Parkinson’s Disease is a neurological degenerative disease that affects people in a variety of ways. Using a generic Parkinson’s disease case presentation will be able to help delineate all of the different symptoms that can occur over the life time of the patient. Although all of these symptoms may not be present in all patients it gives an overall view of the disease.
Jay is a healthy 35 year old computer geek who works in informational services for a large corporation. Jay notices that his right hand has developed a tremor when he is resting.
At first it is occasional and only when he is exhausted from his other physical pursuits roller blading, gardening and biking. However, the tremor continues to get worse over several months.
Jay’s primary care physician is troubled by the tremor and sends Jay to a neurologist who performs several tests to rule out different neurological involvement. Jay is considered very young for the development of Parkinson’s disease but after 3 weeks of testing the consensus is that Jay has early onset Parkinson’s disease.
Jay is started on a dopamine medication which helps to alleviate all of his symptoms for a short time. He continues to receive follow up with his neurologist who also sends him for evaluation to a clinic specifically for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Jay’s case is significant because of the early onset of the disease. Physicians are working to decrease the decline in his physical abilities to give him the longest possible time of good function.
After a few short years, Jay is forced to take disability from work because the long hours and stress have decreased his function. Pam, his wife, goes back to work full time as a teacher to receive benefits for the family. Jay continues to work around the house and do all of the home improvements despite recommendations from his neurologist and wife that he forgo work on the roof.
After working with a physical therapist for several months Jay has improved his balance and strives to retain his muscular strength in his lower extremities. Always a thin person, his current medications have eliminated his appetite and his weight falls precariously.
With an increased exercise program and change in medications Jay’s decline in physical function has halted. He participates in long distance bike rides across his home state, plays with his children and remains functional at home.
Currently, Jay has undergone evaluation and treatment with a psychologist for depression related to the decrease in his physical function and diagnosis of this neurological degenerative disease. He and his wife continue to work together as a team to provide the best environment for their children and have made provisions for the future.
Jay and his wife, with help of their lawyer, developed a trust to protect as much of their assets as possible to help the family after Jay becomes incapacitated or dies. The family works together to enjoy the times they have together knowing that as Jay’s physical function declines with age (currently 46), his ability to interact with the children and perform light duties around the house will also decline.
Jay now does some computer consulting on the side to augment the family income. Using his knowledge of computers and taking appropriate breaks to keep his body from freezing, he remains functional and able to help provide for the family
