Heart Disease – A Term For Many Diseases Affecting the Heart
There are many diseases of the heart including coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular disease, ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, hypertensive heart disease, inflammatory heart disease, and also valvular heart disease.
Coronary heart disease is caused by the accumulation of plaque in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Chest pain and heart attack are the two symptoms of coronary heart disease. Each year 451,000 Americans and 101,000 UK citizens die of coronary heart disease.
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle in fact it is when the heart muscle deteriorates and is not able to function anymore. People with cardiomyopathy suffer arrhythmia or they can also experience sudden cardiac death when the heart muscle suddenly stops beating.
There are many different kinds of cardiomyopathies including the most common form called ischemia. Cardiovascular disease affects the heart and or the blood vessels, especially the veins and the arteries that lead to and come from the heart. Women usually suffer from diseases of the heart vessels where men usually suffer from diseases of the heart muscle.
Ischaemic heart disease is when there is a diminished supply of blood to the organs.
Heart failure also called congestive heart failure (CHF) or congestive cardiac failure (CCF) is when there is a failure in structure or function of the ability of the heart to fill with or to pump enough blood throughout the body in order for the body to function. Cor pulmonale is a failure on the right side of the heart.
Hypertensive heart disease is caused by high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause left ventricular hypertrophy, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, hypertensive cardiomyopathy, and also cardiac arrhythmias.
Inflammatory heart disease is when there is an inflammation of the heart muscle or the tissure surrounding it such as endocarditis which is an inflammation of the inner layer of the heart, inflammatory cardiomegaly, myocarditis which is inflammation of the muscular part of the heart.
Valvular heart disease is any disease that involves one or more of the valves of the heart.
