Causes, Symptoms and Natural Treatments for Toenail FungusToenail fungus is an aggravating problem that is also known as onychomycosis of the nail plate or tinea of the nails.

Even though it is called toenail fungus, it can also occur in the fingernails. Toenails are more commonly affected, though.

Causes of Toenail Fungus

A fungus lives and breeds in warm, dark and moist areas. Shoes and socks are great places for it to survive in and is the reason why it commonly occurs on the little and big toes.

Public showers, swimming pools, gyms, spas and locker rooms are breeding grounds for fungus because the conditions are just right.

Shoes that fit too tight or pantyhose can cause people to be more susceptible to it, as well as candida or thrush.

Fungal infections can be passed from person to person and spread around the victim’s own body.

Toenail Fungus Symptoms

Symptoms that are experienced can be very bad or relatively mild depending on many factors. The nail that is affected might be brown or yellow and swollen. Oftentimes the nail even begins to crumble away or become very thick.

You might also notice streaking or spots alongside the edges of it. It is very common for debris to collect underneath the affected nail, as well. As you might expect, the nails can look terribly gruesome and sometimes even cause a lot of pain.

Preventing Toenail Fungus

We become more vulnerable to this type of infection when certain conditions are not met. It is important to make sure your foot hygiene is good and they are dried thoroughly after a shower or exercise.

Trauma to a nail can make it more susceptible to an infection. If the skin’s pH level is off it also makes us more vulnerable to toenail fungus infection.

Make sure that you keep your immune system strong and healthy by making good lifestyle choices. If you suffer from other medical conditions like diabetes or Candida then you are more likely to get this type of infection.

Treating Toenail Fungus

Getting rid of this problem can be terribly difficult because it tends to recur. There are plenty of products available over the counter, but you need to be careful when shopping for these.

Some of them are really hard on the body and can kill off the good bacteria that keeps everything in balance. Killing the good bacteria only leaves us more vulnerable to problems in the future.

The doctor is likely to prescribe an anti-fungal medicine to kill off the infection. This works great but also kills off the good bacteria and can worsen things for you in the future.

Herbs like lemon grass are great for fighting off fungus and bacteria. Tea Tree Oil and Lavender are also great at fighting off fungus and will help your body to heal itself. They are also very soothing to the affected areas.
