How to Calm Down a Colicky Baby and the ParentsNew parents have a lot of challenges to face. It’s hard enough for them when baby doesn’t sleep through the night, but what if he is exhibiting signs of colic? Before you can deal with your baby, someone may have to calm you down.

As a parent, the word “overreacting” isn’t in your vocabulary. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The instincts you develop can keep your baby safe from harm.

When it comes to colic, the months of constant crying can have your internal mommy alarms going off at every turn. While a colicky baby is cause for concern there is no need to worry. Call your pediatrician, but in the meantime, calmly gain control of your emotions.

Take a deep breath. Your baby is not in any danger. Colic is often caused by an immature digestive system that is quite sensitive in baby’s early months of life. Their systems are still new to the outside world.

Taking turns watching baby may be a good thing for you with a colicky baby. When you need a break, ask your spouse or significant other to let you get a few hours of sleep while they take over for you. Just a few hours to yourself can help you deal with the symptoms of colic better.

What can you do for your baby at this time? For breastfeeding moms, your child’s pediatrician may ask you about your diet. Sometimes, spicy foods or fiber-filled veggies can overpower a baby’s delicate digestive system.

Monitoring the types of foods and drinks you have can help to reduce the incidence of colic. Stay away from eating too much broccoli and cauliflower. Drinking coffee can over-stimulate baby and make them fussy and irritable.

Babies can present with a distended, hard belly because of the build-up of gas and bloating that can accompany colic. Herbal tea can help as a home remedy for relieving abdominal pain, flatulence and indigestion. Choose teas that contain peppermint, lemon balm and chamomile. Breastfeeding moms can drink herbal teas to pass on the benefits to their babies.

Many parents have heard about a product called gripe water. It is touted as a remedy for colic in babies. Customers stand by their effectiveness in reducing pain, pressure and gas in babies.

One word of caution: Before using any home or homeopathic remedies for colic on your child, consult your physician. They can tell you what products are safe and effective and able to be ingested by your child.

Another alternative is infant massage. For babies who have a hard time falling asleep, a massage from forehead to heels can relax them. Tender circular movements may work any trapped gas or discomfort throughout their digestive system where it can exit the body.

Colic can be alarming for parents, but don’t panic. Your baby will be fine. When you are calm, you can implement real solutions to solve baby’s condition.
