When you go shopping for milk at the store, the choices can be overwhelming.

There are many dairy choices other than what may be right in front of you. Look around the milk section and check out what is there.

Generally, the milk we drink is from cattle. It affords us with calcium, vitamin D and also even good amounts of fat and protein.

Other animals bring us milk, but this article will center on cattle milk and non animal products.

* Whole milk  Rich texture and around four percent milk fat. Kids who are just off of breast milk are generally fed whole milk in order to meet their nutritionary requirements.

* 2% milk  Has less milk fats. It contains 10 grams of protein and is also contains fortified with vitamin A and D. This type of milk isn’t as rich as most other types.

* 1% milk  More thick than water but very close to the same as skim milk. You will gain the vitamins but can avoid additional fat that you get from whole milk. If upi are looking to slim down then this is a good choice. You can also try skim milk.

* Skim milk  Does not contain fat. There are also less calories in this than whole milk. There is a slight blue color to it and it is much the same consistency as water. The vitamins are still present.

* Organic milk  Very much like whole milk but authorized by the govt. to be taken from organic farms. There are less pesticides, antibiotics and hormones in this type of milk.

* Buttermilk  Looks a bit yellow and has a sour smell. There is a reason for this. It has actually been soured. There are added sweeteners but it is made from low fat milk. This is great for making homemade waffles, biscuits and pancakes.

* Soy milk  Great for vegans or vegetarians who do not wish to consume animals. This is derived from ground soybeans. It has the same thickness as milk and plenty of valuable protein in it. It is also about equal in calories to skim milk and comes in various flavors (including chocolate!)

* Flavored milk  Made from 2% or fat free milk. Flavor is added for strawberry milk. Cocoa is used to make chocolate milk. Sugar or sweetener is likewise bestowed for flavoring.

* Powdered milk  This type is processed and treated with heat in order to kill off bacterium. It contains both whole and skim milk. The water is taken away and the result is the powder. It lasts longer on the shelf and can be brought back to life with water for use in cooking.

* Condensed milk  Great for a sweetener in recipes. It’s milk that has had the wate removed from it. Also, has sugar in it which makes it thicker.

There are a lot of other milk types on the market such as camel’s milk. Your selection should depend on your family’s nutritional needs.
