Many of us walk around not knowing we have bad breath or that we are at risk for bad breath. If we knew we might change some of the things we are doing in order to avoid the embarrassment of being told we have bad breath. Would you like to know what things might put you at risk for having bad breath?

Bad breath can occur when you eat certain foods such as foods that are spicy or foods that contain garlic or onions. Bad breath can also happen when your dental hygiene is poor either because you do not take the time to brush after meals or you simply do not like to brush. Some people never floss and have bad breath do to all the food particles that accumulate in between teeth that might have been dislodged by flossing.

Learning how to brush your teeth, floss and clean your tongue properly can help you to prevent bad breath.

Lifestyles can also contribute to bad breath. Two things that people do that can cause bad breath are drinking alcohol and smoking or chewing tobacco products. When these habits cause you to have bad breath the friends you thought you were making because of being “cool” may shun you because you have bad breath. It is better to avoid drinking and smoking if it prevents you from having bad breath.

You may be at risk for bad breath if you have post-nasal drip. Post-nasal drip can happen when you have allergies, a cold or the flu. Postnasal drip can deposit on the back of the tongue on its way down the throat from your nasal passage. These deposits of post-nasal drip can attract odors causing bad breath. You can minimize your risk for bad breath by taking care of your post-nasal drip as soon as you notice it. Nasal sprays and antihistamines can be prescribed by your doctor or purchased over-the-counter (OTC). Make sure you read all instruction and follow them carefully when using these products.

Diseases and conditions can contribute to bad breath so making sure that you receive good medical care and that you follow your treatment plan will keep these conditions and diseases in control and perhaps decrease your risk for bad breath that can be associated with these diseases and conditions.

Fruity breath can occur if you put yourself on a strict diet. The fruity breath comes from the breakdown of chemicals during a fast called ketoacidosis. It is not healthy to fast for too long. Eating a healthy diet on a regular basis can help you to avoid bad breath.

Most bad breath can be eliminated by practicing good dental habits such as brushing after meals, flossing at least once a day, brushing or scraping your tongue daily, and keeping regular appointments with your dentist so that you can catch dental disease early.

Most bad breath disappears when the cause is eliminated such as when the garlic or onions we ate clears our body or when the cold we caught runs its course and the post-nasal drip goes away. If you notice persistent bad breath it is important to see your dentist or doctor for a diagnosis.
