There are two different types of sleep apnea obstructive sleep apnea, which is a condition in which the throat muscles relax during sleep and affect the way you get air in causing a blockage. Nasal polyps, a deviated septum, or an upper airway abnormality may cause the blockage. Central sleep apnea is a condition in which the brain does not properly control the muscles that are involved in the breathing process.
A sleep disorder is diagnosed by symptom with or without a doctor’s help. A medical doctor who will use the family history, medical history, a physical exam, your symptoms, and tests to determine if you have a sleep disorder and what it is can also diagnose it.
Some symptoms that might indicate that you have a sleep disorder are excessive daytime sleepiness, cluster headaches, and pain in the jaw area or ear from tooth grinding and leg or arm movement during sleep.
A sleep study is often a tool used to diagnose a sleep disorder. A sleep study is done at a sleep center. The individual stays in a private room overnight. Several wires are attached to the scalp, arms, legs, head, back and chest and are attached to monitors. A sensor is placed on the finger. Equipment reads the data gathered from the sensor and monitor and the doctor will interpret the readings to help make the diagnosis. Brain waves, limb movement, breathing and heart rate are all monitored during the sleep study.
Sleep apnea may be affected by obesity, medications that are taken such as tranquillizers, and CNS depressants such as alcohol, your sleeping position, and certain medical conditions like arthritis, heart disease, asthma and other breathing disorders.
Sleep disorders may be treatable with medications, changes in the sleep environment; lifestyle changes, psychiatric counseling to relieve anxiety, stress and depression, and CPAP to aid in sleep apnea.
People of all ages experience sleep disorders including children, adults, teens and the elderly.
