Since cold sores are also spread by touching or direct contact with affected area, make sure not to kiss, or share glasses, eating utensils, towels, or washcloths with someone if you have cold sores. Unlike impetigo, cold sores can be painful, especially during the first few days of appearance.

What can I do to help impetigo?

Your treatment plan will vary depending on which type of impetigo your baby has acquired, how severe it is and age. Things that are common in treatments are antibiotics (oral and topical) and specific measures at covering hygiene. I like to make room-sprays for different parts of the house – we gotta do something with all those spray-bottles now, don’t we. Simply (with any oil) dissolve a bit in some oil dispersant (I use a small amount of methylated spirits as it’s cheap!!), top up the bottle with water, and spray, spray, spray. If possible, glass is best, but be aware that essential oils can eat into plastic, so the sprayers sometimes give-up.

Tea tree, eucalyptus and those “camphory” smelling type ones are great at disguising those yukky toilet smells, even for those lucky enough to have a toilet-smoker in the house (erk – I used to, and it does work). You can make small or large amounts, just vary the drops. Copious amounts of different mixes for different occasions, but tea tree is predominantly good for freshening and cleansing. Even just a few drops in some water and shake, shake, shake will achieve the same effect.

These mixes cannot be stored for any length of time, though, as they lose their active constituents when exposed to air, some evaporating more than others. Anyway, on with some remedies!!!

Dab some neat with a cotton-bud to mouth-ulcers, insect bites, fungous growths, warts, zits, cold sores and blah, blah, blah! Basically any type of abrasion/abhesion/thingywatsit that needs healing. My partner felt the tinglings of a cold-sore a while back, dabbed some on, and it didn’t even break-out! Instant relief from “itchy-bites”, too, this is something I can testify first-hand. I have part-time care of two 5 year olds who are very versed in the uses of Tea Tree, ooops, Tea Twee! In fact, the tea tree ointment is now within easy reach of them, with Brette administering first-aid to her father unattended the other night when he scratched his leg. She felt so important!

Apparently she was so attentive to Mark’s needs that she was actually pushing the ointment into the wound! He could only wince and smile, she did such a good job. Infact only a few weeks ago I was chatting with the twins and there was an evil witch on the telly. As their mother is a bitch (oops), I mean not very nice person sometimes, it was a good opportunity to herald the witch-thing in me! We were talking about different things associated with being a “witch”, and as I’ve been described as a green one, we got into magic, broom-riding, and the like, so I likened using tea tree and essential oils and herbs to doing witchy-things – they know how good this stuff is, so witches can’t be bad (hope you get my drift, here, back on track).

Anyway, later on that day, Brette ever so slightly grazed her hand, we wacked on the tea-tree (half the time I think they invent having itchy-bites!!) and later on that day she was absolutely amazed that the graze had disappeared! Magic! Hey, their kids, let their imagination go, huh? Anyway, back to the “bits”!

Tea tree can also be used for nits, few drops on a fine comb, or add some to your shampoo or conditioner, likewise for dogs and cats. Even some drops in some water and shaken up a lot will get the oils dispersed through it. Spray around furniture, animals, etc. Tea tree (usually) does no harm. For those unfortunate enough to get thrush, 5 ml tea tree in 15 ml carrier oil, put about 5 drops onto a tampon and use for a few hours can get rid of it, or a hip(or sitz)-bath (couple of inches of warm water, few drops of oil, sit for a while!!) also helps thrush or cystitis.

Dilute down and spray onto sunburn, rub into scalp neat oil for getting rid of dandruff and controlling oily glands, or mix equal parts of oil with witch-hazel (which is another excellent thing to have on hand, even used neat on haemorrhoids will shrink them instantly – hey, it happens!!) and rub onto oily skin. =20

I think that’s covered it! You can sweeten anything with essential oils. As I mentioned previously, put a bit of metho and a few drops of tea tree or eucalyptus oil in the softener dispenser-thingy on the washing machine when washing towells, sheets, pillows, dog-blankets, to both disinfect and soften them. It’s also a good flea-repellent, and I use nothing else but eucalyptus oil and a bit of washing-up liquid, diluted in water in the garden to get rid of the aphids, caterpillars and bugs.

I also hail the use of lavendar! Some people do not like the smell of tea tree as it can be a bit overpowering, whereas lavendar is very familiar. You can basically use lavendar for the above as well. Eucalyptus shouldn’t be used neat, but a few weeks ago I pulled a muscle on my chest wall and it made things very uncomfortable, especially breathing! I rubbed on some eucalyptus oil in the shower, needless to say my air-ways were extremely clear, but for the rest of the day I had a very cool feeling where the pain inside my chest and side was, much more comfortable than cramping!

Eucalyptus is also excellent for getting off those greasy marks that kids/stickers/work-clothes get/leave, even removes nail-polish, no joke, and you footy-players will just thrive with a tea-tree or eucalyptus rub-down -whoooo-ee! cools the cockles just thinking about it! So next time you have a sprain, cork, boil, rhoid, reach for the tea-tree!

At first, you can tell something is going on because there is a bump on your lip that is sort of tingly. Soon the blisters popup and becomes really painful and annoying. A scab forms over the blisters soon after they appear.

Cold sores are extremely contagious and are caused by the HSV-1 virus. If you catch this virus then it can lay dormant in your body forever and occasionally become active.

Herpes is most commonly spread through physical contact, like kissing. Make sure that you are really clean about yourself and wash your hands thoroughly to avoid spreading the infection to other parts of your body or to somebody else.

When herpes is first caught it does not normally result in a cold sore. This makes it difficult to determine when the virus was caught. It lies dormant in your body just waiting for your immune system to weaken and then the cold sore appears. The virus has found a small crack in your skin and infected the cells. The herpes simplex virus is always looking for new cells to infect.

Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca ericfolia)
This oil is still under study. It is somewhat gentler than Tea Tree and has been found beneficial for bronchitis, asthma, respiratory infection, cynitis, sinus infection.

Tangerine (Citrus nobilis)
Action: Promotes happiness, helps with anxiety, nervousness.
Other Uses: May help dissolve cellulite, improve circulation and help digestive system disorders, dizziness, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, liver problems, parasites, stretch marks (smoothes when blended with lavender), and fluid retention.
Companion Oils: Basil, Bergamot, German Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Orange.

Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)
Action: Analgesic, antitumoral, believed to help stop bleeding, immune stimulant.
Indications: Respiratory infections, stomach conditions, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, aneurysm, bruises, diarrhea, freckles, gout.
Companion Oils: Wintergreen/Birch, Clary Sage, Elemi, Hyssop, Myrtle, Pine, Valerian, Vetiver.

Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus)
Action: A neuromuscular antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, antifermentation, reduces allergies.
Indications: Colitis, hiccups, intestinal spasms, parasites, rheumatic pain, sciatica.
Other Uses: May be beneficial for abdominal discomfort and spasms, arthritis, digestive complaints, genital and urinary tract infection, nausea, premenstrual discomfort, wounds. It may also balance the autonomic nervous system.
Companion Oils: German Chamomile, Clary Sage, Balsam Fir, Juniper, Lavender, Pine, Rosewood, Orange, Tangerine.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Action: Anti-infectious, antibacterial (large spectrum action of gram positive and gram negative bacteria), antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant, cardiotonic, decongestant of the veins, reduces phlebitis, neurotonic, analgesic, protects against radiation.
Indications: Athlete’s foot, fungal infections, bronchitis, respiratory infections, gum disease, rash, sore throat, sunburn, tonsillitis, vaginal thrush
Other Uses: May help acne, burns, candida, cold sores, inflammation, viral infections, ingrown nails, warts and wounds (promotes healing).

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris CT thymol)

Tsuga (Tsuga canadensis)
Action: Analgesic, antirheumatic, astringent, blood cleanser, stimulant.

Valerian (Valerian officinalis)
Action: Sedative and tranquilizing to the central nervous system. Its warming properties can help with hypothermia.
Indications: Because of its effect on the nervous system, it may help with insomnia, nervous indigestion, migraine, restlessness and tension.
Companion Oils: Cedarwood, Lavender, Mandarin, Patchouli, Petigrain, Pine, Rosemary CT Cineol.
Caution: Possible contact sensitization from repeated use

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)
Action: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, calming, grounding, a rubefacient (locally warming), sedative (to the nervous system), stimulant (circulatory, production of red corpuscles).
Indications: Used traditionally for arthritic symptoms.
Other Uses: May help acne, anxiety, arthritis, cuts, depression (including postpartum), insomnia, rheumatism, stress, skin care (oily, aging, irritated).
Companion Oils: Clary Sage, Jasmine, Lavender, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang.

Vitex (Vitex negundo)
Indications: Extensively researched in Europe for its effects on Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological disorders.

Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata)
Action: Antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, hair follicle stimulator, insect repellent.
Indications: Used traditional by Native Americans to help them enter a higher spiritual realm. Used to stimulate the scalp and as an antimicrobial and antiseptic agent. It is an ingredient of cold-remedy salves used to clear the nose and chest.

White Fir (Albies concolor)
Action: Antitumoral, anticancerous, antifungal, antioxidant, and combats respiratory infections.
Caution: Possible skin irritant

Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
(very similar in chemistry to birch)
Action: Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, liver stimulant.
Indications: Arthritis, rheumatism, inflammation, muscular pain, tendonitis, hypertension, cramps.
Other Uses: May be beneficial for cystitis, acne, bladder infection, gout, gallstones, edema, eczema, osteoporosis, skin diseases, ulcers, urinary tract disorders. It contains an active principle similar to cortisone and is beneficial for bone, muscle and joint discomfort.
Companion Oils: Basil, Birch, Cypress, Geranium, Juniper, Lavender, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Peppermint, Roman Chamomile.
Caution: Do not use if epileptic. Possible skin irritant. Skin test for allergies.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
Action: Anti-inflammatory, reduces indigestion, reduces or prevents scarring, promotes healing of wounds.
Indications: Acne, lack of appetite, bladder or kidney weakness, cellulite, respiratory infections, poor digestion, menstrual problems, eczema, gallbladder inflammation, gastritis, gout, poor hair growth, headaches, hemorrhoids, hypertension, liver and menopause problems, neuritis, neuralgia, pelvic and urinary infections, prostatitis, rheumatism, sprains, sunburn, thrombosis, ulcers, vaginitis, varicose veins, wounds.
Other Uses: Yarrow is a powerful decongestant of the prostate and helps to balance hormones.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Action: Antispasmodic, balances blood pressure, regulates heartbeat. It is used in hair preparations to promote thick, shiny, lustrous hair (it is also reported to help control split ends).
Indications: Heart arrhythmias, cardiac problems, high blood pressure, anxiety, impotence, arterial hypertension, depression, mental fatigue, hair loss, labored breathing, insomnia, palpitations, insect bites, tachycardia.
Other Uses: May help balance male-female energies so one can move closer to being in spiritual attunement and allowing greater focus of thoughts, filtering out the ever-present negative frequencies. It may help lower blood pressure, calm rapid breathing, balance equilibrium, ease frustration, balance heart function, help impotence and intestinal problems, shock and skin problems.

Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)

* Clary Sage is used in aromatherapy in preference to Sage (Salvia Officinalis) because Sage can be quite toxic. Clary possesses the positive effects of Sage without the danger. One should avoid the use of alcohol while using Clary Sage because the combination can bring on severe nightmares. Clary produces a heightened state akin to euphoria and relaxation. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus Radiata, etc.)

* Eucalyptus globulus (“blue-gum”) is the most widely used variety; but Eucalyptus radiata is a better choice for aromatherapy because it has all the good properties of Eucalyptus with a sweeter aroma than the “blue-gum” variety. Eucalyptus is well known as a decongestant inhalation for colds. It reduces nasal congestion and inhibits the growth of viruses. In Australia, Eucalyptus leaves are used to bind wounds, and the oil is used in solutions to clean operation cavities and to impregnate gauze as a post-operation dressing. It is also used for burns. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

* Do not use fennel for young children and babies because the melanthine in it can be toxic to them. Fennel must not be used by those who suffer from epilepsy. Lemon (Citrus limonum)

* Lemon stimulates white corpuscles to fight against infection. It is used in minor injuries to stop bleeding, and in minor cuts as a bactericide. Peppermint (Mentha piperata)

* Peppermint is well known for treating digestive upsets, and is used to treat colds and flu. It has a cooling effect, and is used for fevers. It is also used to stimulate the brain and bring on clear thinking. Peppermint should not be used in conjunction with homeopathic remedies, and must be stored away from these, because it can act as an antidote to them.
