Here is some info on a few herbal essential oils that are a very helpful addition to your family’s first aid kit

Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)

* Clary Sage is used in aromatherapy in preference to Sage (Salvia Officinalis) because Sage can be quite toxic. Clary possesses the positive effects of Sage without the danger. One should avoid the use of alcohol while using Clary Sage because the combination can bring on severe nightmares. Clary produces a heightened state akin to euphoria and relaxation. It is used in treating asthma, and during convalescence of the flu. It is used in abdominal massage for digestive problems. (Source: A-Z Aromatherapy by Patricia Davis)
* Most valuable uses: Muscular fatigue, menstrual problems, PMS, fertility, exhaustion, insomnia, menopausal problems, calming, stress, depression, cramps, excessive perspiration.
* Therapeutic properties: Antiseptic, calmative, tonic, emmenagogue, anti-infectious, anti-spasmodic, anti-sudorific, aphrodisiac, nerve tonic, nervine, estrogen-like
* Main chemical components: Linalol, Linalyl Acetate, Germacrene, Ceranyl acetate
* Contraindication: Avoid during pregnancy.

Herpes Virus: HSV1 causes cold sores. It spreads by direct contact with fluids of a cold sore or skin eruption from someone who carries the virus. HSV2 genital herpes, is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a strain of the herpes simplex virus.

This virus enters the body through small cuts in the skin or mucous membranes.

Pregnant women can also pass this virus to their babies during vaginal delivery. Both men and women can become infected. The condition requires careful management. Once an individual is infected by the virus it remains in the body, usually dormant, until some other factor such as stress, sun, infection, or weak immunity, triggers an outbreak.

Experts do not know exactly what causes the virus to lie dormant for long periods and then abruptly awake. Many think that a weakened immune system is the cause. Therefore, it would be wise for you to keep your immune system strong and under control with a well-rounded diet, lots of rest and relaxation, and regular exercise. This program below assists in acute outbreaks and long term care for HSV1 and HSV2.

You should make an effort to have a dental health care plan for family members to follow. Dental health is not an accident, people plan to take good care of their teeth, tongue, mouth and gums and in turn they avoid dental disease and have natural teeth instead of dentures. Dental health care is important for children, teens, adults and seniors.

A good dental health care plan includes proper brushing, flossing, the proper toothbrush, and the best toothpaste for each family member and regular visits to the dentist for examinations and cleanings every six months.

A good dental health plan prevents gum disease, treats cold sores, canker sores and other mouth infections as soon as they start.

A good dental health plan includes regular visits to the dentist, which may include an examination, cleaning, and X-rays.

A good dental health care plan knows that fluoride is important for kids and adults and that those who drink bottled water need to take fluoride supplements.

Cold sores are a patch of tiny blisters that appear on your lips and occasionally in the nose. Another name for them is ‘fever blister‘ and the medical term is recurrent herpes labialis.

At first, you can tell something is going on because there is a bump on your lip that is sort of tingly. Soon the blisters popup and becomes really painful and annoying. A scab forms over the blisters soon after they appear.

Cold sores are extremely contagious and are caused by the HSV-1 virus. If you catch this virus then it can lay dormant in your body forever and occasionally become active.

Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 usually only becomes active showing itself above the waist. This is the type that causes 90% of the cold sores we see today. It is usually picked up as a child from either a parent or brother/sister. Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 affects the tissues below the waistline causing genital herpes. Strangely enough, it is also responsible for the remaining 10% of cold sores that appear around the mouth and nose.

Cold sores and fever blisters are often used interchangeably. This means that these two terms refer to only one condition. This is the ulceration or sores in the lip and the skin surrounding the lip caused by infection called herpes simplex or oral herpes. Because this may be painful, often the same medication for migraine is what you use to help manage the pain caused by cold sores or fever blisters.

You however do not interchange fever blisters with canker sores. This is because canker sores are fluid-filled blisters that happen inside the mouth, while cold sores or fever blisters are fluid-filled blisters; most commonly painful that happens in the lip and the skin surrounding the lip.

Cold sore or fever blisters may be painful and thus understanding its causes, symptoms and how to treat them may be useful for those people who are at risk of this uncomfortable soreness.

Although the initial symptoms of herpes zoster include a tingling, itching and burning pain or extreme sensitivity that is usually limited to one side of the body along with a light fever and malaise, these symptoms of herpes can very often be linked to other disease conditions as well.

Symptoms of herpes zoster therefore, need a more critical approach. Clinical presentations of hyperesthesia, paresthesia, etc. during the predronal stage (which is basically the early stage of the disease) of herpes zoster are often misdiagnosed as cardiac problems, pleurisy, herniated nucleus pulpossus, etc. And this makes the issue complex.

The early symptoms of herpes zoster in the human body include a burning pain (also referred to as the St. Antony’s Fire), itching, extreme sensitivity limited to one side of the body that lasts for about three days. After this the initial zoster rash appears on the skin. These are invariably accompanied by fever and a relentless headache that can turn people roving mad.

Before going into the treatment options, here are some tips for managing the symptoms of a genital herpes infection:

* Urination can sometimes be painful, so drink plenty of liquids (preferably water) and it may be less painful to urinate in the bath.

* Apply an ice pack or bath in cool water.

* Take a mild pain reliever if needed.

* Keep the infected area clean and dry – lightly pat the area dry or even use a hairdryer.

* Wash bath towels and underwear frequently and wear loose clothing during outbreaks.

* Improve your immune system with a healthy lifestyle including a good diet with plenty of rest and try to lower the stress levels.  This can help to reduce the outbreaks.

Several decades ago, herpes treatment options for herpes included the direct application of deoxyglucose or the actual removal of infected areas by surgery. It was soon found that the former option was ineffective while the latter course often resulted in the spread of the herpes along the scar which was left after the surgery. This is not surprising considering how infectious the herpes virus is.

Just ponder a while and answer one question – what do you do when you have a common cold, a sore throat or flu and cannot afford to miss your office. Nine out of ten people will probably take an antibiotic or a pain killer and depend upon the drug to take its affect by the time they reach office.

This attitude of opting for the quick and easy route and falling back on the antibiotic alternative every time one needs to treat colds and flu has been instrumental in making antibiotics ineffective in many cases. The use of antibiotics without paying heed to their long term affects leads to a situation where bacteria use the drug for their own metabolism. The antibiotic, instead of killing, starts helping in the growth of the bacterium because it has developed resistance to it.
