I purchased this book after seeing the author on television. He was being interviewed, and I decided a long time ago to support professionals who stand by their conviction regarding the etiology of autism, i.e., the belief that autism is caused by or exacerbated by some environmental trigger or combination of triggers. Dr. Bock has done his own research, he’s concluded that environmental insults likely have something to do with causing autism, and he’s providing hope for parents and their children challenged by autism. He should be supported for this alone. Indeed, these are three actions which, as the parent of two daughters with autism, I have yet to witness from the doctors who interact with my girls.

I find Bock’s book to be both smarmy and without information that hasn’t already been written many times over. One example of his smarmy elements is his treatment on parents’ love for their children. From this treatment, a reader might conclude that children who don’t recover from autism are not loved or loved as much as they need to be by their parents–somewhere Bettelheim is smiling. If the reader is charitable, she would not make this inference. Even with charity, though, it takes a dedicated reader to overlook Bock’s excessive reference to parental love and read the book to its end. The trouble with reading the book to its end is that the reader will not find any thing new in Bock’s book that hasn’t already been written. Thus, I give his book a charitable three star rating, but I only recommend his book to those who are new to autism’s biochemical community AND who are able to overlook the smarmy elements of this book that may also be found to be quite offensive.

I was a bit “put-off” by the case study stories because I perceived them as him bragging or boasting. However, some of them provided a little hope and once you get to the good stuff, it is worth putting up with the rest of it. This book provides pertinent information that you can use to take charge of your child’s health and medical care.

This book is a must have for anyone who cares for children medically. It might also be valuable for the more educated and involved parents of the world. Great statistics and evidence-based practice tips

I originally saw this author on the Montel Williams show & was very impressed with him. I bought this book for my sister who works with autistic children.
