A drop of pennyroyal essential oil on your dogs collar can help repel fleas. Don’t go overboard because your dog’s sense of smell is 50 times stronger than yours. You don’t want to drive your dog crazy with it.

Melt together pennyroyal-infused oil, beeswax and coconut oil. While wax is melting, put distilled water and borax in a pint jelly jar, and microwave for less than a minute, to dissolve borax.

When beeswax is melted, pour oil/wax mixture into borax/water mixture, and stir to blend. Add all the EO’s, then put the lid on the jelly jar and SHAKE vigorously. Shake, then check, until mixture starts to become a cream (it wont take long).

Preparation: Put 2 ounces of witch hazel into a lotion or spray bottle. Add 60 drops of citronella essential oil. Label properly. Shake well before each use.

This is approximately a 5 % dilution. For a 10 % dilution add 120 drops of citronella. Witch hazel extract is non-drying and medicinally soothing to insect bites. You may use olive oil, rubbing alcohol, vodka, or prepare a lotion in place of the witch hazel.

How can we include a little ‘Trip Insurance’ to our already overstuffed carry-ons or mini-vans? Aromatherapy has an answer with some readily-available essential oils.

Motion sickness, bug bites, digestive difficulties, and general travel weariness – to name a few – are common discomforts experienced when venturing away from home. A small collection of inexpensive essential oils can provide great relief from these amusement-threatening ailments.

‘Treatment’ with these oils is simple – ranging from inhaling a little oil from a tissue, to adding to a bath, to drinking a drop with a warm cup of water. And, thankfully, relief often comes quickly because of the oils’ powerful properties and compatibility with our own bodies.

Peppermint and Ginger Essential Oils – Tummy Troubles and Clearing the Head We’ll begin with ‘getting there’ – any trip starts with traveling. By car, boat, plane, or otherwise, motion sickness commonly effects many people, particularly children. This can easily make the ‘traveling’ portion of your experience absolutely no fun. Enter Peppermint essential oil.

Peppermint has long been used to calm uneasy stomachs, and is easily used. One drop (it is strong!) in a cup of warm water, sweetened if you like, can be sipped before and during the voyage. For the fussy ones, a drop can be added to a small amount of honey and taken from a spoon for the same effect.

Ginger essential oil is also known for it’s calming of upset stomachs – a little inhaled from a tissue or diluted in a carrier oil and rubbed on the abdomen can bring relief. One can also add a drop of ginger to warm water and drink as a strong tea – this may be effective for some food-related stomach issues as well, particularly when combined with the abdomen massage method.

Peppermint can also be uplifting to the weary driver or passenger – a drop or two placed on tissues in the car or near your seat will release the aroma into your surroundings. Be careful with this oil however, as getting it on sensitive areas of the skin (directly under the nose, and certainly near the eyes) can cause irritation. Tissues with the oil on it should not touch these areas directly.

Lavender Oil – the Great Soother

Lavender has been called ‘a medicine chest in a bottle’ due to its wide range of effects. The aroma of Lavender is uplifting and relaxing, useful for stress in congested airports or crowded highways. Breathing this very safe essential oil is effective for adults and children alike – inhaling drops from a tissue directly, or from one’s placed in your surroundings can help you and your companions be at ease.

Plus Thyme, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus – Cleansing and Keeping Bugs and Bites at Bay

Lavender essential oil is also an effective wound-healer because of it’s anti-inflammatory, mild antibacterial, and skin-regenerative actions. It can be used directly in case of burns, mixed 50:50 with Tea Tree and put on band aids to prevent infection, or blended with Thyme Linalol and Eucalyptus (2:4:2) and added to a bowl of water for an effective disinfectant wash. Lavender is very useful for treating bites and stings – just place a little ‘neat’ (undiluted) on the affected area.

This versatile oil is also a component of an insect repellent blend comprised of equal parts of Lavender, Thyme Linalol, and Peppermint, and a double-dose of Lemongrass essential oil. A drop or more placed on tissue or cloth about your room can keep the insects out of your space; 3 drops of this blend per teaspoon of carrier oil can be regularly applied to the skin – or you may mix a similar amount into any lotion you may have.

Lavender can be used in combination with Geranium, Chamomile, Peppermint and Eucalyptus oils in relieving the effects of jet-lag. Getting out of this weary state as quickly as possible makes any trip more enjoyable. This requires getting yourself and companions in-synch with local time, having good rest at night and perhaps a gentle lift in the mornings and throughout the day.

To get yourself into the swing of local time, relax and be ready for bed with equal parts of Lavender and Geranium essential oils – Chamomile may also be used in place of the Geranium, and works especially well for soothing children (if they are irritable for ANY reason).

Add a few drops to a bath or use in a massage oil. For a morning eye-opener, do the same using equal amounts of Peppermint and Eucalyptus. You will find these useful at other times when you need a little clarity and lightening-up.

Lemon Oil – the Purifier

Lemon also has some wonderfully diverse uses. It is effective as an antibacterial, but not so strong as to be an irritant. Adding several drops per quart to your drinking water will help purify it, and the water can act as a disinfectant to be used in washing your fruits and vegetables ‘ the need for this certainly depends on your location, but it not a bad idea whenever bacterial contamination may be a possibility.

Further, regularly drinking water with added lemon oil can gently stimulate the lymphatic and digestive systems, helping alleviate that sluggish feeling that often accompanies extended plane and car travel.

Eucalyptus Oil – For Keeping Cool and Cold Relief

Eucalyptus – the Narrow Leaf variety is a favorite – has a great range of uses as well. It can cool the body when too hot, and protect it when too cold. It is found in almost all formulas used to relieve congestion, can support circulation, and bring lightness to a travel-weary head.

Eucalyptus oil can be used like peppermint to uplift and invigorate during long intervals in an automobile. It can be added to a cool bath or used on a cold compress in cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (accompanied by, of course, copious amounts of water and electrolytes!), and used in a similar manner to reduce fever.

Eucalyptus oil may be blended with Geranium as a massage oil (3 drops Eucalyptus and 2 drops Geranium per teaspoon of carrier oil) to relieve heat cramps. For congestion relief, to a drawn bath, add 1 drop Eucalyptus, 3 drops Lemon, 2 drops Thyme, and 2 drops Tea Tree – soak and breathe deeply – or simply add a few drops to a steaming bowl of water and inhale.

These are just a few examples of ways to make your travel experiences more enjoyable with aromatherapy. With a little effort, you can expand your knowledge of these oils, discovering further uses, and find other oils that work well for your particular needs.

These essential oils are readily available, and fairly inexpensive – though caution should be used when buying oils, as some can be adulterated, and others are mass-produced with techniques that may limit their therapeutic benefits. The more pleasant and ‘well rounded’ an oil’s aroma, generally the higher the quality. Your nose will know! And as with any aromatherapy application, start slowly – essential oils deserve a healthy respect.

How to use the Naughty Nits Products?

* Pour 15-20 drops of Eucalyptus oil into a bowl of steaming hot water. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the vapors.
* A personal steam vaporizer inhaler can also be used with smaller amounts of oil and water used.
* Sprinkle a few drops onto a hankerchief and inhale to help clear the nasal passages.
* Place a few drops on the washcloth when showering to allow the hot water to release the vapors.
* Make an atomizer sprayer by mixing 1 part oil to 100 parts water in a fine mist spray bottle (eg. 1 teaspoon eucalyptus oil to 1 pint of water).(An old clean household spray bottle can be used).
* Mix equal parts oil with Baby oil and gently massage the chest, neck and back to help relieve chest congestion.
* Mix a few drops with VICKS VAPORUB (R) to rub on chest or under the nose.
* Add 1-2 teaspoons of oil to a hot water vaporizer or cold air humidifier to help assist breathing.
* Add 1-2 teaspoons to a plastic water trough placed above a circulating hot water or forced air heating system to allow the vapors to fill the air.

SORE THROATS

* A Gargle with warm Salt Water and a drop or two of Eucalytptus Oil will help ease the pain of a sore throat.
* a few drops in a glass of water can also be used as a mouthwash and rinse (avoid swallowing).

MUSCLE ACHES AND PAINS

* Eucalyptus oil can be used mixed with other oils such as Baby Oil, Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil to use as a massaging liniment to relieve aches and pains of muscle stiffness, soreness or cramping.
* The same mix can be used on joints, tendons, and ligaments to help relieve symptoms of arthritis, rheumatism, fibrositis, and sore tendons.

SAUNAS

* Eucalyptus oil can be used in either wet or dry saunas and steam room to provide an invigorating aromatic experience. A word of CAUTION the oil should not be applied directly to hot coals or stones as it is flammable. Dilute 1 part oil to 100 parts water and use in a spray bottle as described. Spray onto the walls and into the air not on the hot coals.

HOME AIR FRESHENER

Glade

* Add equal parts water and oil to refill a used Plug-in GLADE(R) or WIZARD (R) Brand Scented Oil Air Freshener. Plug the unit into a household socket and adjust the vent to allow for vapor dispersement.
*Add the same mix to a candle based aroma or incense vase. (Do not apply any direct flame as the oil is flammable.)
* Add 1 -2 teaspoons to water of Vaporizer or Humidifier when in use during Winter months.
* Soak used Airfreshener wicks with Eucalytpus oil to reuse as air fresheners in the bathroom etc.

FOOT BATHS

* Foot Baths can be prepared by adding 1 teaspoon to the warm water of a foot bath to provide excellent relief to tired aching feet.

SCALP MASSAGE AND HAIR TREATMENT

* A few drops of eucalyptus oil either applied directly to the scalp or

CUTS, SCRAPES and BRUISES

* Dilute Essential oils including Eucalyptus and Tea Tree Oil are good at cleaning, relieving pain and preventing infection to help promote healing of cuts and scrapes. A good solution of 10 drops Eucalyptus oil, 20 drops of tea tree oil mixed in 100 ml of water placed in a spritzer bottle an be used to clean affected skin areas, ease the pain and promote healing.

INSECT BITES AND REPELLENT

* Eucalyptus oil provides quick relief from the pain of insect bites from mosquitoes, noseeums, fleas, sand flies and other biting bugs. Just rub a small amount of the pure oil onto the swollen area of the bite.
* Neat or mixed with Canola oil, Eucalyptus oil can be used as a insect repellent. Blend into 100ml canola oil with 30 drops eucalyptus oil,10 drops of basil oil and 10 drops of citronella oil. Rub over exposed area. .
* A few drops sprinkled on a cloth and placed on the floor may help keep bugs away from food or refrigerators.
* As Eucalyptus oil burns like kerosene it can be used in Kerosene lamps neat or mixed with kerosene to keep flying insects away.
* Eucalyptus oil added to hair shampoos can help prevent head lice.
*Sprayed inside leggings od waders to ward off leeches.

GARDEN SPRAY and USE

* Eucalytptus Garden spray is safe natural and non residual ideal to keep bugs off plants. Mix 1 teaspoonful with 1/2 teaspoon of Dishwashing liquid and mix with 2 large cups of water. (500ml). Spray around seedlings and base of the plants to prevent slugs and snails and onto leaves to keep bugs away
* Soak a length of string in Eucalyptus Oil and wind around the stem of the plant.
* For Garden Pond add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil to a floating artificial flower or lily.

LAUNDRY USES

* Clean and freshen your laundry by adding 1-2 teaspoonfuls of Eucalyptus Oil to each load of wash.
* A popular wool wash recipe used to keep woolens soft and fluffy. Mix 300 grams Pure Soap Flakes with 200ml methylated spirits then add 50ml Eucalyptus oil. Store in a screw capped glass jar. Use 1 tablespoon of the mix per garment to be washed. Dissolve first the amount in warm water then add to wash water. Hand wash or machine wash on the wool cycle. Squeeze and roll in a towel to remove excess water. Keep garment in shape while drying.
* Soak stains, grass, grease, ink etc with diluted eucalyptus about 1 hour before washing.
* You can quickly remove Chewing Gum, paint, oil, grease,ballpoint ink marks from clothes and , shoes using the pure oil.

BATHROOM , KITCHEN CLEANER

* Use the washing machine recipe 2-3 tablespoons per gallon of hot water or
* add 1-2 teaspoons of Eucalyptus oil to the diluted deodorizing cleaning solutions such a LYSOL, PINESOL, MR CLEAN etc. to use as a Bathroom/Kitchen cleaner. The Oil helps deodorize, disinfect and clean the tile, sinks and porcelin areas of the bathroom and kitchen.eg Add 1 teaspoon Eucalyptus Oil, 1/2 cap PINESOL to 600 ml spray bottle to spray and wipe skins, baths and toilets.
* Add this mix or small amount of eucalyptus oil directly to toilet water in the bowl to assist in disinfection.

MOLD AND MILDEW

* The above recipes can also be used in areas of the house where mold and mildew may build up.
* Shoes can be wiped with a damp cloth mixed with a few drops of eucalyptus oil.
* Mildew smelling clothes and linens can be washed by adding 1-2 teaspoons to the wash water.

EUCALYPTUS SPRAY

* A Spray mix can be made-up by adding 1 teaspoons (5ml) to 500 ml of water placed in a spray bottle (a used plastic spray bottle). Use the spray as a general spray for dusting, deodorizing, cleaning to leave a good clean fresh smell. Simply spray and wipe all dust collecting areas with a damp cloth.
* Use the spray on the mattress, bed sheets, pillows and carpet in the bedroom.
* Spray closets and storage areas to ward off bugs and deodorize.
* Spray tables, countertops and benches with this or the cleaning solution. Use spray in the car, boat or campers in addition.
* Spray on glass, mirrors windows etc to use as a degreaser. Wipe with dry or moist towel.

CARPET FRESHNER

* A reported recipe for a Carpet Freshener is to mix 25ml Euclytptus oil with 500 grams of Sodium Bicarbonate. (Baking Soda). Sprinkle on, leave an 1 hour and vacuum. This helps control fleas in the carpet.

AIR CONDITIONERS

* Wash Air Conditioner Filters in soapy water with 1 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil added.
* Spray Eucalyptus Spray into the intake vent when AC is working.

CARS, BOATS, CAMPERS AND RV’s

Many of the above listed uses can be applied to cleaning , deodorizing and freshing the air inside cars, boats, campers and RV’s.

* Soak a used hanging car freshener with a capfull of Eucalyptus oil and reinstall.
* Replace used wick or plastic clip fresheners with pure eucalyptus oil.

PET CARE.

Since dogs and cats have a much higher sense of smell use minimal amounts.

* For Flea control add 1/2 teaspoon to the wash water or a few drops to the pets shampoo. a dry bath using 2 cups of warm water, 4 drops of Eucalyptus oil and 2 drops of cedarwood oil and use a brush on the coat. Wash the bedding with warm soapy water and a few drops of eucalytptus oil. Rinse well. Spray around the sleeping quarters to sanitize and deodorize.
* Liniment rubs for muscle and joints. (use 1/2 strength of human mix.).
* Cuts and scratches can be bathed in dilute oil and water.
* Inhalation therapy using a vaporizer can be used for pets with respiratory problems and lung congestion.

Variation: Insect Repellent Oil for Ticks

10 to 25 drops essential oil of rose geranium. Follow directions above.

Rose geranium works wonders to repel ticks. Other essential oil choices to repel ticks include bay, eucalyptus, European pennyroyal, lavender, lemon balm (citronella), myrrh, rosemary, tickweed (American pennyroyal).

A day camp packing list would include a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and lip balm. Toss in insect repellent, a hat, two filled water bottles, comfortable tennis shoes, sandals, at least one extra set of clothing, and a raincoat or umbrella.

If your child has serious allergic reactions or is taking prescribed medication, they should also be on the list. Give the camp director a note to explain how any medicine your child should take is administered, to ensure they’re aware of your child’s situation and can deal with it properly.

Check to see if the day camp will provide lunch and a snack. If those aren’t offered, pack a sandwich (not peanut butter; most camps avoid peanuts because there are so many children with allergies to them), a piece of fruit and juice in a box. Avoid sending chocolate as a snack, choosing granola or an energy bar as an alternative.

It would be a good idea to bring along a snack when you pick your child up. They’ve been busy all day and will probably be hungry and thirsty. And having a snack available will be cheaper and healthier than stopping through the drive through on the way home.

Overnight camping requires the same basic list as for day camp except more is added. Begin by knowing how long the camp lasts. Many camps are one to two weeks but there are some which are longer. Pack twice as many socks and underwear as the days of the camp if washing machines aren’t available.

Here’s what you’ll need if laundry service is available. One t-shirt for each day of the week, several sweatshirts or a jacket in case it gets cool, a pair of shorts for each day of the week as well as two pairs of long pants, two pairs of long pajamas, two pairs of comfortable shoes (tennis shoes or hiking boots) and a pair of flip flops for showering.

Include toiletries such as shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, biodegradable soap, hairbrush and comb, two wash cloths and at least two towels. Also list feminine supplies if your child menstruates, a disposable camera, and a fishing rod and tackle if fishing is an option. A government-approved lifejacket that fits properly is absolutely necessary if swimming or canoeing is planned.

A pillow, sleeping bag, bed linens, and an extra blanket should also be included. Add a heavy-duty piece of plastic for putting under the sleeping bag or sitting on if the ground is wet. Don’t forget to pack a flashlight with batteries.

As well as things that should be packed, there are some items which should remain at home. These include chewing gum, a cell phone, money, mp3 player or other music device, or handheld video games.

You’ll want to label everything your child takes with their name. Waterproof markers are fine for most things but you can also find press-on labels for clothing. Several pre-addressed and stamped envelopes or postcards are also a good idea along with a pen or pencil to write with. A book or two for down time or for a rainy day would also be good.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)

It is high in sesquiterpenes which can stimulate the limbic region of the brain – the center of our emotions. Chamomile, German (Matricaria recutita)

Spearmint (Mentha spicata)
Action: Anti-inflammatory, calming, astringent, antiseptic, mucolytic, stimulates the gallbladder, promotes menstruation.
Indications: Bronchitis, candida, cystitis, hypertension.
Other Uses: May balance and increase metabolism, may aid glandular, nervous and respiratory systems. May help with acne, stimulate a poor appetite, help bad breath, promote easier labor in childbirth, help with depression, digestion, dry skin, eczema, headaches, intestines (soothes), menstruation (to slow heavy periods), nausea, sore gums, vaginitis, excess weight.

Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi)
Action: Antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, deodorant, relaxing, skin tonic.
Indications: Known for helping in the treatment of allergic skin reactions.
Other Uses: May also help with allergies, candida, indigestion, insomnia, menstrual difficulties, migraine, nausea, rashes, bacterial infections, stress, tachycardia, tension and wounds that will not heal. Strengthens the heart and circulatory system.

Spruce (Picea mariana)
Action: Antispasmodic, anti-infectious, antiparasitic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, hormone-like, cortisone-like, general tonic, stimulates thymus.
Indications: Arthritis, candida, hyperthyroidism, immune-depression, prostatitis, rheumatism.
Other Uses: May be beneficial for bone pain, glandular imbalances, aching joints, sciatica pain. May help support the nervous and respiratory systems, can be stimulating to the pineal, thymus and adrenal glands.
Companion Oils: Wintergreen/Birch, Eucalyptus Radiata, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Ravensara.

Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca ericfolia)
This oil is still under study. It is somewhat gentler than Tea Tree and has been found beneficial for bronchitis, asthma, respiratory infection, cynitis, sinus infection.

Tangerine (Citrus nobilis)
Action: Promotes happiness, helps with anxiety, nervousness.
Other Uses: May help dissolve cellulite, improve circulation and help digestive system disorders, dizziness, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, liver problems, parasites, stretch marks (smoothes when blended with lavender), and fluid retention.
Companion Oils: Basil, Bergamot, German Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Orange.

Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)
Action: Analgesic, antitumoral, believed to help stop bleeding, immune stimulant.
Indications: Respiratory infections, stomach conditions, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, aneurysm, bruises, diarrhea, freckles, gout.
Companion Oils: Wintergreen/Birch, Clary Sage, Elemi, Hyssop, Myrtle, Pine, Valerian, Vetiver.

Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus)
Action: A neuromuscular antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, antifermentation, reduces allergies.
Indications: Colitis, hiccups, intestinal spasms, parasites, rheumatic pain, sciatica.
Other Uses: May be beneficial for abdominal discomfort and spasms, arthritis, digestive complaints, genital and urinary tract infection, nausea, premenstrual discomfort, wounds. It may also balance the autonomic nervous system.
Companion Oils: German Chamomile, Clary Sage, Balsam Fir, Juniper, Lavender, Pine, Rosewood, Orange, Tangerine.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Action: Anti-infectious, antibacterial (large spectrum action of gram positive and gram negative bacteria), antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant, cardiotonic, decongestant of the veins, reduces phlebitis, neurotonic, analgesic, protects against radiation.
Indications: Athlete’s foot, fungal infections, bronchitis, respiratory infections, gum disease, rash, sore throat, sunburn, tonsillitis, vaginal thrush
Other Uses: May help acne, burns, candida, cold sores, inflammation, viral infections, ingrown nails, warts and wounds (promotes healing).

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris CT thymol)
Action: Highly antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, uterine tonic, cardiotonic.

Thyme Linalol (Thymus vulgaris CT linalol)

Tsuga (Tsuga canadensis)
Action: Analgesic, antirheumatic, astringent, blood cleanser, stimulant.
Indications: Treats coughs, respiratory conditions, kidney ailments, skin conditions, urinary infections, venereal diseases.
Caution: Possible contact sensitization from repeated use

Valerian (Valerian officinalis)
Action: Sedative and tranquilizing to the central nervous system. Its warming properties can help with hypothermia.
Indications: Because of its effect on the nervous system, it may help with insomnia, nervous indigestion, migraine, restlessness and tension.
Companion Oils: Cedarwood, Lavender, Mandarin, Patchouli, Petigrain, Pine, Rosemary CT Cineol.
Caution: Possible contact sensitization from repeated use

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)
Action: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, calming, grounding, a rubefacient (locally warming), sedative (to the nervous system), stimulant (circulatory, production of red corpuscles).
Indications: Used traditionally for arthritic symptoms.
Other Uses: May help acne, anxiety, arthritis, cuts, depression (including postpartum), insomnia, rheumatism, stress, skin care (oily, aging, irritated).
Companion Oils: Clary Sage, Jasmine, Lavender, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang.

Vitex (Vitex negundo)
Indications: Extensively researched in Europe for its effects on Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological disorders.

Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata)
Action: Antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, hair follicle stimulator, insect repellent.
Indications: Used traditional by Native Americans to help them enter a higher spiritual realm. Used to stimulate the scalp and as an antimicrobial and antiseptic agent. It is an ingredient of cold-remedy salves used to clear the nose and chest.

White Fir (Albies concolor)
Action: Antitumoral, anticancerous, antifungal, antioxidant, and combats respiratory infections.
Caution: Possible skin irritant

Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
(very similar in chemistry to birch)
Action: Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, liver stimulant.
Indications: Arthritis, rheumatism, inflammation, muscular pain, tendonitis, hypertension, cramps.
Other Uses: May be beneficial for cystitis, acne, bladder infection, gout, gallstones, edema, eczema, osteoporosis, skin diseases, ulcers, urinary tract disorders. It contains an active principle similar to cortisone and is beneficial for bone, muscle and joint discomfort.
Companion Oils: Basil, Birch, Cypress, Geranium, Juniper, Lavender, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile.
Caution: Do not use if epileptic. Possible skin irritant. Skin test for allergies.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
Action: Anti-inflammatory, reduces indigestion, reduces or prevents scarring, promotes healing of wounds.
Indications: Acne, lack of appetite, bladder or kidney weakness, cellulite, respiratory infections, poor digestion, menstrual problems, eczema, gallbladder inflammation, gastritis, gout, poor hair growth, headaches, hemorrhoids, hypertension, liver and menopause problems, neuritis, neuralgia, pelvic and urinary infections, prostatitis, rheumatism, sprains, sunburn, thrombosis, ulcers, vaginitis, varicose veins, wounds.
Other Uses: Yarrow is a powerful decongestant of the prostate and helps to balance hormones.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Action: Antispasmodic, balances blood pressure, regulates heartbeat. It is used in hair preparations to promote thick, shiny, lustrous hair (it is also reported to help control split ends).
Indications: Heart arrhythmias, cardiac problems, high blood pressure, anxiety, impotence, arterial hypertension, depression, mental fatigue, hair loss, labored breathing, insomnia, palpitations, insect bites, tachycardia.
Other Uses: May help balance male-female energies so one can move closer to being in spiritual attunement and allowing greater focus of thoughts, filtering out the ever-present negative frequencies. It may help lower blood pressure, calm rapid breathing, balance equilibrium, ease frustration, balance heart function, help impotence and intestinal problems, shock and skin problems.
Caution: Possible contact sensitization from repeated use

* 15 drops of citronella essential oil
* 15 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
* 10 drops of patchouli essential oil

Mix up well and then apply to exposed skin.

Natural, herbal, non-toxic and non-invasive, flower essences stimulate positive qualities within us. They may be used both sublingually and topically. They have no taste other than the brandy in which they are preserved, nor are they scented. Similar to aromatherapy, they are highly concentrated. A little goes a long way.

Whereas it is important for the scent of the aromatherapy oils to enter the brain — either by way of the olfactory nerves or absorption through the skin — flower essences only need to enter the body sublingually, topically, or around the body, the energy field or the aura, in order to be effective. Since their action is not biochemical in nature, essences do not need to pass through the bloodstream.

Combining the two is remarkably easy. Simply add the flower essence to an aroma diffuser along with the oils. You may also add essences to carrier oils for use in massage or sprinkle them in bath water (sixteen drops per tub). The ratio of essence to carrier oil is always the same: four Stock Concentrate drops to a cup of oil. Only one drop to one quarter cup of oil is needed. Adding more drops to the carrier oil will do no harm. If you add too much, the essence will simply be wasted.

In fact, in the case of administering essences to animals, one effective dosage method is to simply stroke the remedy onto the animal’s coat, feathers, scales, or shell. Some oils are harmful to animals, so be sure to check with a qualified aromatherapist before administering them to your pets. Do not apply them full strength, and avoid the eyes and mouth.

Additionally, some oils are safe when used externally yet become potentially harmful when used internally due to their high concentration and potential toxicity. Diluted tea tree oil, for example, is an excellent insect repellent for the coat of your cat or dog, and is often found in pet shampoos to add luster to their fur, but its numbing quality on the gums is highly unpleasant for them.

A Case Study: The Child Within

A massage therapist, who has evolved her own intuitive approach to working with flower essences and aromatherapy formulas, likes to begin each session with a laying-on-of hands for her client. Once in the person’s energy field, she senses the particular needs at that moment in time. How does she know for certain? “I just do,” she says.

Some time ago, she treated a woman whose mother had died earlier that year. The masseuse selected Spinach Essence — for simplicity, lack of pretense, and nurturing the inner child. She then added it to a small quantity of warmed carrier oil. Halfway through the massage, the woman lifted her head and said, “You know, I miss my mother,” her tears flowing along with the release of repressed grief. Not one inclined to communicate or express her feelings, the woman left the treatment feeling cleansed both physically and emotionally, newly able to articulate her simple needs and inner growth.

In Conclusion

Last week, I spoke with a medical doctor on the East Coast who has been in practice nearly thirty years. She is gradually beginning to treat her patients with holistic therapies and stepping away from medical approaches to illness and disease. She commented, “It’s the flower essences that work deeper, where the transformation takes place.”

Alternative therapies such as flower essences and aromatherapy address subtler states of consciousness where true healing originates. Flower essences and aromatherapy — and indeed all vibration-based tinctures — derive their efficacy by acting as catalysts for our inner transformation. I like the image of essences as pump primers.

Once our life force is activated, their work is done. These herbal remedies do not transform us; they allow us to transform ourselves. They do not change us; they support us in changing ourselves.

Countless massage practitioners and holistic therapists have combined flower essences and aromatherapy for their families, friends, pets, and clients, demonstrating that this union is indeed a perfect marriage.

Pick your fresh herbs. Manually remove any dirt then set them in a sunny place until the herbs are wilted.

Using 1/4 cup as your part, measure 1/4 cup of pennyroyal and thyme, and 1/8 cup basil and neem leaf into a crock pot. Pour in enough olive oil to cover the herbs plus another inch of oil (approximately 1 cup). Turn the crock pot on low temperature and heat the herbs for about 3 hours. An alternative way to prepare your oil extraction is to place the herbs in a clear glass jar and set it in the sun for about five days. Shake it once or twice a day.

When you have finished heating your oil, strain your oil through a cheesecloth lined strainer. Squeeze out as much oil as possible. Measure out how much oil you now have. For each ounce of oil add 10 drops of citronella essential oil and 5 drops of tea tree oil.

Pour into lotion bottle and label.
