Vitamins are safe and an effective way to help ensure optimal health, right?

Actually, recent studies have shown that vitamins have very little positive impact on health.

They don’t protect against diseases. They aren’t absorbed well by the body and they can be dangerous.

Let’s take a look at the hidden dangers of vitamins and talk a bit about how you can improve your nutrition with food.

Supplements Aren’t Heavily Regulated by the FDA

While the FDA, Food and Drug Administration, gets a bad rap, they are often quite helpful in protecting the public. Unfortunately, the vitamin and supplement industry isn’t heavily regulated.

This means that you don’t always know what you’re buying. It’s not uncommon for supplements to have mystery ingredients.

They’re not put through rigorous studies so we also don’t know much about potential side effects and interactions. For example, did you know that vitamin D can interfere with blood pressure medication?

Labeling is inconsistent and often absent from vitamins and supplements. The only ingredient that has labeling regulations is iron because iron poisoning can be fatal for children.

Overdosing Is Easy and Common

It’s quite easy to take too much of a vitamin and it can have dangerous and even deadly consequences. This is particularly important when talking about fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K.

For example, too much vitamin A can cause liver failure or even death. Taking too much vitamin D, which can happen if you take a supplement and drink enriched milk, can cause bone pain, vomiting, diarrhea and muscle problems. Too much calcium can cause kidney stones.

Hard to Swallow

Many vitamins pose choking hazards for adults and children. It’s one of the reasons that more chewable vitamins for adults are reaching the market.

Vitamins can become lodged in the throat and cause tissue damage. And it’s not uncommon for vitamins to cause damage to the esophagus on the way down.

Unnatural Ingredients

Many vitamins contain 100% lab created materials. It’s not natural and the ingredients don’t do your body any favors.

The only way to make sure you’re getting natural ingredients is to make sure that you’re buying vitamins that are approved by the U.S. Pharmacopeia and are labeled with the “USP Verified” mark.

Vitamins can be good for certain groups of people. If you have a chronic condition, digestion and absorption issues, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding then vitamins can help improve and sustain health.

For the general public, it’s best to get complete nutrition through food. It’s also safer.

The Importance of Omega 3s for Your Health

Scientists have established the effectiveness of Omega 3 in a number of health areas, including your Heart, Brain, Joints, Skin, Immune system, Vision, and Digestion.

Like any product on the market today there are ‘good fish oils’ and there are ‘bad fish oils’! With a bad one you may be unwittingly introducing substances into your body that you DO NOT want… such as Mercury and PCB’s for example. We impose tougher standards on the purity of our fish oil than any other known manufacturer.
