Is There Such A Thing As A Menopause Diet? There are many phases of a woman’s life, the one perhaps that most women dread if that which is known as “menopause“. Nutrition has throughout our life played an important role in keeping us healthy from the foods that helped us to build strong bones and teeth when we were young to the good nutrition we made sure we had while pregnant with our offspring. Now that we are in our menopause can there be such a thing as a nutritional need that will help us to be healthier during these years?

The answer is yes, if you experience hot flashes during menopause than there are nutritional facts that may help you.

Hot flashes are a common symptom of menopause. Not all women experience them, but for those that do it can be very uncomfortable. Women have been experimenting with various diets in their search for the right foods to eat while going through menopause.

Women have discovered that certain foods make the hot flash experience worse such as consuming spicy foods, or drinking tea, coffee, alcohol, or drinks that contain caffeine. Women also found that smoking could increase hot flashes.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have supported using black cohosh for up to six months duration for the treatment of hot flashes. Black cohosh is an herb that is used in Europe to treat hot flashes. There are currently studies being conducted to determine if there are any long-term consequences for using black cohosh longer than 6 months.

Many women swear by using estrogen for the treatment of hot flashes. The natural estrogen is the one found in soy. Soy contains phytoestrogens, which is an estrogen-like substance. Japanese women eat soy regularly and on a whole do not suffer from hot flashes. The North American Menopause Society in the year 2000 recommended that eating 1 to 2 servings of soy products daily may help to relieve menopausal symptoms.

Other women have turned to supplement to treat their hot flashes. Vitamin E (400 – 800 IU), Dong Quai, Wild Yam and Evening primrose oil have all been used by women in search of relief from hot flashes. It is always wise to seek the counsel of a physician when seeking to treat yourself with supplements.
