Getting inside the mind of the burglar is the best form of crime prevention.
If you keep these aspects in mind when planning home security, you will be able to make the right choices, identify the weak points and therefore secure and strengthen them.
The more you know about the way in which intruders and assailants think, the better your home burglary prevention methods shall be.
What Does a Burglar Want and How Can You Prevent it?
Some of the things that burglars want to achieve when breaking into a house are discussed below.
Burglar thought # 1 – “Lets choose an empty house. We can take out time breaking in and choosing what we need to take.”
Solution – Empty houses are therefore at a higher risk of home invasion than those that are occupied. Almost all burglars ring the bell to make that no one is home before breaking in. You must come to the door and not open it.
State that you are unwell and that they should come another time. In all probability, you will avert an impending home invasion just by doing so.
Burglar thought # 2 – “It’s better not to be seen by anyone, lest we be identified later.”
Solution – Burglars choose the front door or the back door in order to avoid the prying eyes of neighbors. This is why you should use door reinforcement products like door jambs and door shields.
Burglar thought # 3 – “If someone is inside the house, they should not be able to call for help.”
Solution – In order to ensure that you cannot reach out to anyone, telephone lines are almost always cut. But they will not spend too much time looking for the telephone block.
So make sure that you camouflage it with a bush or ask the telephone company to install it inside the garage. In case telephone lines do get cut, you always have the option of your cell phone.
Burglar thought # 4 – “We need to identify the weakest links so that we can make a quick entry and getaway.”
Solution – No one likes extra work and neither do burglars. They are therefore likely to try and identify the weakest points that give them easy access.
Use a sliding door deadlock for sliding doors since they are far weaker than regular doors.
Burglars are also likely to go to your master bedroom first since they expect you to keep your money and jewelry there.
Make sure that you use a door security bar on the master bedroom door.
