The anxiety or depression in people, who have been diagnosed with cancer, stems from the fears and uncertainties that they experience. Contrary to the expectations, patients especially in advanced stage of cancer experience anxiety or depression not because of fear of death, but from the fear of being left alone, fear of uncontrolled pain and dependency on others.

However, many of these causes can be alleviated with treatment to provide anxiety relief. The treatment for providing relief from anxiety should start by educating the patient with the information on cancer and the treatment it requires. This will help him or her completely understand the situation and the treatment options. Most cancer patients go through a phase of extreme anger and helplessness that stems from a feeling that life has been unfair to them. The only way of overcoming this feeling is to channel the anger towards positive action like seeking adequate and appropriate help.

Another major cause of depression or anxiety in cancer patients is the fear of being left alone. This is activated if the family shows signs of being scared of the condition. A cancer support group can be of great help by providing avenues of talking about the condition to other people who understand the situation better and can provide valuable inputs on how to manage life, going forward.

These support groups can also help the family in understanding that the condition is nothing to be scared of so that they can mete out humane treatment to the patient. Even those lucky few who are diagnosed in the early stages of cancer and have been successfully treated may suffer from anxiety or depression due to thoughts of a relapse that can hound them. Though some people are able to grow out of the shadow of this worry, there are some who may be troubled by it.

The anxiety associated with this increases when another member of the family falls sick or during follow-up visits to the doctor. Such people need to develop a positive mental attitude, find ways and means to relax and most importantly talk about your feelings with others. In cases where these approaches do not work, medications for anxiety relief may be used in combination with these techniques.

Natural treatments for anxiety are also gaining prominence since they do not have side effects and are not habit forming.

Survival rates will depend upon the individual’s overall health, age, the stage of the cancer and the grade of the tumor. At some point survival rates will also depend upon the skills of the oncologists, the surgeon and the ability of the patient to locate effective treatment options. Fortunately, there are survivors with all types of cancers, from all stages and all tumor grade. Individuals are able to beat their odds of any particular cancer based upon the previous factors as well is their willingness to comply with treatment options or investigate treatment options on their own.

Standard statistical information indicates that early-stage throat cancer has a 90% cure rate, cancer that has spread to surrounding tissue has a 50 to 60% cure rate and that which has metastasized facing incurable. Oral cancer is a catchall term for a variety of head and neck cancers that are usually squamous cell in type. Squamous cell tumors have the ability to develop rapidly. Oral cancers also includes cancers of the salivary glands, thyroid glands and parathyroid glands.

Individuals who are willing to become involved in their treatment protocols as well and do their own investigative work, have a higher rate of survival. Treatment for any skin cancer will include nutrition, exercise and emotional support. Finding a good throat cancer support group will help to reduce anxiety and fear as well as improve emotional support-all of which are extremely important in the fight against cancer cells.

The individuals who suffer from throat cancer should proactively find the doctor and hospital who have the best track record of treating throat and oral cancer. Become familiar with the side effects of the medications and treatment protocols, home remedies that may improve your survival rate, clinical trials which may be available, financial and insurance information that will help determine the type of treatments available and any alternative treatments that may help increase survival rates.

I can’t imagine watching one of my four children dying. Even worse, I can’t imagine watching them suffer before they passed away.

I can’t fathom watching one of my sons or daughters lying in a bed…unable to move…spitting up blood and screaming in pain. I don’t think any parent can .

But it happens….every day. Maybe to your neighbor or the girl you stood behind in the checkout line this morning. Perhaps that guy you’re driving behind who can’t seem to stay at one speed is grieving the loss of his son. Cancer kills people…and it doesn’t care who or how old they are.
