ADHD, a condition long associated with children, is also known to affect adults. Experts believe that this condition does not have an onset in adulthood. According to the Harvard Health Letter, it is estimated that about eighty percent of children who are suffering from ADHD will continue to be afflicted with this condition even as adults.

The symptoms of ADHD in adults are similar to those exhibited in children. Impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattentiveness are the three main characteristics of ADHD that are exhibited in adults as well. However, in adults, these characteristics are manifested in a different form that can range from problem with time management, planning for future, and persistence to achieve a goal. These adults get bored with repetitive tasks and generally procrastinate a lot. Experts believe that with increase in maturity levels that comes with age, the hyperactive behavior reduces.

The diagnosis of ADHD in adults is very difficult. There is no single test that can conclusively prove that an adult is suffering from ADHD. It is important that an expert clinician conduct the diagnosis. Initially, a battery of physical and neuropsychological tests is performed to eliminate the presence of other conditions. Then the clinician uses a defined questionnaire to check the presence of certain symptoms, their severity and persistence. It is important that apart from the person undergoing diagnosis, this feedback should be taken from family members as well since they would have observed the behavior of the person in different settings and through the growing years. Getting the feedback from family members is also important since this condition has an onset in the childhood and a person may not be able to recall all the childhood instances to the complete detail. To be diagnosed with ADHD, an adult should have symptoms that began in the childhood; he should exhibit current symptoms of ADHD and should exhibit persistent symptoms that impact one or more areas of life.

There are different types of ADHD treatments that are prescribed depending on the condition of the person. Generally, a combination of treatments has been shown to provide maximum benefit. Generally there are four approaches that are used to treat ADHD. The first approach is to educate the person about the condition so that he can deal with it in an informed manner. The second is the use of medication, especially stimulants and antidepressants. However, given the side effects of chemical prescriptions, natural medicines for ADHD are becoming popular. Another approach is to use psychotherapy. There are other treatments also like enrolling in a support group, vocational training etc. Natural Remedies for ADHD treatment is also gaining ground.

It is true that ADHD can be a burden. However, for people diagnosed with this condition, there is a silver lining. Adults with ADHD are often energetic, creative and willing to take risks. And if channeled properly, especially after the individual acquires a degree of self-knowledge and learns to channel his energy and creativity, it can help the person in achieving great success in life.
