A new study from the National Institute of Mental Health found that the United States has the highest lifetime rate of bipolar disorder at 4.4% (versus a worldwide diagnosis estimate of about 2.4%). However, researchers point out that the higher prevalence may be closely tied to cultural differences and varying levels of acceptance regarding psychiatric care and treatment. Regardless of where the study participants resided, the condition showed fairly constant similarities and symptoms, including varying cycles of depression and manic, elated mood.
