Epilepsy or seizure activity is usually defined as a sudden change in behavior that is a result of an alteration in electrical functioning in the brain. Some signs and symptoms of epileptic behavior are commonly known but there are also changes in behavior and emotion which will precede an epileptic seizure as well as those that happen after seizure activity has ended.
Explanation of Seizure Activity
Seizure activity actually has a beginning, a middle and an end. When sufferers are aware that a seizure is soon to follow this is often referred to as a warning or an aura. In some instances individuals are not aware of the beginning of their seizure and therefore have no warning signs at all. The middle of a seizure can take several different forms. These differences will be a result of the area of the brain which is affected by the electrical activity.
At the end of a seizure an individual will be transitioning from seizure activity back to a normal state. The medical term for this is postictal period. This is the time that signifies the recovery. For the brain and may last from seconds to hours depending upon what parts of the brain were affected and whether or not the individual has been using anti-seizure medication.
Symptoms of Epilepsy or Seizure
While it may be next to impossible to give a complete list of early, middle and late symptoms of epilepsy or seizure activity there are some symptoms of epilepsy which are more common than others. Early seizure symptoms of epilepsy, or warning signs, that are common include: smells, sounds, tastes, strange feelings in the stomach or tingling feelings in the extremities, feelings of fear or panic, dizziness, sudden headache or lightheadedness, nausea or numbness.
During a seizure, symptoms of epilepsy will vary depending upon the area of the brain which is affected. Some of the more common symptoms of epilepsy will fall into either sensory, emotional or physical factors. Sensory symptoms of epilepsy include blacking out, confusion, loss of consciousness, smell, out of body experience or visual loss and blurring. Some individuals will report feelings of fear and panic during a seizure activity as opposed to just during a warning or aura.
Physical Symptoms of Epilepsy or Seizure
Physical symptoms of epilepsy or a seizure include chewing movements, convulsions of the legs and arms, difficulty talking, eyes rolling up, falling down, foot stomping or handwaving, inability to move, loss of bladder control, lipsmacking and shaking, stiffening of extremities or core muscles, continued swallowing, sweating, tongue biting, tremors, breathing difficulty and racing heart.
During the postictal state individuals will experience memory loss and writing difficulty as well as confusion, fear, frustration and shame or embarrassment. They may also suffer from bruising which occurred during the seizure, difficulty talking, sleepiness, headache, nausea, pain, thirst and weakness.
It’s important to know and understand the symptoms of epilepsy which occurred during a seizure so that these symptoms of epilepsy may be reported to your health care practitioner. By having a better understanding of the actual symptoms of epilepsy the physician is able to more accurately pinpoint the area of the brain which is affected by the abnormal electrical activity. This increased understanding will also improve the goal of treatment which is to control seizures.
