseases. We have all heard the term “free radicals” in connection with youth and aging. Antioxidants are what help battle these free radicals and keep us healthier and younger looking.

* Biotin - Contained naturally in foods such as cheese, raspberries, eggs, liver, chicken and avocados, most people get enough biotin in their regular diets without ever having to worry about a deficiency. The function of biotin is to help the body make use of essential folic acids, pantothenic acid, protein and vitamin B-12. Although very rare, biotin deficiency can cause fatigue, hair loss, depression, skin rash and skin discoloration.

* A good Multi-Vitamin – A solid multi-vitamin will help you get all of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals you may need. Although, remember, the best way to get what your body needs is by eating right!

* Vitamin B-Complex – Over 60 different bodily enzymes require vitamin B6 to perform properly. In addition, vitamin B12 relies upon its B cousin for assistance in adequate absorption into our bodies. Vitamin B6 promotes healthy skin and hair; therefore, it is not suprising that a B6 deficiency could easily lead to a skin disorder. B6 supplementation treats common skin conditions such as:

1). Eczema

2). Dandruff (Seborrheic dermatitis)

3). Psoriasis

4). Acne

5). Dry Skin

6). Hair Loss

VITAMIN B-1 (Thiamin)

A necessary vitamin in order for the body to convert carbohydrates or sugars into energy, thiamin can be found naturally in such foods as honey, eggs, brown rice, tomatoes, mushrooms and whole grains. Other important functions of thiamin include promoting the body’s metabolic cycle and energy levels, as well as aiding in the production of blood formation and maintaining the normal functioning of the nervous system.

VITAMIN B-2 (Riboflavin)

A necessary vitamin to stimulate the body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins, vitamin B-2 or riboflavin also promotes the production of antibodies and red blood cells and maintains the functioning of cell respiration. Riboflavin has also been found to promote good eyesight, as well as healthy skin, nails and hair. Commonly found in foods such as almonds, cheese, eggs, honey, leafy greens, liver, wheat germ, nuts and various vegetables and legumes.

VITAMIN B-12 (Cobalamin)

Found in fortified soymilk, meat, eggs, poultry and cheese, vitamin B-12 or cobalamin plays a crucial role in concentration, balance and memory. Vitamin B-12 is also necessary for the body’s production of red blood cells and in metabolizing fats, proteins and carbohydrates, as well as stimulating growth in children and encouraging the healthy functioning of the nervous system.

VITAMIN B-3 (Niacin)

Contained naturally in a variety of foods including avocados, barley, bran, eggs, whole wheat, poultry, fish, peanuts and peas, vitamin B-3 or niacin plays a crucial role in the body’s synthesis of sex hormones, as well as maintaining proper blood-sugar levels and encouraging normal brain and nervous system functioning. Used in the treatment of high cholesterol and in reducing high blood pressure, B-3 also plays a role in metabolizing fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

VITAMIN B-5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Found in a variety of food sources including soybeans, peanuts, cashews, lentils, eggs, avocados, mushrooms, red chili peppers, meats and whole grains, vitamin B-5 is also known as the ‘anti-stress vitamin’. Two important functions of pantothenic acid include synthesizing the body’s antibodies to stave off infections and increase the body’s resistance to stress and the production or release of energy from fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

VITAMIN B-9 (Folic Acid)

Found in asparagus, dark green leafy vegetables, beans, kelp and brown rice, vitamin B-9 or folic acid plays a crucial role in the body’s RDA and DNA synthesis, thereby promoting cell growth and reproduction. Other functions of B-9 include the production of red blood cells and the release of energy from protein. Vitamin B-9 is also known to prevent heart disease and cancer.

Topically

* Cleansing – At the very least use a mild and gentle cleanser such as a Dove beauty bar. If you want a cleanser that ‘works’ for your skin, get one with Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C and DMAE.

* DMAE Cream – This is a must and be sure to get one that also has Vitamin C and Alpha Lipoic Acid. The combination of Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester and DMAE Cream has been proven as an unbeatable anti-aging skin care treatment. DMAE Cream has been called “face lift in a jar” by some skin specialists. It helps firm and tighten facial and neck skin. With continued use, it helps strengthen and stabilize cells’ plasma membrane for a more defined youthful appearance.
