Burn a peppermint candle near you or use it in a diffuser when you need to feel more alive and awake. Peppermint is easy to find and can be mixed with other oils for a great smelling aromatherapy mix. How about using peppermint tea? Color Healing History

The history of color healing goes back over 5,000 years, from the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Native American’s, and Tibetans to present day practitioners and healers.

The ancient Egyptians wore amulets of colored stones. They wore red to treat diseases and building strength, yellow to create happiness, and green to increase Fertility.

Today we use blue light on Newborn babies with jaundice in our hospitals.

We know that some prisons use pink rooms to calm the more violent criminal. Also, many police stations use blue rooms for their interrogations, as the suspect is more apt to tell the truth in a blue room.

Each color vibrates at a specific, individual frequency, as do the glands and organs of the body.

Each color corresponds to a specific area of the body. Color vibrates true to frequency. It never deviates.

Color is like a vitamin. If you had a Vitamin C deficiency you would increase your intake of Vitamin C. If you had an excess of Vitamin C then you would decrease your intake of Vitamin C. Color works the same way.

As an example, if you need to Lose Weight, then increase the color blue in your life. Do you get Migraine Headaches? Then increase the color red or indigo in your life. What about depression? You can decrease the color indigo.

Crystal Therapy History

Developing your sensitivity to extend beyond the normal five senses is necessary to participate in the new dimension of exploration now upon us. Indeed, as we continue over the threshold of our physical world into a mental one, psychic ability may even become necessary to our very survival.

Everyone is equipped from the factory to do this, proven by the fact that we are only using an estimated three to five percent of our natural capabilities. You don’t have to be weird like me or have a near-death experience to awaken these qualities.

If you are new at this and want to give it a shot, go to one of the several crystal stores in the [Hawaiian] islands or find one of the 2,300 coast to coast near your home. Start with any plain, raw (unpolished) quartz crystal shard that you may be drawn to.

There is a saying about crystals: You will be drawn to the one that wants to be your friend. Crystals are never lost but they do find new friends when the time comes. In other words, one that you need to work with will be hard to lose and you will not be able to hold on to one that needs to go to someone else.

To trigger right-brained intuitive thought, simply hold the crystal in your non-dominant hand and study its tip. This works great when you are in a non-thought specific, day-dreaming mode. Vacations and lounging around a pool or on the beach are perfect times for this.

Crystals have a natural balancing and soothing effect, which explains some of their appeal. Humans know instinctively to go to the beach to soothe and balance themselves. Just like a puppy knows to eat grass when he is sick, humans instinctively know that the beach will make them feel better. The sandy beach is pure crystal silica, though less vibrant than larger pieces of quartz crystal.

The precise angle that natural quartz terminates in can be a key to unlock the mind. For those inclined to Jungian psychology, the natural quartz termination is like an archetype symbol to the unconscious. This specific angle, which is accurate within three decimal places, is also what causes quartz to aggravate its surface electrons, providing it with its special energy known as piezoelectricity.

To charge your crystal with the wisdom of a place, simply leave it there overnight. [If you are in Hawaii, preferably on black lava.] Then work with it in the above suggested manner, or leave it under your pillow for a few nights.

To avoid nightmares, pay attention to your na’au (gut feeling) toward the place that you have visited. Heiaus (sacred sites) are full of this information. Be thoughtful as to what may have gone on there. Caution: Do not disturb or take things from these places.

The closest thing in nature to quartz is the gray matter of the brain. When a crystal heats up in your hand or gives you chicken-skin, you are communicating with it, accessing its stored information or feeling its reaction to the environment.

Many of us are familiar with the legend of the Continent of Atlantis. The Atlanteans were a race of highly skilled individuals. The Atlanteans inhabited a society rich with technological advancements, particularly in the areas of medicine, engineering, agriculture, and astronomy.

The Atlanteans used crystals as a healing and curative source. They believed that crystals healed the auric body; healing the auric body would then lead to the natural healing of the physical body.

The penetration of the auric body by the stones and crystals initiated a connection between the energy of the crystal and the energy of the chakra. The theory states that by re-balancing the chakra energies a natural healing of the physical body would occur.

According to Edgar Cayce, the healing of the subtle bodies and auric fields were addressed by the Atlanteans through the use and application of crystals. The Atlanteans were aware of the inherent power of crystals and their energy vibrations. The laying-on of stones was employed as an accepted healing modality within Atlantean society.

Many people who have experienced past life regression therapy recall this technique. The human body has seven major chakra points. The chakra system within the human energy field allows for the ebb and flow of energy, and the reception and distribution of energy. Stored negative energy, held within the body for long periods of time, creates pain, dis-ease, and stress. The unseen energy behind unresolved emotional pain is stored, creating imbalances in the human energy field. The body stores this information, which remains on file within the archives of that particular chakra. When this unresolved emotion is expressed, no mater how gingerly, there is a shift. Rejoice! This shift is the precursor of growth and healing. It indicates a willingness to acknowledge, confront, release, and be free. It is empowerment, and the call to regain personal power through direct confrontation with what has wounded your spiritual essence during this human experience.

Clear quartz crystals are powerful energy tools. Many of us who are involved in this new age, recognize the importance of crystals as healing tools. Crystals have a definite energy field. It is possible to feel the individual vibrations that they emit. Crystals are possessed with remarkable ability to transform, absorb, amplify, and transmit.

Quartz crystals are composed of silicon dioxide. There are also deposits of certain trace elements co-existing within the entirety of the silicon dioxide. The trace elements within quartz crystal affect the color of the crystal, which in turn changes the frequency of the quartz. The addition of the trace elements also changes the vibration of the crystal.

Crystals emit energy. These energy fields exist. They are a point of fact, not fantasy. In a Crystal healing, there is a subtle energy shift that gives way to an opening whereby stored, unresolved emotional energy, evidenced by the body as dis-ease and pain, can be changed. This window of opportunity for change puts healing and personal empowerment into motion, assisting us as we grow.

In a Crystal healing session, semi-precious stones are also used to assist with healing. All semi-precious stones, like their crystal counterparts, emit energy, as well as receive, absorb, transform and trasmit energy. There is a definite vibration and energy within each stone. It is this energy that is used by the crystal energy healer.

Most of the semi-precious stones used by the Crystal Healer are members of the quartz and chalcedony family, such as amethyst, adventurine, agate, carnelian, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, tiger’s eye. The healer is not limited to any of these stones in particular. There are some Crystal Healers who also harness the energies of precious stones, such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. What can one expect on a visit to a Crystal Therapist? In this form of body work, (which falls into the category of energy work), a Crystal Healer can position fifty, sixty, seventy or more crystals and/or semi-precious stones and minerals upon the seven chakra points of the body. Stones are also placed in the hands and feet of the participant who lies on a massage or similar-type table.

Prior to the commencement of the actual laying-on of stones, a brief smudging ritual is performed with sage, to neutralize and bless the area. Relaxing music is played, candles are lit, and blessings are invoked . The Healer may request intervention and guidance from sources such as the participant’s Guardian Angels, Spirit Guides, or Masters. Many healers summon their own personal Masters or Spirit Guides to assist them in this ancient form of body work.

The client is asked by the Healer to take three deep, cleansing breaths. The relaxation state begins and a state of meditation ensues. The Healer places the stones upon the client’s body, particularly upon the seven chakra points. The stones begin to work immediately, vibrating and pulsating.

The vibrations of the stones and crystals increase the vibratory rate of the chakra levels. The increase in the body’s rate of vibration directly affects and influences specific organs, glands, and corresponding areas of function in the physical body. The application of crystals additionally affects the human auric field.

During a healing with crystals, some Crystal Healers use a rattle, a feather, or a gourd to pass through the aura and the chakra points. These ‘tools’ are used to remove and break-apart the stored, unbalanced energy. This stored energy, usually the remains of a life trauma, is swept away as debris. The release of the old, unbalanced energy allows for the entry of newer, balanced energy.

The vibrations raised by the placement of stones and crystals, promote healing by re-energizing the body’s energy fields. Following a Crystal Healing, the vibration of the chakras will have been raised to a higher frequency. This new and balanced energy promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Natural stone jewelry is the rage. Reports of energetic and crystal healings are spilling into conversations with the term vibrational medicine. Gemstones have been used globally as personal adornments, in trade and as medicinal instruments for centuries, so why the interest now?

Ancient information is being recalled on a universal plane touching individual and planetary awareness. Humankind has been intrigued with crystals since the initial glimmer of “ice” in the dirt and we began discovering the many practical gifts of the mineral kingdom.

During a Crystal TherapySM session a client begins to discern what truly is important to them. It is suggested that you should never let anyone touch your crystals. Each crystal should be cleansed before use to clear any stored energy by either soaking it or burying it in the ground.

Soaking: Have everything at room temperature. Soak the crystal in one cup sea salt dissolved in one quart of purified or spring water in a glass bowl. Meditate and ask that the crystal be cleared. Soak from 15 minutes to one full day depending upon how many people have touched the stone. Rinse under cool water and dry with cotton or silk. Burying: Wrap the crystal in cotton, silk, or linen and bury it in a place you feel comfortable. Leave at least 24 hours.

The Egyptians are perhaps best known for their use of pyramid energy to protect the dead. However, for centuries pyramid energy has also been used for healing purposes.

Feng Shui is the science of balancing or the modification of the energy in your environment. When you place a Quartz Pyramid in each corner of a room, you create a balanced energy condition. Historical Uses for Crystals

Stories of the powers and uses of crystals and gems have come down to us from the beginning of time. It is said that crystals were harnessed in Atlantis for power and surgery. In ancient Egypt they were the force that enabled the huge sandstone blocks to be positioned in building the pyramids. Built atop granite, the immense pressure of these stones activated the crystals found naturally in this granite, creating a gigantic generator.

Crystals were used to light the inner tunnels and chambers while the pyramids and Mystery Temples were under construction. Ancient civilizations, particularly Atlantis, used giant crystals to focus laser light. Crystals were used to fly aircraft, light homes, heal, for agriculture, and to focus beams of energy between pyramids, obelisks, temples, stone monuments and all grid points. Each pyramid amplified the energies to “light” Earth. Crystals were used to control weather, to attune initiates, and in radio waves for communicating with home bases in space (the orbiting Mother ships).

Crystals were used to generate energy, which was focused in various ways, not all of which were positive. The Atlanteans used an advanced form of hypnosis in which complex detailed visuals were projected into a person’s brain, either knowingly or not. By doing this, thoughts could be influenced, as could memory banks. Near the decline of Atlantis, the dark priesthood was involved in control over others. They used crystal power to create pestilences and diseases to kill people by projecting holographically the images, fears, concepts, etc., they wanted to impress on people.

They experimented on the populace. Scientists manipulated embryos to create subhuman forms to be used as slaves. Embryo development was arrested with crystal energy and hypnotic suggestion caused the embryos to stay more reptilian, scale-like. (Some people today are concerned that genetic engineering could be used for control and manipulation).

Crystal generators were built which Edgar Cayce called the “terrible crystals.” Many Cayce readings refer to the use of crystals in Atlantis, both for positive and negative uses.

Long ago it was learned that much good could be accomplished in the blood and nervous systems. In Atlantis and other ancient civilizations, the Earth grid system or energy ley lines were understood and utilized. Crystals were employed to accentuate this energy grid system. Crystal energy was used as a focus for other purposes also. Atlantis and Lemuria used ultrasound and other energy forms.

They used mind power by humming or “toning,” and by doing so levitated rock. Crystal pyramids were used like a laser device because they could store and focus energy: sunlight energy. The crystals could encode information to a higher vibration and beam information into a person. The student could obtain the equivalent of a college education from crystal energy.

Lemurians used crystals underground to grow food because they were afraid of the giants living on the surface who were unfriendly and antagonistic. The Lemurians came to spend most of their time in caves, and so needed light energy to grow food. The stored energy from crystals was the source for this light.

In times past, crystals were used to balance harmonies in the body -  to stabilize the flow of prana, to stimulate the chakras, to raise the kundalini energy. Facets of three, five, or seven were used for certain illnesses, while four- and eight-sided crystals were used to maintain balance. Crystals of various colors – red, green, blue, violet, white, etc., were used to heal various illnesses.

Their healing properties restored eyesight to some in the hands of adept healers. Crystals were placed on the eyelids to draw in prana and heal organs inside the body. Much later in history, the American Indian shamans placed quartz crystals over their eyes to help them become more clairvoyant.

The ancient Greeks believed that quartz was “eternal ice” which came down from Mount Olympus, home of the Greek gods. The people used its natural magnifying power to focus the heat of the Sun’s rays in order to start ceremonial fires. According to the famous Roman scholar Pliny, who wrote in the first century a.d., they used the focused crystal heat from the Sun to cauterize wounds.

The ancient Egyptians held quartz sacred, and carved drinking vessels from quartz. When they drank from these cups, the water became imbued with life-giving energy. They mined quartz, and along with many cultures began to carve it into jewelry and a variety of objects, both artistic and utilitarian.

The Crystal Ball

This unique form of quartz found by archaeologists has been found in such distant areas as Peru, Siberia, Australia, Chaldea, Greece, Rome, Assyria, Persia, Japan, and China. The ancient Chinese and Japanese regarded quartz as the perfect gem. The artists who carved spheres were thought to be the most capable of spiritual and artistic purity. They considered the quartz crystal ball the heart or “essence of the dragon,” symbolic of the highest powers of creation. The Chinese and Japanese shared the term sui ching for quartz, which means “water essence,” the source of peace and power.

Tibetan monks called crystal balls the “windows of the gods,” using them as holy objects of great power. The Taoists believed that looking into the crystal’s clarity “crystallized” one’s being, and they considered quartz the “gem of enlightenment.” Buddhist altars included quartz spheres as an invocation of the “visible nothingness” that delineates the duality of the material and spiritual world.

Contemplation of this “visible nothingness” gave rise to crystal-gazing, which has been practiced since time immemorial. Crystal gazers use the spheres as windows to faraway places, the past and future.

Origin of Quartz Crystal

A crystal is a beautiful, perfect form. It contains within it harmony, balance, clarity and perfection. A quartz crystal takes over 10,000 years to form. They come from deep within the Earth’s core, and were formed when the Earth was evolving. Natural quartz crystals, often referred to by ancient traditions as the “veils of the earth,” frozen water or frozen light, combine the elements silicon and water through a lengthy process involving heat and pressure.

They are buried in the Earth, or sometimes in stream beds where they have washed down from higher ground after being dislodged. They are often found near gold. Varieties of quartz crystal, sometimes called rock crystal, are found all over the world. The largest numbers of crystals are mined in Arkansas and Brazil.

Ninety per cent of the Earth’s crust is made up of the mineral group known as silicates, a combination of silicon and oxygen, plus other elements. The simplest silicate is silicon and oxygen – quartz crystal. Chemically, it is the oxide of the element silicon, and its chemical formula is SiO2. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. The crystal structure of quartz is hexagonal with void spaces in geometric trails throughout the crystal.

The name crystal comes from the Greek word crystallos meaning “clear ice,” for the ancient Greeks thought that these transparent rock crystals were in fact frozen water turned into stone. Another legend has it that Holy Water was poured out of the Heavens by God and frozen to ice in outer space on its voyage to Earth. Angels petrified the “Holy Ice” to preserve it as a protective blessing for humanity.

Quartz is the most common mineral found on the Earth. In the world of gemstones, quartz supplies more different varieties than any other mineral. Gem quartzes can be divided into three main groups:

- crystallized quartz
– compact quartz
– cryptocrystalline quartz

Most crystals are formed by the repetitive addition of new matter to a growing crystalline mass. Some crystals have their origin in the magma or fiery gases of the Earth’s interior or in the volcanic lava streams which reach the Earth’s surface. These minerals, which include quartz, are called igneous. They are formed by the solidification of this molten mineral as it cools and hardens. As the molten rock mass cools, the atoms group together to form the essential regularity that determines the shape and composition of the crystal.

Some crystals grow from vapors in vents in volcanic regions. This type of crystal includes sulfur, and is condensed from hot mineralized gases into a solid state as the vapors are escaping from the inner Earth.

Some crystals form from water solutions or grow with the help of organisms on or near the Earth’s surface. These crystals are known as sedimentary minerals, and are formed through the process of mechanical or chemical weathering. Air, water, wind and ice are the main erosion factors involved in dissolving the Earth’s materials that will eventually be cemented together and occasionally crystallize.

Also, new minerals are formed by the recrystallization of existing minerals under great pressure and high temperatures in the lower regions of the Earth’s crust.

These metamorphic minerals undergo structural and chemical changes after the original formation, reorganizing the atoms and creating different textures, compositions and crystals.

We are surrounded by vibrations at all times. Our ears are tuned to receive sound vibrations, our eyes focus on vibrations of light which allow us to see color, and our noses detect vibrations of aromatic molecules which allow us to become aware of scents. The most important ingredient in the Aromatherapy treatment is the essential oil.

Aromatherapists and perfumeries use musical language to describe scents. We talk of essential oils being a top, middle, and base note. About a century ago, a perfumery named Piesse arranged scents on a stave, or musical scale, and this went some way to describing the vibration of scents.

Aromas were also described by color. Scents can be described as ‘green’ or ‘blue’ or perhaps ‘vivid red’, and we mix scents as we would, color on an artist’s palette.

Historically, the sense of smell has always been important to man and to his survival. A newborn baby recognizes his mother mainly by scent until his eyesight improves and he learns to focus.

To early man, his sense of smell was every bit as important as what it is to animals. Humans and animals alike emit pheromones (from the Greek ‘pherein’ to carry and ‘hormon’ to excite) which attract, repel, identify or mark territory.

Human pheromones are chemicals manufactured by the apocrine glands and radiated into the air around us. The scent of these are detected by the people in our immediate vicinity and play a large part in sexual attraction. Although we are all radiate pheromones and react to other people’s pheromones, this function takes place on a subconscious level.

As the pheromones we produce are affected by fluctuations in other hormone levels, they can indicate our emotional state. For instance, the surge of adrenalin produced in times of anxiety can produce a smell of fear. Animals are highly receptive to scents and can easily detect emotion in humans.

Apocrine glands are also located on the soles of the feet and pheromone molecules can remain on the ground for up to two weeks. Primitive tribes have, until comparatively recently, detected the proximity of other people by sniffing the ground.

It is only the process of ‘civilisation’ that has blunted our sense of smell and with it our innate knowledge that scents produce profound responses within us.

Although early man used his sense of smell for survival and reproduction in much the same way as other animals, our present culture pays little attention to the sense of smell in its natural, emotional, feeling sense. We mainly use the sense of smell in a cosmetic way. Spraying and powdering ourselves to remove or mask our natural scents. We have for so long subdued our senses by the constraints of reason and the rational mind, that we have lost touch with our spiritual nature. We no longer give freedom to the inner, unseen realms of the mind and the subtle communications of the psyche.

The importance of the effects of scents on the human psyche has been gradually eroded. At one time, incense was burned on temple altars on a daily basis (it is still used today as an important part of some religious services); fragrant herbs and flowers were strewn on the floor of a dwelling. Odors were often associated with illness and disease. An evil smell was so much a part of the plague that it was believed to be one of the earliest symptoms. It had an odor that was foul and distinctive. The breath of plague victims was described by physicians of the time as that of ‘rotten flesh’ or ‘corrupt cadavers’.

Because breathing in the foul stench was thought to be one of the methods of contracting the disease, those who were still healthy carried nosegays and pomanders of highly perfumed flowers and spices. By holding these to the nose they believed that they were warding off infection carried in the venomous air. In the Middle Ages, and even later, pleasant smells were considered to be an important part of good health and immunity to disease. During the 1348 plague, French physicians prescribed breathing in cold aromatics like roses, sandalwood, renuphar, vinegar, rose-water, camphor and chilled apples for summertime protection. And in the winter, hot aromatics like aloe, amber, sweetgum and nutmeg.

Another physician prescribed that “The heart must be eased by external bathing and internally with syrups and other medicines. All such preparations must contain some perfume and some aroma, like the fragrance of the lemon tree, syrup of apples and lemons and the acid of pomegranate”. Another recommended that the house and the body should be kept clean; the rooms of the house should be ventilated, sprinkled with vinegar and filled with scented flowers and plants. It should be “perfumed with good smells. So let vine leaves, sweet rushes, willow and osier, small plants and leaves of the lemon tree and all other green things like flowers and sweet-smelling pommes be strewn throughout and placed in the corners and on the walls of the chambers”.

Unfortunately, the bodily cleanliness did not include the use of water. In fact, washing and bathing was considered a dangerous practice at times, as it opened the pores and allowed the odorous, plague-ridden air to enter the body more easily. The hands and face were cleansed with aromatic lotions and frequent changes of clothing, with abundant use of perfumes, were considered to be indispensable. Physicians recommended that their bodies be washed in tepid vinegar twice a day.

There was also thought to be an odor of sanctity, saints and mystics were considered to emanate sweet odors of violets, roses, cinnamon and cloves. This sweet odor was noted even after death and remains of saints were alleged to have given off sweet floral odors many years after death. Pope Benedict XIV stated “That the human body may by nature not have an overtly unpleasant odor is possible, but that it should actually have a pleasing smell – that is beyond nature. If such an agreeable odor exists, whether there does or does not exist a natural cause capable of producing it, it must be owing to some higher course and thus deemed to be miraculous”. Therefore the pleasant odor of the saint is seen as evidence of sanctity.

Throughout the ages, scents and odors have had a deep and profound effect on the human psyche. Suskind says “For scent was a brother breath. Together with breath it entered human beings who could not defend themselves against it, not if they wanted to live. And scent entered into their very core, went directly to their hearts and decided for good and all between affection and contempt, disgust and lust, love and hate, the who ruled scent ruled the hearts of men.”

Place both thumbs on the heel and slide each thumb from the center of the sole to the edge of the foot.

Alternate the thumbs by using the right and then the left as you work up the foot towards the toes.

Loosening the foot with a back-forth movement

To accomplish this, first place the palms of the hands on either side of the foot with the fingers on the top of the foot. Ensure to keep the hands relaxed.

Gently push the foot forward with your left hand and pull the foot back with your right hand. Continue with this movement, alternating between pushing and pulling the foot back and forth.

Keep the hands relaxed but firm, and in contact with the foot. Repeat about five times until you feel that the foot is relaxed. Then repeat the process on the other foot. This movement helps to release tension.

Toe Rotation

In this movement we have the equivalent effect of rotating the neck, and this accordingly helps to loosen up the neck area. Nervous tension is located in the neck area and correspondingly the two big toes may be very stiff.

Basic Thumb Technique

In reflexology you use your thumbs mainly to work the reflexes on the soles, and sometimes the sides, of the feet. Working with the first joint of your thumb, you “walk” forward along the reflex by successively bending and unbending the joint a little way. It is the inside or medial edge of the thumb that makes contact with the foot, not the tip or the ball (the part that touches the table if you put your hand down flat).

When the thumb is at the correct angle, the joint is not bent too far, allowing greater accuracy and smoothness of technique, as shown. Bending the joint over too far (below) not only strains it but also means that the person you are working on may feel your nail. The fingers of the “working” hand wrap around the top of the foot to provide leverage.

Index Finger Technique

The index finger comes into play when you are working on the top and side of the foot. Once again, you make contact with the inside or medial edge of the finger, bending the first joint slightly to “walk” or creep forward. This time, the thumb gives leverage from the other side of the foot and pushes the metatarsal head forward, to make working the top of the foot easier.

Practice the movement until you can execute it smoothly, keeping your pressure steady. Try “walking” over a painful reflex in one direction with your left index finger, then come back over it with your right.

As with the thumb, when you use your index finger correctly the joint is only slightly bent and the inside edge of the finger works the reflex, as shown . If you flex the finger too steeply and use the fingertip, as below, much of your contact with the skin is lost and you risk digging your nail into the person receiving treatment.

Hooking

Support the foot well in your “holding” hand and place the thumb of your “working” hand on a reflex area. Now hook the thumb in and back up sharply, to one side (in this instance, towards the outside).

This technique is useful for homing in on a particularly small reflex and for working on parts of the foot where the skin is tough, such as the heel. Like a bee inserting a sting, you push your thumb into the reflex, then pull it back. The leverage of the fingers is crucial here, as the technique demands great precision.

Reflex Rotation

Specifically designed to help “work out” a painful reflex, this technique is used on the reflexes to the upper abdominal area of both feet (i.e. between the Waist Line and Diaphragm Line). You should apply it if you come across a particularly tender area, keeping your thumb in position while you rotate the foot around it, as shown.

After a few minutes of reflex rotation, you will find that the pain has diminished considerably. Go gently, being careful to avoid digging your thumbnail in.

Press your “working” thumb gently onto the reflex. Now use the “holding” hand to rotate the upper foot around the thumb, clockwise then anti-clockwise.

The precise reactions which take place when the foot is massaged are not fully understood, although it is accepted that the treatment has a very positive effect on the nervous system and on blood circulation. The improvement to the blood circulation therefore has a beneficial effect on the vital transportation of nutrients to the tissues, and the removal from those tissues of waste products.

The findings support prior research that suggested most living things, including plants, release light.

Since disease and illness appear to affect the strength and pattern of the glow, the discovery might lead to less-invasive ways of diagnosing patients.

Mitsuo Hiramatsu, a scientist at the Central Research Laboratory at Hamamatsu Photonics in Japan, who led the research, told Discovery News that the hands are not the only parts of the body that shine light by releasing photons, or tiny, energized increments of light.

“Not only the hands, but also the forehead and bottoms of our feet emit photons,” Hiramatsu said, and added that in terms of hands “the presence of photons means that our hands are producing light all of the time.”

The light is invisible to the naked eye, so Hiramatsu and his team used a powerful photon counter to “see”it.

The detector found that fingernails release 60 photons, fingers release 40 and the palms are the dimmest of all, with 20 photons measured.

The findings are published in the current Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology.

Hiramatsu is not certain why fingernails light up more than the other parts of the hand, but he said, “It may be because of the optical window property of fingernails,” meaning that the fingernail works somewhat like a prism to scatter light.

To find out what might be creating the light in the first place, he and colleague Kimitsugu Nakamura had test subjects hold plastic bottles full of hot or cold water before their hand photons were measured. The researchers also pumped nitrogen or oxygen gas into the dark box where the individuals placed their hands as they were being analyzed.

Warm temperatures increased the release of photons, as did the introduction of oxygen. Rubbing mineral oil over the hands also heightened light levels.

Based on those results, the scientists theorize the light “is a kind of chemiluminescence,” a luminescence based on chemical reactions, such as those that make fireflies glow. The researchers believe 40 percent of the light results from the chemical reaction that constantly occurs as our hand skin reacts with oxygen.

Since mineral oil, which permeates into the skin, heightens the light, they also now think 60 percent of the glow may result from chemical reactions that take place inside the skin.

Fritz-Albert Popp, a leading world expert on biologically related photons at The International Institute of Biophysics in Germany, agrees with the findings and was not surprised by them.

Popp told Discovery News, “One may find clear correlations to kind and degree (type and severity) of diseases.”

Popp and his team believe the light from the forehead and the hands pulses out with the same basic rhythms, but that these pulses become irregular in unhealthy people. A study he conducted on a muscular sclerosis patient seemed to validate the theory.

Both he and Hiramatsu hope future studies will reveal more about human photon emissions, which could lead to medical diagnosis applications.

What is an Aura?
