The gallbladder is a little organ but it has a crucial job to do. It stores bile for the liver and releases that bile to help break down fats in the food that we consume. When gallstones get in the way, then it can not execute its job and troubles result. If you believe you might have a gallbladder stone, here are a few possible treatment choices.

Gallstones are formed in the gallbladder from a mixture of cholesterol deposits and other substances observed in the bile. Stones are generally little things that never cause any trouble in the digestive system. But, occasionally, the stones can become large. This in and of itself isn’t a problem until they block off one of the ducts leading from the gallbladder.

You have 2 ducts: the cystic duct and the common bile duct. The cystic duct drains bile from the gallbladder. The common bile duct inhibits bile from not merely the gallbladder but likewise the liver. This bile breaks down fats in the intestines too. Without it, fats are not properly digested.

Most folks have stones in the gallbladder that block the cystic duct. The gallbladder may become inflamed and anguish ensues. This anguish might be in the upper abdomen close to the site of the organ. Often it’s felt in the back and between the shoulder blades.

On rare occasions folks have stones that travel to the common bile duct. This is a more grievous problem that may bear upon the pancreas which secretes insulin. Stones in the common bile duct need to be removed.

Treatment Options

While you will not feel like dancing after a bout of gallbladder anguish, some folks suffer one episode and nothing else. The stone might move away from the opening to the duct and lead to no additional issues. In this case, your physician might watch your symptoms to see if they happen over again.

Repeated gallbladder stone attacks may lead to inflammation in the little organ. This leads to scar tissue and a swollen organ. The alternative that your physician might recommend is surgery.

Surgery for gallbladder stone removal involves removing the entire organ. Today it can be performed laparoscopically through 4 small surgical incisions using a scope and a camera for visualization. A cholangiogram (fluoroscopic picture of the ducts utilizing dye) is taken to make certain that the stones aren’t in the cystic duct or the common bile duct.

The gallbladder is removed but the common bile duct is left intact. The bile still reaches the intestines but it’s not stored anyplace first.

Most patients are back up and moving again in a few weeks. If you’re suffering from gallbladder attacks, confer with your physician for treatment choices. Low-risk patients might be monitored while those with a history of attacks will more than likely require operative intervention.
