Workplace stress, although a recent phenomenon, has assumed alarming proportions. Stress at workplace can impact the overall performance of the business and can also lead to emotional, financial or security concerns in individual employees.

While evaluating stress at the workplace it should be noted that workplace stress is actually a stimulating factor ― “no one reaches peak performance without being stressed, whether an athlete, an office worker or a manager.” A certain amount of stress is required to induce responses that actually help us in moving forward in life through creativity solutions and increased productivity.

Let us look closely at what actually transpires:

* We face a situation or an event occurs that causes stress.
* We react with increased tension.
* We return to our normal relaxed state.

While stress is an essential characteristic of some jobs due to the inherent nature of the activity involved, workplace stress is otherwise a result of high demands of performance, inability to control these demands, poor organizational and communication skills, job insecurity and an unfriendly environment.

Managing stress at workplace comes easy if you are able to match your capabilities with the demands placed on you. These demands may be physical or emotional. If you cannot possibly meet them, seek help from colleagues. While performance is of vital importance, remember that you as a human being have a right to pleasure and relaxation as well.

Sometimes we take on responsibilities that are far too difficult for us to control or manage. It is wise to realize your limits in terms of capabilities, effort and time and decide to take on as much as you think you can handle easily. If too much emotional energy is demanded from you, become less approachable. Appearing less sympathetic is better than getting completely stressed.

We tend to get habituated to a particular lifestyle. But the reality is that we do need to change with the times. Being adaptable and accepting change with grace and enthusiasm is required if we have to avoid stress and survive in a highly competitive scenario.

It is also possible that your own stubbornness and idiosyncrasies are causing you stress. In such situations, take stock of them and change those habits. Understand your limitations and accept them.

Workplace stress is not always related to work only. Life situations and your approach to them are equally responsible. Identify your stressors and evaluate whether it is the job, workload, environment, delivery pressures or your own habits that are burning you out.

A good support system is one of the best ways to relieve stress. While at home, spend some quality time with your family. Take care of yourself, eat properly. Ensure that you have enough nutrients to provide sufficient energy for optimal performance.

Always remember that some amount of stress is natural and instrumental in enhancing your performance. The moot point is not to let stress manage you but to make it work for you and return back to your normal relaxed state. It is when you let stress overpower you that a reversal to your normal relaxed state is not achieved. When this is not achieved, prolonged stress affects your overall health and causes further stress.
