Question: from Marc – Does Beta Carotene Increase Risk of Cancer?
The WCRF have recently released the results from the research carried out looking into foods associated with increased risk of cancer. I noticed that Beta carotene is a supplement they found to increase the risk of Lung Cancer and that your Total balance contains 5000IU of this ingredient. Please let me know whether it is still safe to be taking this supplement.
Comment: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life
Joanna will answer this question, but I thought that I should first make a comment. This is another example of a misleading study. There is also a world of difference between taking NATURAL Beta-Carotene in conjunction with many other co-factors such as are present in Total Balance as opposed to taking a synthetic Beta-Carotene as a single stand alone ingredient which should never be ingested in that manner. To suggest that beta-carotene in a natural form in sensible quantities is risky is a bit like saying don’t eat your carrots because you may get cancer. It is nonsense.

Babies can be fussy for a number of reasons. One reason is that their ears are hurting them. This could signify that an ear infection is in progress. Here is some helpful information on ear infections and what to do if your baby shows the signs.
An ear infection is not uncommon in babies. It occurs when there is a build-up of fluid behind the ear drum, or tympanic membrane. In that same area are the Eustachian tubes which are there to drain fluid and maintain our balance. But, sometimes these tubes can get blocked after a cold or an infection in the sinuses.
What are the signs of an ear infection? Well, babies can’t tell you what is happening to them so they cry, but this cry is often accompanied by other behaviors. You may notice that your baby pulls at their ears, leaving them red. Other signs include drainage from the ear, frequent diarrhea, fever and lack of appetite. If you notice these things happening after they have just gotten over a cold, it could be the final piece of the puzzle.

More and more people are turning to alternative methods to treat their medical conditions. For the condition Alzheimer’s there are several alternative treatments currently in use. However, before using any alternative treatment it is best to consult your doctor.
Alternative medicines vary in their dosages and effectiveness. There is no government agency that regulates their formulation or the effects that they may or may not have. Companies can volunteer any testimonials and information from their customers, but are not required to do so.
If you (or a loved one) are already taking medication for Alzheimer’s, introducing alternative remedies into the mix can cause problems. The effectiveness of the traditional medication can be reduced or compromised altogether.
Alternative treatments usually involve using non-invasive therapies, herbal remedies and other supplements. Many have similar results in the body to more traditional medicines, but without all of the side effects. If you are thinking about alternative methods of treatment, here are a few choices.

When kids are small, we want to protect them in any way that we can. Older parents recommend that you keep a newborn in and away from outsiders for the first few weeks of life. It may seem like an old wives’ tale, but is there merit?
No one wants their baby to catch any sort of infection. Newborns are still vulnerable, being only a few days out of the womb. If you want to prevent problems, here are a few suggestions.
1. Wash your hands. Hand washing is very important. We change diapers, feed babies, rub their faces and wipe their mouths with the same two hands. If our hands carry germs, they can be easily transferred to baby. Reduce the risk of germs by washing your hands after diapering and feeding, and before handling baby.
2. Disinfect surfaces that come in contact with baby. Using something like Lysol, let it sit on the surface for a few minutes before wiping. Baby changing tables, playpens, baby baths, plastic changing pads, counters and other surfaces are fair game.

People are apprehensive about getting the seasonal flu, not to mention the swine flu. There is an H1N1 vaccine available. Before you get it, learn about how it works.
The swine flu is a new strain of the influenza virus. It made its appearance this year and has people scared. To limit the spread, a vaccine based on the virus was created. The H1N1 swine flu vaccine is now available to the public.
Some people are at greater risk for the flu than others. These groups are the same as with the seasonal flu. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggests that people in those groups get vaccinated first.
The groups include pregnant women, young children and elderly people. The vaccine can be used in children at least six months of age. Older people are at risk for lots of conditions and the swine flu can prove deadly for them. Pregnant women need to protect their unborn children and their birth can be compromised if the mother contracts the flu.

Herpes Virus: HSV1 causes cold sores. It spreads by direct contact with fluids of a cold sore or skin eruption from someone who carries the virus. HSV2 genital herpes, is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a strain of the herpes simplex virus.
This virus enters the body through small cuts in the skin or mucous membranes.
Pregnant women can also pass this virus to their babies during vaginal delivery. Both men and women can become infected. The condition requires careful management. Once an individual is infected by the virus it remains in the body, usually dormant, until some other factor such as stress, sun, infection, or weak immunity, triggers an outbreak.
Experts do not know exactly what causes the virus to lie dormant for long periods and then abruptly awake. Many think that a weakened immune system is the cause. Therefore, it would be wise for you to keep your immune system strong and under control with a well-rounded diet, lots of rest and relaxation, and regular exercise. This program below assists in acute outbreaks and long term care for HSV1 and HSV2.
