What is insomnia and is it a sleeping disorder? To answer these questions you need to know what a sleeping disorder is and what does it mean when someone has insomnia.

When someone is said to have insomnia they have a condition in which they are having difficulty either falling asleep or staying asleep. Individuals with insomnia may fall asleep quickly, but then wake up too soon and have trouble getting back to sleep. Others with insomnia can’t fall asleep. Either way, they have poor-quality sleep that leaves them feeling unrefreshed, and unable to function properly because they do not feel alert during the day.

There are two types of insomnia including the most common type which is secondary insomnia. Secondary insomnia is when the insomnia is actually a symptom of or a side-effect from another medical problem. There are certain illness in which insomnia could be a side-effect such as heart and lung diseases. Some individuals will experience insomnia when they have pain, anxiety or suffer from depression.

Certain medications may delay or disrupt your sleep as a side effect of those medications. Another possibility is that a sleep disorder such as restless legs syndrome could cause you to not be able to get to sleep. Other things that can disrupt your sleep is a change in your sleep routine or when you have a poor sleep environment.

The other type of insomnia is primary insomnia. Primary insomnia is when you can’t sleep or have trouble staying asleep for one month or longer. Primary insomnia is not associated with any other condition or disease and is not a side-effect from a medication. Primary insomnia is a stand-alone disorder.

Insomnia can cause excessive daytime sleepiness and lack of energy due to the improper amount of sleep and the poor quality of sleep. If you have primary insomnia which is long-term you can suffer from depression or irritability as a result of the insomnia.

Those with insomnia have a difficult time paying attention, may have a hard time learning or remembering. Individuals with insomnia often do not do their best at school, work or at home.

The insomnia can be mild or it can be severe. Factors that determine how severe the insomnia is are how long the insomnia has been going on and how often it occurs.

Treatment:

Secondary insomnia does not usually require treatment as it typically resolves itself given time as the issue that initiates the insomnia is resolved. Better sleeping habits and improved lifestyle changes can have a positive affect on secondary insomnia.

If you have primary insomnia you may need the help of a medical doctor, or sleep specialist in order to find relief for this type of insomnia.

Causes of insomnia:

Secondary insomnia can be a symptom of an emotional, neurological or medical disorder, or it can be a symptom of another sleep disorder such as restless legs syndrome.

Secondary insomnia may be caused by posttraumatic stress disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, anxiety, depression, pain or just plain being too excited about an upcoming event to get to sleep.

Chronic pain such as arthritis, cancer and headaches can cause secondary insomnia. Other conditions such as asthma or heart failure where the individual is having difficulty breathing can lead to insomnia. Gastrointestinal disorders such as heartburn can also contribute to insomnia.

Medications or other substances may also lead to insomnia such as stimulants, caffeine, tobacco, nicotine, alcohol, sedatives, theophylline, and certain allergy and cold medicines and also beta blockers used to treat heart conditions.

Causes of primary insomnia include emotional or medical conditions. Some life-changes can trigger bouts of long-term insomnia such as a change in work schedule, a major life change or long-lasting stress or emotional upset such as a relationship break-up.

The individual with restless leg syndrome is plagued by uncomfortable sensations in the limbs and sometimes the trunk of the body. These symptoms worsen during the evening or at night while the person is trying to sleep. This individual often suffers from insomnia because of the condition and often times are unable to function at work or school because of lack of sleep.

There may be other conditions that are associated with the occurrence of restless leg syndrome (RLS) such as pregnancy, diabetes, and obesity, being a smoker, having an iron deficiency or anemia. Those with nerve disease, polyneuropathy, or suffer from metal toxicity and other toxins or have kidney failure may also suffer from RLS symptoms.

Sometimes other conditions mimic RLS such muscle diseases, joint problems, nerve issues and circulation problems.

Everyone who has RLS will have a treatment plan that is tailored for their age, and the severity of their symptoms so their plan will be different from someone else’s who has RLS. Any associated condition will have to be treated too to make a difference in the symptoms. Lifestyle improvements and relaxation exercises are sometimes all that is needed in order to see a marked improvement in symptoms. Sometimes just quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol as well as learning how to relax when symptoms are noticed is all that it takes to get some much needed relief.

Medications are given only after other treatments fail to give a measure of relief to the patient. This is because some medications especially opioids like propoxyphene or tramadol can be habit forming. Requip is a medication that has been approved by the FDA.

Self-help treatments include: warm/cold baths, electric nerve stimulation, acupuncture and oral magnesium.

Exercise is important as long as it is not done to excessively. Your doctor or physical therapist will help you to learn what exercises will be the most beneficial for you to learn. You may also want to learn some mental exercises to do during times when you must sit for any length of time. Keeping your mind off of the RLS symptoms can be accomplished when you learn these mental activities.

Support groups can be found locally that will help you to find a doctor, or to find more information about lifestyle changes, or relaxation techniques that work for others with RLS. Support groups are not only great for information sharing but also for companionship and a place to be with others who really understand what you are going through on a daily basis.

There are study groups, surveys and research being done by organizations and universities all over the world. Who knows when the next big break may be and there will be new techniques or medications that will bring relief to those who suffer from restless legs syndrome.

Hopefully you have learned some valuable information at a glance that will come in handy for you or someone you know who suffers from RLS and can take something found here and make a difference in their life or someone else’s life.

LegCalm is a natural, safe and effective herbal and homeopathic remedy for treating Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and Periodic Limb Movement (PLM). Presented in convenient capsule form, regular use can help to relieve the symptoms of these troublesome sleep disorders as well as address the underlying causes.

Formulated by a clinical psychologist, LegCalm is pharmaceutically manufactured to the highest standards.

Children are a mystery and a joy to have around. They will make you laugh and also cause you to pull your hair out. But, as a parent it is your job to help them develop healthy habits that will last for a lifetime. Today, we will talk about how to set boundaries for healthy sleep habits.

Children often need more sleep than adults. Their little bodies are growing at an alarming rate each and every day. When the body is at rest, it has a chance to shut down certain systems and get to work on the body. Repairs to tissues are done while the body sleeps.

So, we agree that a child needs sleep. The only person who is not agreeing is your child. They want to play and eat and do everything but sleep. You already know this if you’ve ever tried to put them down to bed before they were ready. No sooner than you’d turned off the light, that little toddler was making his way down the hall with bear in hand to your room.

What is a parent to do?

There are many theories and remedies around, but here we want to give you some tips that will help you to help them to decide that it is time for bed.

* Set a bedtime and stick to it. This will require the help of both parents. If one is out or working late, then the other parent is needed to take over the reins. For example, at eight o’clock each night, march the children to bed. They may try to get you to allow them to stay up longer but remember that consistency is the key here.

* Create a bedtime ritual. Children like to ply their parents with requests for stories, glasses of water and the tucking of the covers. Well, you can give them all of that. Just start about half an hour earlier. If they want a bedtime story or a video, then they have to sit in their bed at 7:30. You don’t have to tell them that it is earlier than their bedtime. In addition, including a nightly bath as part of the ritual before the story will relax them.

* Offer a snack. A child won’t go to bed if their stomach is rumbling. Dinner may have been at five o’clock but it is okay for them to have a snack at seven if they will be in bed in an hour.

* Keep them busy. A playing child is also a sleepy child as the night wears on. Daily exercise can lead to better compliance and a more restful sleep at night.

* Warm the bedroom. A child will usually feel more comfortable if the room is warmer.

Is your child having trouble with going to bed at night? The tips above may be able to help you with that.

Sleep groaning is a rare sleep disorder that involves a person groaning loudly while sleeping. The person groaning is usually not aware of the groaning and may or may not awaken as a result of the groaning noises.

This sleep disorder falls into a different category that talking while asleep does, because the groaning does not culminate into actual words or sentences. Instead, the groaning is a relatively calm and it occurs during a long exhale. This is not a groaning that indicates pain or a nightmare; it is simply a long groan that does not signify anything.

The groans made by people with this sleep disorder usually occur along with very slow breathing. In fact, a characteristic of this sleep disorder is slower breathing than normal while sleeping. The groans end with a grunting noise or sigh instead of simply ending, and this is another characteristic that indicates sleep groaning as a disorder.

Another common characteristic of this rare sleep disorder is that the people affected by the groaning do not display any sort of pain or discomfort with their facial expressions. This can make the groaning seem quite incongruous with a pleasant sleep.

Groaning can also take on the sounds of roaring or other sounds, but it never is in reaction to aggression or other emotional issues. It appears as though people who encounter sleep groaning simply seem to have a propensity toward groaning in their sleep, and this may not point to any deeper issue. The reason why this disorder can become such a bother is twofold. People affected by this disorder may not feel as well rested when morning rolls around because their quality of sleep is not as good as a result of the groaning, even if they don’t awaken completely as a result of the groaning.

The other major issue with sleep groaning is the effect it has on the other people in the same home as the person experiencing the disorder. Because the groaning can sound relatively aggressive, alarming, or even scary, it becomes an issue for a spouse or anyone else within earshot. While the person groaning may not even wake up during an episode, the groaning is usually so loud that everyone else is woken up. Even though a spouse doesn’t have the sleep disorder, his or her sleep is greatly affected.

Unfortunately, unless it is discovered that there is a medical reason for the person groaning while sleeping, there may not be any way for the disorder to be treated effectively. In some instances, a sleep specialist or doctor may discover a cause for the groaning and be able to help the person affected to stop groaning at night.

In other instances, however, the groaner and family members will have to simply learn to live with the episodes. The groaning may becomes less alarming over time as the family members become used to the noise, but this does not mean their sleep won’t get interrupted every time a groan escapes the person’s mouth.

Related Natural Product

Sleep disorders can affect the amount of sleep, the quality of sleep and the timing of sleep. There are more than seventy types of sleep disorders that can cause various kinds of conditions.

Some of these are:

* Transient Insomnia – a temporary condition that does not last for more than a week. Sometimes, it occurs for a couple of days and then fades away on its own.
* Acute Insomnia – a condition wherein the afflicted cannot sleep well for a long period. This could last from a couple of weeks to six months.
* Chronic Insomnia – a serious sleep disorder that persists every night.

Generally speaking, everyone suffers from some type of insomnia at some time or the other in a lifetime. Insomnia is not a disease but a symptom of an underlying condition. It can happen due to psychological disorders or physical conditions. The causes of insomnia can be varied and therefore the condition should be treated based on the underlying reason behind the cause.

Some conditions that can cause insomnia are:

* Psychological conditions
* Stress
* Depression
* Bipolar disorders
* Fear
* Anxiety
* Physical Conditions
* Hormonal changes in women during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause.
* Pain
* Overweight and lack of exercise.
* Dehydration increases toxicity in the body leading to pain and sleeplessness.
* Gastro-esophageal disorders where acids move up from the stomach to the throat and inhibit sleep.

Insomnia can also be caused by:

* temporary events like jet lag that disturb the biological clock of the body
* over indulgence in alcoholic drinks
* excessive intake of caffeine, nicotine and sugar
* side effects of medication
* noise pollution, extreme temperatures and other environmental factors

The type of solution that you should look for depends largely on the implicit condition that is causing insomnia. Insomnia caused by temporary events or environmental causes does not need any treatment. It is likely to fade away as soon as the temporary event is over.

However, insomnia that is caused by physical conditions needs to be addressed. Care needs to be taken that the medication does not cause insomnia since many medications can lead to a disturbed sleep. Managing your weight and regular exercise can remove many insomniac conditions.

If the insomnia is caused due to psychological conditions, the treatment requires deft management. Treating depression, which is a cause of insomnia in certain cases, takes time. It is a slow process that may require multiple changes in medication. You can make the choice of treating depression naturally to avoid side effects that antidepressants cause.

Ancient therapies like acupressure, acupuncture, meditation, yoga and herbal oil massages are also impressive techniques that have been in use for ages as part of natural treatments for depression. These therapies also treat insomnia if that is one of the symptoms that depression is causing.

Natural remedies for depression such as herbs, homeopathic remedies and diet modifications can also be adopted.

Insomnia is also an integral part of the aging process. People tend to sleep less with increasing age. But any insomnia issues should not be ignored and proper professional help should be sought. Geriatric insomnia also needs management. People can cope with it by exercising regularly and keeping active.

They can help to determine if you have a sleep disorder and how severe the sleep disorder is. Sleep studies are beneficial because they can diagnose a sleeping problem that if left untreated could put an individual at risk for serious health issues such as having high blood pressure, which could lead to a heart attack or a stroke.

If left up to the individual they might never be aware of breathing difficulties or movements issues that they have during sleep because when you are asleep you are mostly unaware of breathing difficulties and may or may not be aware of any movements that you are making during your sleep. These movements can disturb your sleep.

Individuals who repeatedly feel tired at school or work, have difficulties staying awake during the daytime or who have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep should seek medical help in determining if they have a sleep disorder or not. It is also important to know the extent of your sleeping disorder, as this will determine the best treatment for you.

Sleep studies are used in the diagnosis of sleep apnea, sleep-related seizure disorders, parasomnias such as sleepwalking and sleep talking, narcolepsy, insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders.

There are four basic types of sleep studies including polysomnogram (PSG), multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) and actigraphy.

The polysomnogram (PSG) is done while you stay overnight at a sleep center. The PSG records your brain activity, eye movements, heart rate and blood pressure while you sleep. It also records the amount of oxygen that you have in you blood while you sleep and how much airflow is moving through your nose while you breath. It records your chest movements while you sleep and can also record any breathing sounds such as snoring that occur during your sleep.

The PSG is used to diagnose insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleep-related seizure disorders and sleepwalking. If you are using a CPAP machine your doctor may recommend a PSG in order to regulate the setting on your CPAP.

If you had surgery to correct an obstruction, a PSG may be ordered to see how well the surgery worked.

A Multiple Sleep Latency Test is a daytime sleep study that measure how sleepy you get during the day. You are hooked up to the machine during the daytime in a quiet room for 30 minutes. Rapid eye movement is monitored. The test is then repeated 3 or 4 times during the day to compare readings. This study is usually done the day after an overnight PSG is done. Multiple sleep latency tests are done to diagnose sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia and circadian rhythm disorders.

A Maintenance of Wakefulness test is done in order to check your ability to stay awake during the day for your safety and for the public’s safety and also to check your response to medication.

Actigraphy is a sleep study that is done as you go about your regular daily routine and does not require an overnight stay in a sleep clinic. It is a device that is worn like a wristwatch. You may need to wear the device for several days. You do not wear the device while in water. This test is designed to give the doctor an idea of your sleep habits.

Many people are familiar with the concept of Narcolepsy since it has been referred to in movies and stories, many times in a comical sense. The common image is of a person in the middle of a conversation who suddenly drops to the ground, having gone from a state of alertness to an immediate state of complete sleep. The person awakens, not having realized that the sleep ever occurred, and continues on with the conversation.

Narcolepsy is not necessarily as it is portrayed in the movies. People who suffer from narcolepsy may not suddenly fall asleep with no warning whatsoever, although some extremely rare instances of this sleep disorder are characterized by this type of behavior. The majority of people with Narcolepsy, however, have issues with getting overwhelmed with sleepiness throughout the day and sometimes succumbing to the need for a nap.

There are different degrees of Narcolepsy. Some people may simply have a problem with getting very sleepy during the day while other people may have a variety of issues that all point to Narcolepsy. One example includes sleeping while engaged in conversation or working, and not even appearing asleep to the people around you. While people might think that you are allowing your mind to wander, or you might begin to believe that you have memory problems because you don’t remember things people have told you, the truth is that you are actually sleeping during your interactions. You just don’t appear to be asleep because your eyes are open and the people around you can’t tell that you’re sleeping.

Other interesting characteristics of the rarer forms of Narcolepsy include hallucinations and brief periods of paralysis. Having hallucinations when waking up can be a sign of Narcolepsy, but it is not an absolute indicator of a diagnosis. People with severe Narcolepsy may find themselves experiencing dramatic and scary hallucinations as a result of their rare sleep disorder. Sleep paralysis is actually a relatively common thing; our bodies are essentially “paralyzed” while we sleep so that we do not act out all the actions in our dreams, but for a person with Narcolepsy the paralysis goes beyond the usual sleep paralysis. A Narcoleptic person might be completely paralyzed upon waking up, yet completely aware of the situation and understandably terrified.

There is medication that is designed to assist people who have varying degrees of Narcolepsy. Medication can usually be quite effective in helping people stay awake in daytime hours and then get a full night’s sleep. Some people do not like the medication because the stimulant factor designed to keep them awake during the day makes them feel nervous or jittery. It is a trade-off for some Narcoleptics; either they continue to have perpetually erratic sleeping habits, or instead they have to stay on course with a series of medications. Some Narcoleptics don’t have a choice, however, because for them the urge to sleep during the day is so powerful that they wind up falling asleep while driving or at other dangerous times. For these rare instances, medication can be a life-saver.

We eat and drink to keep our body running, but what about sleeping? It’s seriously deficient in some of our every day regimens.

You might believe that you’re surviving fine, but are you truly? Other people in your life might be suffering from your lack of sleep.

The Importance of Sleep

And you likely thought that sleep was something you did when you had nothing else to do? Sleep is a portion of the regular every day cycle of our lives.

When the body is at rest, it’s time to process what has occurred during the daytime and access the situation.

You likely get a taste of this when you first lie down. Your mind seems to be going a mile a minute. It frequently takes numerous minutes before it calms down and you are able to close your eyes.

The body likewise requires you to “quieten down” so it can go to work. When you sleep, systems that do not need to run are closed down. Then, repairs occur to cells, organs and anything else that requires attention.

The longer you rest (7-8 hours on the average for adults), the more repair work gets performed and the better rested you feel the next day.

Lack of Sleep

At first, you might not notice that you’re being affected by shorter and shorter sleep cycles, but it will sooner or later become evident. Prior to that it might be observable to those around you. A few of the symptoms of deficiency of sleep are:

* Irritability
* Confusion
* Lack of focus and concentration
* Short temper
* Overeating
* Drowsiness
* Increased stress

Relationship Woes

When you suffer, so do the other people in your life. Folks around you will bear the brunt of the results of your deficiency of sleep. Here are a a couple of scenarios.

Kids might feel the effects. Where at one time you were sitting and playing with them after work, you’re now exhausted and cranky. That may translate into less patience with them and no time for family time.

Spouses likewise feel the effects. More arguments over topics that you’d once discuss aren’t uncommon. Intimacy frequently goes out the window in favor of additional time to sleep.

Life in the workplace is likewise wrought with tension. Stress is more likely here and without sleep, it becomes less manageable. That may lead to increase in caffeine consumption and likewise increase in poor eating habits to stay awake. Conflicts with workfellows are likewise a potential result.

Deficiency of sleep does not merely have an adverse effect upon you, but likewise affects all of the people and activities in your life. Without proper sleep, every day stresses become gigantic problems that are tough to handle. When you can not cope, your relationships with other people may be compromised in some manner. To cultivate your connection with those you care about, get some sleep.

Natural Supplements Can Help Sleep

Did you know that in 2007, 64 million Americans were regularly suffering from insomnia? Over time, lack of sleep can seriously interfere with your body’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Sleep disorders are very serious and need to be addressed immediately, preferably without sleeping pills or drugs as they could very easily become addictive. Lack of sleep will cause your immune system to weaken.

It is actually a symptom of some other ailment. The natural fall out of this fact is that treating the condition that is implicitly causing insomnia will automatically cure sleeplessness. For example by treating depression you are most likely to be cured of the accompanying sleep problems too.

Sedatives are the easiest way to induce sleep. A sleeping pill taken before bedtime is all it takes to make you get into deep slumber. A sedative acts upon the body quickly and within a few minutes the drowsiness sets in. The irony is that most people use sedatives without realizing that they have addictive properties. Just as treating depression naturally can be of great help to you, herbs for insomnia can help in getting rid of insomnia without causing any side effects.

The herbs that are used for treating insomnia depend on the specific case. In some cases a standalone remedy is required. In other conditions herbal preparations containing a combination of herbs that complement each other is used. Herbs focus on boosting energy levels, curbing stress levels and relieving mental and physical fatigue to treat insomnia. Not only do these herbs cure insomnia but are also effective in treating various other conditions.

For example, valerian root is a common herb used for insomnia. It also eases anxiety and pain.

Lemon Balm, another herb for insomnia, has anti bacterial and anti spasmodic properties. It also helps in maintaining thyroid health and promoting digestion and appetite.

A word of caution needs to be added here! Not all herbs are suited for everyone. In a situation where everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon, it is difficult to sift the genuine products from the counterfeit. Simply because you saw an advertisement eulogizing the benefits of a particular herb or a formulation should not be enough reason for you to use it.

Admittedly, herbs do have an edge over conventional drugs because they do not cause any health problems as they cure. But rampant use of herbs can be detrimental to overall health and should be used only when required. It is imperative to know as to which herb will suit a particular condition of insomnia. The next time you need to know about natural remedies for depression or insomnia, check with knowledgeable sources. A specialist will guide you about the best herbs that suit your particular condition of insomnia.

When people think of sleep disorders they most commonly think of insomnia, a problem characterized by the sufferer not being able to get the kind of sleep he would like. Sometimes the issue may be not falling asleep easily, while other people will wake up before they want to and not be able to get back to sleep. All in all, insomnia can be quite frustrating especially when the person affected feels tired and sluggish throughout the day due to lack of sufficient sleep. Insomnia can come and go, and sometimes it can be directly related to health issues or issues of stress.

Paradoxical Insomnia is different. This rare sleep disorder is similar to traditional insomnia in the sense that the person experiencing this disorder does not get sufficient sleep either as a result of not falling asleep on time or waking up before the person is ready. The difference is that Paradoxical Insomnia also has characteristics that make the disorder particularly tough to deal with. People with this disorder not only have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep, but they also may feel as though everything around them is louder and brighter than it actually is. In other words, not only can they not sleep, but everything in their surroundings is keeping them awake whether they like it or not. The ticking of the clock seems louder, the light from the button on the phone seems brighter, and all the while they get more and more frustrated that they can’t seem to fall asleep.

People with Paradoxical Insomnia may report that they are up all night long when in fact they do get sleep. This rare sleep disorder comes with a distortion in the person’s mind as to how much sleep they are actually getting at night. While a sufferer may complain of barely getting one or two hours of sleep each night, if a sleep study is conducted it may be discovered that the person is actually getting much more sleep and just isn’t aware of it. In fact, some people who think they get absolutely no sleep actually do get sleep but they just dream that they are awake. Obviously, this rare sleep disorder can be perplexing and frustrating for people who are affected by it.

Since Paradoxical Insomnia is a rare disorder it is important to get evaluated by a doctor or sleep specialist before accepting it as a diagnosis. There are other sleep disorders which have similar symptoms, so sometimes it may be difficult to make a proper diagnosis. Once all other disorders have been ruled out and it has been determined that nothing else is causing the sleep problems (such as drugs or medical problems) then a doctor may prescribe medication that will help the person fall asleep and stay asleep. Many sleep experts also suggest that people learn to retrain their bodies to fall asleep and to stay asleep without drugs, but to instead use behavioral therapy and relaxation exercises. Talk to a doctor to find out what will work best for you.

People who have sleep disorders – whether rare or quite common – know how frustrating it can be to not get a good night’s sleep. Sometimes it is true that the rarer the sleep disorder, the less that is known about it, and therefore treatment may be ineffective or hard to come by.

Many people who suffer from rare sleep disorders will wind up with a prescription for sleeping drugs while other people will turn to sleep and relaxation-inducing pills on their own.

Some people do need some help falling asleep and staying asleep, and there are plenty of drugs designed to assist people with these needs. Only a doctor can prescribe sleep assistance drugs that are of prescription strength, but there is a wide variety of sleep pills that can be purchased over the counter. Some herbal supplements are marketed as assisting in sleep.

The problem with turning to drugs as a first choice is that it may make it harder to diagnose a rare sleep disorder. The sufferer starts taking over the counter sleep aids because she can’t seem to fall asleep, stay asleep, or just feels like she isn’t getting a full night’s sleep and hopes that the pills will help her to feel better rested when morning comes. Instead, what she winds up doing is simply masking the symptoms, which makes her feel as though she doesn’t need to visit a doctor with her concerns.

Additionally, some sleep aides can be habit forming, so by the time the person heads to the doctor with concerns she still has a rare sleep disorder as well as an unhealthy reliance on sleeping pills. Obviously it is far better to visit a medical professional at the first signs of a sleep problem to rule out any sleep disorders while also finding out about the various medications available.

Even worse, some people will turn to drugs that are not even designed as sleep aides and which might also be illegal. Perhaps someone turns to alcohol every night in an attempt to get sleepy, or maybe a person smokes marijuana before going to bed in the hopes of relaxing enough to stay asleep.

Similarly to the previously mentioned scenario, these people are setting themselves up for some real problems. They’ll wind up seeking medical help for their chemical dependency, but it may not ever come to light that the root cause of it all is a sleep disorder.

It is true that people with rare sleep disorders will probably wind up sampling prescription sleep medications at some point, but it should be through the advice of a medical professional. The ultimate goal is to treat the rare sleep disorder to where no drugs are necessary in order for the person to get a good night’s sleep, but the treatment can be laborious and long.

While taking an occasional sleep aid isn’t necessarily dangerous, people with rare sleep disorders should not focus on one night’s sleep but instead look at the bigger picture and seek out help so they can start sleeping well consistently.

Disruptive sleep-related disorders are called parasomnias. They are undesirable physical or veral behaviors or experiences that people have that are associated with sleep or the sleep-awake transition phase.

There are two phases of parasomnias. The primary and the secondary phases are the two different categories of parasomnias. Primary parasomnias are those that are disorders of sleep states and are classified according to the stage of sleep in which they originate. Secondary parasomnias are disorder of other systems that happen during sleep such as the person having seizures, respiratory difficulty, arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) or gastroesophageal reflux.

There are different parasomnias but the most common of the disorders are nightmare disorder, sleep terror disorder, sleepwalking, REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs syndrome (RLS), and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD).

Nightmare disorder may also be referred to as dream anxiety attack. Children often suffer from nightmare disorder. These nightmares occur during the REM sleep stage and are associated with an increase in heart rate or tachycardia and an increase in the rate at which the person is breathing. The individual may sweat profusely and may or may not remember the night terror when he/she awakes.

Sleep terror involves a sudden, loud or terrified scream while asleep followed by activities such as hitting objects, moving in and out of the bedroom, and may involve injuring themselves. This is a disturbance of the third or fourth stage of sleep.

Sleepwalking disorder is when individuals wander aimlessly around, carry objects, go outdoors, and perform activities even driving while asleep. They usually cannot communicate but may mumble while asleep. This disturbance occurs during the slow-wave stage of NREM sleep.

REM sleep behavior disorder is when individuals act out what they are dreaming, which may include talking, yelling, punching, kicking, sitting, jumping out of bed, and arm movements.

Restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder are also common disorders that happen sometimes with the same person and can cause excessive daytime sleepiness.

Causes of Sleep Disorders:

The nightmare disorder can be caused by personality disorders, relationship difficulties, and various stresses of life. Certain drugs can also cause nightmare disorder such as beta-adrenergic drugs, and going through withdrawal of REM-suppressing medications.

The causes for sleep terror disorder may be that the person has a fever, has had a period of sleep deprivation such as interns working multiple shifts at the hospital, and CNS depressant drugs.

Sleepwalking disorder may be hereditary or run in families. Some drugs such as lithium, desipramine, chloral hydrate, thiroridazine and fluphenazine can also cause sleepwalking disorder. A person with a fever may also have this happen. Sometimes sleep deprivation or obstructive sleep apnea can lead to sleepwalking disorder or even something as simple as a full bladder.

Older people may sleep less at night and have small naps during the day to fulfill the body’s requirement of sleep.

But getting a restful sleep is not something that everyone enjoys. There are many people who suffer from insomnia either due to a physical disturbance or a mental turmoil.

Taking sleeping pills to cure insomnia is just a temporary solution. To add to that it is also a dangerous one. Short term or long term use lead to psychological dependence and addiction. It is advisable to try out some home remedies before you pop in the pill to induce sleep. Home remedies are based on natural processes and products and can at times be extremely helpful in inducing sleep.

If your physical activity levels during the day are low, you are liable to develop what is known as a Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). Uneasiness in the legs makes it difficult for the brain to rest. This can keep you from getting a restful sleep. Increasing physical activity helps in better sleep. If you cannot find time to go to the gym in the evening, try and make adjustments in your work schedules.

Make better choices – take the stairs when you can, get up on your own instead of using the internal extension numbers. Small changes like this will automatically increase your activity levels, reducing the chances of a RLS.

Sometimes too many challenges in a day at work can agitate the mind to an extent that shedding those thoughts become difficult. A long walk in the evening can relieve stress. It also tires you a little; just enough to let you sleep peacefully.

There are specific yogic postures that can help in relaxing the mind and body. These postures do not put too much pressure on the muscles. Deep breathing coupled with some simple postures have contributed significantly in helping insomnia patients.

A cup of hot milk, preferably with honey and a pinch of cinnamon, acts as a natural sedative if taken at bedtime. Honey has been known to be effective in bringing on sleep. Two teaspoons of honey in warm water before bedtime can do the trick in many cases.

Just as some foods help in restful sleep, there are others that can have the opposite effect. The caffeine content in coffee and caffeinated colas stimulates the mind and can keep you awake for long periods. A heavy dinner will also lead to a situation where sleep does not come easy. This happens due to the fact that the digestive system requires time to digest food. Avoiding caffeine and choosing to have a light dinner are advocated if you want to ensure a good night’s sleep.

A warm bath just before going to bed has been a favorite home remedy among many. A hot bath can change the body temperature and therefore assists in the relaxation process.

If you have brought your worries from office to home it is most likely that you will find it difficult to sleep. Learn how to turn off your mind by meditation, relaxation techniques and positive thinking. It is a time tested home remedy for insomnia.

Insomnia is almost always a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Some of the major reasons behind insomnia are mental conditions like clinical depression and bipolar disorder. Natural remedies for depression is also an option that you can choose.

Treating depression naturally helps you avoid all the side effects that come along with antidepressants and mood elevators. Since insomnia is a significant symptom of depression, treating depression can help you rid yourself of sleepless nights.

Many people who have sleep disorders don’t even realize that they have them, and most people with rare sleep disorders have such interesting and bizarre symptoms that they convince themselves these things aren’t actually happening and they are instead simply a product of imaginative dreams.

Just because a sleep disorder is rare, however, it does not mean that they don’t occur. In fact, some rare sleep disorders have such specific attributes that once you seek out medical help and list your symptoms it will be immediately obvious what the problem is.

The first step to figuring out if you have a rare sleep disorder is trying to find out if you have any sleep disorder at all. Do you wake up frequently throughout the night, or have trouble falling asleep at all? Do you wake up too early, or toss and turn so much that you can’t seem to get comfortable at night?

You may not even be personally aware of your sleeping problems, but if family members reveal to you that you have bizarre habits during sleeping hours then this is a pretty reliable indication that you have a sleep disorder.

You need to rule out any environmental factors before assuming that you have a sleep disorder. Do you take drugs prescription or otherwise that may be disrupting your sleep patterns or ability to fall and stay asleep? Is there something within your sleeping area that may be interrupting your sleep, such as noisy neighbors, traffic, or pets that don’t spend much time sleeping at night? You need to rule these things out before seeking medical assistance for a sleeping disorder.

Your level of stress can also have a huge effect on the quality of sleep that you get. Even if you are exhausted by the time night rolls around, a day full of stress and toil can set the stage for a sleepless night. Even if you don’t realize that your mind is still mulling over the events of the day while you’re trying to fall asleep the probability is high. In this instance, it may not be a rare sleep disorder that’s keeping you from getting quality sleep. You may need to learn some relaxation techniques.

Once you have ruled out chemical, environmental, and stress-induced reasons for your poor sleep, it’s time to head to the doctor to chat about some ways you can sleep better. It is a great idea to first do some research online to learn about the various sleep disorders that exist. If you run across something that sounds exactly like the problems you’re having then be sure to bring it up to your doctor.

Even if something is classified as “rare” among sleeping disorders, you should not shy away from discussing it with your doctor. You may actually have a combination of sleep disorders that might be treated all at the same time or individually, because it is certainly not rare for more than one sleep disorder to exist at the same time. Even if your sleep disorder is rare, you will probably be able to encounter some relief by seeking medical assistance.

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder where there is a 10 second or longer interval in between each breath. In order to be considered apneic there must also be a neurological arousal, which is a change in EEG frequency of more than 3 seconds, and/or the blood oxygen must be desaturated by 3-4% or more. A significant case of sleep apnea has 5 or more of these apneic episodes each hour. These facts are discovered by using a sleep test called a polysomnogram.

There are 3 different types of sleep apnea:

Central sleep apnea – This happens when the respiratory system does not put out adequate effort. A chemical imbalance in the brain makes the respiratory controls operate ineffectively.

A delayed reaction to the levels of Co2 in the blood actually causes the sleeper to stop breathing and then start breathing again after a pause. If you were observing this event you would notice that there is no struggle or strange chest movements.

These events even happen during wakefulness. Since the brain cells need oxygen to survive extreme cases can lead to brain damage or even death.

Obstructive sleep apnea – The respiratory system is physically hindered from working efficiently. This form often occurs in people who or overweight, drink alcohol or smoke. People who have weak muscles and soft tissue surrounding the airpath through the throat; or other body features that cause a narrow airway are considered to be at risk for this type.

Complex sleep apnea (mixed) – Transition’s between obstructive and central sleep apnea. This often occurs to someone who has been suffering from the obstructive type for a long period of time.

No matter which type of sleep apnea that is occuring it is not something that the individual is conscious of. A witness can often tell that the sufferer is having apneic episodes. These sleep disturbances can go on for many years without even being noticed. The only thing that might be noticed is waking up and feeling unrested.

A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device is the most prescribed treatment for those suffering apneic symptoms. It actually forces pressurized air into the throat during sleep. This causes the airway to stay open and often cures the problem altogether.

If you are waking up feeling fatigued, you should ask someone to observe you during the night to see if there are any strange pauses in your breathing. If you are someone who snores a lot, this is often a telltale sign that there might be something wrong. Giving up on the alcohol, narcotics and cigarettes can give you a better nights sleep whether or not you suffer apneic symptoms.

Most of us don’t realize the true value that sleep can have on our bodies and minds and the majority of us don’t get enough of it. While for some of us this is due to suffering from a sleep disorder such as insomnia, others just stay up too late and have commitments which require us to get up early. Getting enough quality sleep is essential to getting us through our day but also for our overall health.

One of the biggest things that lack of sleep has on our bodies is our hormones; various hormones in our body work together and have an effect on our health. When we suffer from lack of sleep we begin to crave more carbohydrates and sugar, our blood sugar levels will also fluctuate. If we don’t get enough sleep it can cause problems with out adrenal glands, the adrenal glands regulate your body’s health, when our adrenal glands start suffering, and we start to suffer.

One of the main problems being an increase in hormone cortisol, cortisol helps us to resist stress, maintain our blood pressure and our moods are dependant on it. However if there is an increase in cortisol then it can cause adverse reactions within our body and is not good for us.

So what can we do to ensure that we get enough sleep? Here are some tips to help

* Avoid eating before going to bed – if possible do not eat after 7pm, the later you eat the less time your body has to digest food before you go to bed. Instead of resting your body will spend all night digesting the food you ate. Also going to bed on a full stomach will lead to you feeling uncomfortable and tossing and turning all night long.
* Get enough exercise throughout the day – if you aren’t getting enough exercise throughout the day then you aren’t going to be tired. Getting regular exercise not only gets you fitter but also helps you to get a good nights rest.
* Dim your lights – just as the sun streaming through your window first thing in the morning starts your day off by energizing you, dimming your lights at night can encourage your body to slow down and unwind.
* Buy a suitable mattress – if you are having trouble getting comfortable at night in bed then consider buying a new mattress, if your mattress is old and worn this could be the reason you are tossing and turning all night.
* Have a schedule and keep to it – develop a healthy internal clock by getting yourself into a routine. Get up at the same time every morning and go to bed at the same time.
* Avoid taking naps – where possible stay awake and don’t take a nap during the day, taking a nap during the day confuses your internal clock and you are not as tired when it comes to going to bed.
* Keep your bedroom relaxed – avoid turning your bedroom into an office, don’t put a desk or computer in there and be tempted to work. If you have work in there you are more than likely going to thinking of the things you have done or should have done and this can keep you awake.
* A hot drink – try winding down with a hot drink before going to bed, of course give this time to go through your body before lying down for the night, otherwise you will awaken with the need to go to the bathroom. Preferably make cocoa with hot milk but avoid coffee and tea.

The long list of warnings that accompany drugs for serious ailments has helped in the resurgence and acceptance of herbal remedies.

Treating depression and the various symptoms like insomnia that accompany the issue are a point in case. Conventional drugs that are used to treat depression are habit forming. Even discontinuing these drugs is not easy.

Discontinuation causes withdrawal symptoms and the patient needs to undergo a detoxification program to ensure the complete removal of the drugs from the system. On the other hand, herbal remedies for depression and insomnia are safe. They do not have any side effects, treat the root cause of the problem and have a holistic approach towards the condition.

* Valerian is a wild herb and a natural sedative. It also reduces anxiety and tension and therefore helps in sleeping better.

Inhaling the essential oils or applying a few drops of lavender under the pillow gives a sound sleep throughout the night.

* German Chamomile is used medicinally to help in gentle sleep. It is also effective against a sore stomach and irritable bowel syndrome (which are also a cause of insomnia at times). The white-rayed flowers can be taken as an herbal tea. Two teaspoons of dried flower per cup of tea should do the trick.

* California poppy extract acts as a mild sedative when smoked. It should not be confused with opium that contains different type of alkaloids. The effect is far milder than that of opium and this herb is not addictive. A tincture of California poppy is very effective in treating nervousness. Larger doses are used for treating insomnia.

* Kava can be used to make a moderately potent drink. The plant is an ancient Pacific crop and acts like a tranquilizer. A drink of higher potency brings sound dreamless sleep for a considerable time.
* Ginseng has been a mainstay of herbs. Apart from providing energy and vitality, it also helps in inducing sleep in people with mild insomnia.

* Dried female buds of hops have a mild sedative effect on the central nervous system. It is a useful treatment for insomnia, stress and anxiety. In addition, antibacterial qualities stimulate production of gastric juices.

By any means, this is not a comprehensive list of herbal or natural remedies for depression. Marshmallow root, spearmint, passion flower, St. John’s Wort, red clover and reishi mushroom have also been known to have properties that help in inducing natural sleep without any side effects.

Even though herbs are generally safe, it is advisable to understand the affect that each herb has on the system and the quantity that is safe to consume. There are some exceptions to the rule and certain herbs should not be taken in certain conditions.

For example, valerian should not be taken if you are driving or operating machinery. Similarly some herbs are not meant for pregnant women and lactating mothers. Some herbs need to be avoided if you are already taking some other drugs for insomnia.

Sleep experts caution, however, that even rare sleep disorders may be resolved without the use of prescription medicines if the people experiencing the sleep disorders make an effort to really set the stage for a good night’s sleep.

Many times this takes behavioral modifications that may be completely contrary to what the person is used to, but many people find that by changing their behavior in relation to how they view their bed and how they approach the time for sleep can truly have a huge effect on how well they get to sleep every night.

What many people don’t realize is that their bodies often require some advanced notice and preparation time prior to attempting to fall asleep. Not everyone has the capability of going straight from an active state to suddenly winding down and falling into a state of restful sleep. It is this lack of transition and lack of preparation that often causes a rare sleep disorder to develop.

It is the body’s way of coping with something it can’t handle. For this reason, it is extremely important for people to make sure their bodies receive sufficient notice that sleep is imminent. Parents are often urged to set up a nighttime ritual for their kids to prepare them each night for sleeping, and there is no reason why an adult should not also have a persistent nighttime ritual. It might include a brief time for reading, then a warm shower, and then heading off to bed.

What it shouldn’t include is watching an exhilarating program on television, doing rigorous exercises, or pondering over things that are upsetting or worrisome. These activities certainly do not set the stage for a good night’s sleep.

People should avoid activities in bed that do not pertain to sleeping. Reading in bed, watching television in bed, or eating in bed are all bad habits that can really make falling asleep more difficult. If you insist on engaging in these activities right before bedtime, consider doing them in a separate room where they will not affect your ability to get to sleep and to stay asleep.

Believe it or not, caffeine and alcohol consumption many hours prior to bedtime might affect your ability to fall asleep. You may not think that coffee on the way home from work could possibly influence your sleep that night, but studies have shown time and again that caffeine and alcohol can have a huge effect on quality of sleep even when the consumption takes place hours before attempting to fall asleep.

If you think you may have a sleeping disorder rare or otherwise you should first take a look at your behaviors prior to bedtime to see if there are some activities you can eliminate that might be making it more difficult for you to get some quality sleep.

Thanks to the media, restless leg syndrome (RLS) is becoming recognized by more individuals. RLS disturbs the sleep of not only the person who has it but their bed partner as well because the individual besides RLS can also have spastic limb movements that can disturb the sleep of both individuals. The individual with RLS experiences a prickling, tingling or crawling sensation in their legs.

The feelings are relieved when they move their legs. Sometimes RLS can occur in the arms. RLS makes riding in a vehicle, watching TV, reading or any activity in which you need to be inactive, in a sitting position or lying in a bed to be most difficult. There are a lot of activities where individuals need to sit still including sitting at your desk at work, sitting in a movie theater, sitting on an airplane, sitting in a vehicle, boat or train, sitting in a lecture hall at college just to name a few.

Those who suffer from RLS can also experience periodic limb movements (PLMD) during sleep. These are leg or arm jerks or movement during sleep. These movements occur every 20 to 40 seconds and can really disturb your sleep. The individual and his/her partner will both become excessively sleepy during the daytime because of these disturbances.

How can you tell if you might have RLS or PLMS? You may suspect that you may have RLS or PLMS if you do not feel refreshed when you wake in the morning, your legs ache either before bedtime or when you get up, and your bed partner complains that you kick while you are asleep. If these situations seem familiar you should have your doctor examine you for RLS and/or PLMS.

An individual can sometimes receive temporary relief by getting up and walking around, by taking a hot shower, or by rubbing the affected legs or arms.

Things that disturb our sleep can lead to health problems because sleep is needed for everyday life functioning. Breathing and eating, memory, learning new things, and the release of hormones are all affected by sleep. Studies have also shown that the amount of sleep you receive is related to your ability to solve problems or be creative.

There can be serious health consequences to not getting enough sleep including hypertension, heart disease, and depression. Possible health risks is one reason why it is important for anyone who suspects RLS or PLMS to have a medical evaluation to determine if you do have these sleep disorders. If you do have them, there are treatments to help relieve your symptoms.

Researchers have also found that if you get more and better sleep that you can control your weight, diabetes and heart problems better.

Children of all ages can experience insomnia too; it is not just partial to adults.

Why won’t my child sleep??

Often when children experience insomnia it can be for some of the very same reasons that adults experience it, a change in schedule as maybe they are going back to school after summer vacation, too much sugar or caffeine, family or school related stress, or a lack of routine. A lack of routine is usually a result of parents not establishing a regular routine and defining a specific bedtime.

While insomnia is a condition and not a disease, it can have a detrimental effect on children as they are tired and grumpy during the day, often hard for teachers to manage, and this can lead to behavior problems too. If this is something that happens every night then it could be the temperament of the child could be the primary reason. If children know that they can get away with it, they will fight sleep for hours to prove a point.

Is it also ADHD?

However, if your child has insomnia that is accompanied with nervousness, irritability, intensity, high strung, excitable, and easily angered, then it might be that your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). There is a direct relationship between ADHD and insomnia in children. Monitor your child and see if they are extremely difficult to wake in the morning and whether it is nearly impossible to turn off their motor at night as this too is associated with ADHD.

Children who have insomnia may actually display signs that are very similar to that of ADHD because they are lacking sleep and their systems are out of whack. Children are really supposed to get 9-11 hours of sleep per night, although studies have displayed that this is rarely the case. Parents need to remember that children who are exhausted can actually still appear to have a lot of energy, but what that really is, is their body’s way of dealing with the tiredness.

In the meantime, they will become ornery and misbehaved which is how they are coping with their lack of sleep. Additionally, you certainly cannot expect a good performance academically.

Sleep is crucial for children

Did you know that sleep is one of the most important factors in a child’s development? This is because during sleep is when their body produces more of the hormones that causes a child to grow. Children between the ages of one and five require 10-12 hours of sleep per night and school age children require about 10 hours of sleep per night.

Tips to help get your child to bed:

1) Do not feed your child large meals close to bedtime, and don’t give her anything containing caffeine less than six hours before bed.

2) Do not turn on any lights and speak to the child in a very soft voice

3) Avoid all activities which may be stimulating after dinner time

4) Either warn your child that bedtime is in 5 minutes, or, give him a choice “Would you like to go to bed now or in 5 minutes” – but only do this one time.

5) Establish a very consistent bedtime time and routine.

6) Make sure your child’s nighttime clothing, bed and room temperature are comfortable.

7) If your child experiences bedtime fears or worries, give him tools to help such as a flashlight, a spray bottle of water or ‘monster spray’, or a large stuffed animal as a protector.

8) Reward your child for going to bed easily and on time. Each time he goes to bed without fuss and stays there, he gets a gold star. After three stars, it’s off to get ice cream or another of his favorite treats.

Other natural ways of helping child sleep problems

Every night before you go to sleep, sit in your bed and start making faces – just as small children enjoy doing, make all kinds of faces, good, bad, ugly, beautiful, so the whole face and the musculature start moving. Make sounds (nonsense sounds will do) and sway, just for ten to fifteen minutes and then go to sleep.

In the morning, before you take your bath, again stand before the mirror and for ten minutes make faces. Standing before the mirror will help: you will be able to see and you will be able to respond

What used to be as fundamental as food, clothing, shelter, love and knowledge is gradually becoming a little more sophisticated.

Perhaps it goes with the times and the recognition of women’s capacity to wield a man’s task while still being able to do their roles as a mother, a wife, a lover, or a daughter. Such demands would pressure women to physically and mentally respond either negatively or positively. These overwhelming demands are the usual cause of stress in women.

Nonetheless, stress can either make you or break you. It all depends on how a woman perceives and interprets stressful conditions. For some women, additional workload is nothing but a challenge for them to perform better. Some women, on the other hand, are not quite susceptible to such abrupt changes.

Aside from that, the actual weight of the experience matters a lot if a woman would take the demand positively or negatively. Everyone has her own weak points and the moment these are tapped, stress and fatigue can easily found for itself a way to take its damaging toll on a woman.

Such stressful experiences are uncontrollable. What you can manage is how these circumstances are perceived so that they will not adversely affect your everyday lives. Stress can be productive if you let the causes of stress alert and motivate you to perform well. If you manage to take stress as a challenge, it will inspire you to improve yourself. How else will you learn if not for such trying situations that force you to do your best?

If you get to see stress as something inevitable especially to women who are flexible and versatile enough to multi-task, you might realize that sometimes, you have to be grateful that things like these come your way. Women are capable of doing almost anything humanly possible all at the same time.

If doing multiple activities at once won’t cause you any stress, then you probably are Wonder Woman. But hey, thing is, Wonderwoman is also prone to stress—the only difference is that she knows how to handle it. Moving to a new house, getting married, taking an entrance exam or going to a job interview, failing—all these spells “living your life,” and during these pressing times, there is no other way to go but up. Lurk down there and you will find yourself too strained to gather yourself back. And there comes the dangers of stress in women.

Long periods of stress would cause women to become irritable, irate, and too emotional to the point that they can no longer do their everyday tasks. Worse comes to worst, such negative stress would cause them physical illness and depression.

Sometimes, these lead to inappropriate coping behaviors such as drinking too much alcohol, overeating, chain smoking, taking illegal drugs or improper dosages of prescribed medications. Sometimes, negative coping behaviors happen within your body without your knowledge of it.

That is why whenever a friend is experiencing an ordeal, significant changes in terms of physique and health conditions begin to surface. Times like these are usually caused by sudden losses especially death of a loved one. Others that could also lead to negative stress are relationship problems, finances, physical, verbal, or sexual abuse, etc.

To cope with such kind of stress, women need whatever support they can get from family, friends and their significant other. Some cases might even need the professional help of a therapist and this has to be given a great consideration. Negligence of such would lead to further depression and illness, or worse, diseases such as cancer and cardiac arrest.

Women are very social and spiritual. To prevent negative stress, they need to constantly be reassured that they are being supported by those inside their peripherals.

Aside from that, helping other people out during their trying times can also make you feel better about your own life. This would convert the cause of negative stress to something that is beneficial to the self as well as to others.

A good night’s sleep is essential to good health. Sleep hygiene is essential to keeping your mind and body rested and strong so that you can stay healthy.

There are many things that you can do to improve your sleep patterns and make a difference if you suffer from sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea. Providing a good sleeping environment will help with any sleep disorder. Here are some tips for providing good sleep hygiene.

Try not to go to bed unless you are sleepy. There are many ways of inducing sleepiness including reading a book, listening to soft, easy listening music, or doing relaxation exercises. If you go to bed and are not asleep within 20 minutes, you should get out of bed and go to another room where you can find something to do that will make you sleepy and then make another attempt to go back to bed.

Bedtime rituals are an excellent way of getting your body ready to sleep. Rituals can include a warm bath, reading before bed, having a light snack and something warm to drink that does not contain stimulants.

Going to bed and getting up at the same time establishes a sleep pattern that will help your body to regulate the “internal clock” and prepare your body for being sleepy at the same time each night.

Avoid taking naps during the day that may interfere with your ability to get to sleep at bedtime.

Scheduling your day so that you have regular times for eating, taking medications, chores, and other activities helps your body to regulate the inner body clock so that things will run more smoothly for you.

It is important not to stimulate your brain just prior to bedtime. Do not watch TV, eat, write, talk on the phone or play cards or other games that requires concentration, thinking or stimulation of any kind before bedtime.

It is important not to consume stimulants such as beverages and foods containing caffeine after lunch and anytime before six hours before bedtime. This includes sources of nicotine before bedtime because it can keep you awake.

It is important not to go to bed hungry as this can keep you up. Do not have a big meal before going to bed, but a light snack can keep you from feeling hungry but not keep you up.

Do not exercise for six hours prior to your bedtime as this can keep you energized and make it difficult to fall asleep. Exercise early on in the day so that it won’t interfere with sleep.

You should speak with your doctor before taking any sleep aids and use them cautiously and with your doctor’s guidance. You should never take alcohol while using sleep medications. You should not take any sleep medications for more than 3 weeks.

Worries and anxieties can keep you awake so try to deal with any issues early on in the day and come to peace with them long before bedtime. Your bed should be a place of rest and not a place to worry about problems or analyze solutions.

Your bedroom should be a sleep inducing place and not a place for activity. It should be quiet and dark, with a comfortable room temperature.

People are often curious about sleep disorders or else they suspect that they may have a sleep disorder and therefore they have lots of questions about sleep disorders. OK, now when you have a sleep disorder of course it won’t take a genius to know you’ll have trouble sleeping!

But there are plenty of medicines to help you sleep, the problem with these medicines is (as most know) they make you drowsy, yeah sure it said on the box “please make sure you can get a good full 8 – 9 hrs of sleep before taking” but come on, everyone’s worried about “well what if there’s a fire, will I wake up?” the solution to making sure you can get up in case of emergency?

Yeah, well, sorry no solution to walking up, except maybe make sure that if you are going to take sleeping pills that you have another adult in the home with you. Come on it’s a sleep medication! It’s doing its job if you can’t wake up!

So if you really want another way to get a good night’s sleep WITHOUT the stupid medicine here you go, now the reason you can’t sleep well is most likely started by your lifestyle, then turned into a habit and eventually yeah a disorder, now if you just started having trouble sleeping keep reading for some excellent questions and answers about sleep disorders.

One reason you might be having trouble sleeping (and it’s a big one) is stress. Come on see a shrink. As soon as you start to have trouble sleeping you need to talk to your doctor.

Question: How do I know if I’m just stressed out or if I really have a sleep disorder?

Answer: You need to talk to your doctor and get help; many people don’t realize how serious a sleep disorder can be. If you are not getting enough sleep it can become hard to think straight, and depending on how long you’ve had this disorder and your lifestyle some people even experience sleepwalking. I know you’re thinking, “Hello if I have a sleep disorder how am I sleepwalking?”

Well your body does not have enough rest so its almost like your in a sort of trance, you are not awake in the sense that you are conscious of what you are doing. The time period for your symptoms can give you a clue as to how serious your sleeping problem is. Disorders can be short-term and long-term.

Most secondary disorders resolve themselves and primary sleeping disorders need medical intervention. Your doctor can examine you and ask about the history of sleep disturbance in order to determine if it is short-term (just stress) or a long-term problem.

Question: What are some main types of sleep disorders?

Answer: Circadian rhythm sleep disorders include delayed or advanced sleep phase syndrome.

Parasomnias include sleepwalking, night terrors, confusional arousals, REM behavior disorder, teeth grinding, bedwetting, and an inability to stay awake during the day.

Movement sleep disorders include restless legs syndrome (RLS) and Periodic limb movement Syndrome (PLMS).

Sleep apnea and snoring are two other types of sleep disturbances.

Question: What are some causes for sleep disorders?

Answer: Insomnia may be caused by migraine headaches or other types of headaches, stimulant usage before bedtime, depression or anxiety, the occurrence of another sleep disorder such as Restless Leg Syndrom (RLS) that keeps you awake or your bed partner awake, a medical condition that causes pain or discomfort, exercising too close to bedtime and certain medications may have the side-effect of keeping you awake.

Circadian disorders may be caused by lifestyle changes like working a different shift, or going through a time zone change while traveling.

Your biological clock being faulty can cause delayed or advanced sleep phase syndrome.

Parasomnias can run in families, be caused by stress, or be the result of a physical illness such as a bladder dysfunction that causes bedwetting that wakes you up, or a mental illness such as unexpressed anger, or a obsessional personality disorder that does not allow you to sleep. Eating sugary foods or drinks too close to bedtime can keep you awake and certain medications can cause nightmares.

Narcolepsy may be caused by a viral infection, a head injury, a disorder of the sleep REM stage, and heredity may also play a role.

Movement disorders may be caused by heredity, medications, pregnancy, stimulants, muscle fatigue but the cause is not certain.

For a small minority of people who actually seek help for a sleep disorder, the problem turns out to be Insufficient Sleep Syndrome. As the name implies, this is a disorder effecting people who simply do not get enough sleep at night. The difference between people affected by this disorder and other people who are perpetually fatigued is that sufferers of Insufficient Sleep Syndrome don’t realize that they aren’t getting enough sleep at night. They aren’t sure why they still feel tired after a night’s sleep, and this is why they wind up seeking treatment.

Oftentimes this disorder can result from lifestyle choices. People start cutting back on sleep in order to get everything done that they need to do throughout the day, and in doing so they convince themselves that they don’t need as much sleep as they thought. They get into the habit of getting far less sleep than their bodies actually require in order to function at full capacity. Eventually their bodies adjust to the change in sleeping habits. They may feel as though they are getting as much sleep as they need because they are able to function without a full eight hours worth of quality sleep, but the truth is that they aren’t functioning nearly as well as they thought they were functioning.

Medical researchers specializing in sleep disorders diagnose people with this sleep disorder when there is no other reason why the patient should be feeling so tired and it is additionally apparent that the patient is not getting as much sleep as they should at night. In other words, if there is no medical or environmental reason why the patient is feeling tired then Insufficient Sleep Syndrome may be the reason.

Patients will often vehemently disagree with the diagnosis, because they will argue that it’s not the quantity of sleep they get that is important, but instead the quality of the sleep. The truth of the matter is, however, that most people need a certain amount of hours of sleep so their bodies can work through the various stages of sleep in order to allow their bodies the rest they need. Busy people may try to convince themselves that they don’t need very much sleep, but once they actually start to get the recommended amount of sleep every night they will probably notice quickly that they feel much better than before.

Insufficient Sleep Syndrome is one of the easiest sleep disorders to treat because it merely involves getting more sleep every night. Once patients get over the initial denial that they actually need to follow the sleep recommendations of their doctors they will probably start to feel much better from getting enough sleep. This syndrome does not necessarily require medications or further treatment beyond the recommendation of more sleep every single night. This means it is up to the patient to follow the recommendation and to make an effort to get the right amount of sleep every night in order to eradicate the symptoms.

It should come as no surprise that researchers have found that sleep apnea and depression are associated. In fact in a recent study scientists have found that sleep apnea causes depression.

Sleep apnea is a condition that reportedly affects between 2 and 4% of the population in the U.S. Physicians however, believe that this number may be abnormally low since the diagnosis of sleep apnea is often over looked by primary care doctors or people attempt to address the symptoms of loud snoring using over the counter remedies without addressing the underlying oxygenation problem.

In a study from Standford University in California U.S. researchers found that people who suffer from depression are five times more likely to have a breathing related sleep disorder than those who don’t suffer from a depressive condition. This is the first study to show a link between depression and sleep apnea.

The study didn’t attempt to explain how these disorders may be linked but it does suggest that when patients present to the physician with complaints of depression they should also be screened for sleep disorders that include obstructive sleep apnea.

Undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea will lead to hypertension, stroke and cognitive deterioration. It can affect school or work performance, social and professional life and affect the daily routine.

There have been several other studies that suggested that sleep apnea was associated with a higher rate of depression but none that had explored the association and the risk factors in the general population.

Interestingly the treatment for sleep apnea will also treat the depression. People with sleep apnea and depression find that with treatment for sleep apnea comes a quick response in their depression.

Treatment for the sleep disorder has a better success rate in treatment of the depression than does just addressing the depression with medication or behavioral therapy. This is because the depression is directly associated with the biological and physiological changes in the body when it is chronically deprived of oxygen through the night.

According to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research 40 million U.S. citizens are chronically ill with a variety of sleep disorders. Sleep apnea is the cause of daytime sleepiness in approximately 20 million people in the U.S.

Psychologists and psychiatrists can play a very important role in the treatment of depression and sleep apnea. The sufferer of sleep apnea will often face social and emotional challenges in accepting the therapy. A significant number of people will fail to comply with the therapy because they may not have enough support and are unable to adjust to the treatment protocols. As soon as the treatment for sleep apnea begins most patients and families notice a change in the personality and functionality of the person. Sometimes this improved personality and functionality isn’t well accepted in a social environment that has accommodated to the previous dysfunction.

Sufferers of sleep apnea who are pursuing therapy may need the support of a counselor or therapist to help them continue to use the treatment protocols and help people in their environment learn to adjust to them.

During normal breathing, air passes through the throat on its way to the lungs. The air travels past the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, and tongue. When a person is awake, the muscles in the back of the throat tighten to hold these structures in place preventing them from collapsing into the airway. During sleep, these structures can fall into the airway causing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is characterized by loud snroing and distrubed or interruped sleep patterns. Sleep apnea can have serious consequences including cardiac problems. Frequently patients will awaken in the morning with a headache. If they become sleep deprived they may feel sleeppy all day, and may fall asleep while driving in the car.

Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a sleep study. During a sleep study, the patient’s breathing patterns, heart rhythim and brain waves are monitored.

If it is found that sleep apnea is present, most doctors recommend the use of CPAP. CPAP is a breathing device worn during sleep to help keep the airway open. In some situations surgery is recommended. The uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with or without tonsillectomy are surgical procedurs designed to open the airway. In rare situations, a tracheostomy is necessary. These are procedures designed to circumvent this sleep related collapse of these structures.

An eating disorder that happens while sleeping usually involves people wandering into the kitchen and eating food while still partially or completely asleep. Sometimes the foods they consume are completely contrary to the foods the people usually prefer. For example, a vegetarian might consume meat products while engaged in an episode of a sleep related eating disorder. This disorder is often compared to sleep walking, but this disorder may occur concurrently or completely separately from sleep walking.

This is a rare and dangerous sleep disorder. Sleep related eating disorders are different from other sleep disorders that occur during waking hours. While anorexia and bulimia are certainly eating disorders, these do not generally occur solely at night during sleeping hours. In other words, people affected by sleep related eating disorders are not making a decision to gorge themselves on food, and are not doing so with the intention of later purging it all out. This is an event that occurs outside of the person’s consciousness, and may not even be remembered until the next morning when the person awakens with a full stomach and a huge mess in the kitchen.

People have a lot of problems with this sleeping disorder because it affects them in several ways. Their quality of sleep is affected because they do not consistently sleep in bed throughout the night. Their health is affected because they are consuming sometimes-mass quantities of food in the middle of the night, and in some instances they might be putting their overall health at risk because at times people with sleep related health disorders will attempt to use a stove or microwave oven in their sleep state. This can lead to injuries and damage.

Perhaps most damaging at all, however, is the psychological effect that this disorder can have a on a person. This sleep disorder can make people feel completely out of control, and can also lead to negative views of their bodies. The sad fact is that sleep related eating disorders can actually lead to other eating and exercise disorders because the affected people turn to extreme methods in an attempt to counteract the massive quantities of calories they take in during an episode of nighttime eating. People with this sleep disorder might limit their calories during the day or may turn to excessive exercise so they do not gain weight as a result of the eating binges. This can leave some people feeling embarrassed and helpless.

If you think you may suffer from a sleep related eating disorder it is important for you to get evaluated by a doctor. There are so many things that can go awry when it comes to nighttime eating while still sleeping, so this is not something that anyone should ignore. Treatment will probably include some habit modifications as well as potential prescribed medicine. The important thing is to get treated so the behavior will stop.

Advanced Sleep Phase is a sleep disorder that becomes more common during the senior years, but is generally rare among the rest of the population. Characteristics of this sleep disorder include falling asleep early and also waking up early, but not as a result of a work schedule or any other outside factor that may force a person into this type of sleep pattern. It is simply the way their body has decided to work.

This sleep disorder can be particularly frustrating for people who would rather not adopt a lifestyle that required them to be home for sleep quite early compared to everyone else. Waking up early is the other characteristic of this sleep disorder, and this can be just as frustrating as having to go to sleep early.

Researchers have found that people affected by this disorder will often attempt to change their sleep patterns by staying up later at night – no matter how exhausted they feel – and they do this in the hopes that they will be able to sleep a little later in the morning since they stayed up the night before. This solution is usually ineffective with sufferers of Advanced Sleep Phase because they will still wake up just as early in the morning as usual no matter what time they went to bed the night before.

Advanced Sleep Phase may not be a problem for some people because they don’t mind having a different sleep schedule than other people. For people who consider it a problem, however, treatment can be tricky. Any time a person attempts to go against the body’s personal “settings” it can be quite difficult and should be approached with a very gradual intent. Any quick changes will only cause the problem to worsen, and in addition to the physical problems this can cause it might also make the sufferer feel even more frustrated in his or her efforts.

Potential treatments for Advanced Sleep Phase can include Light Therapy at night when the person first starts to feel sleepy. The light may prompt the body to stay in an awakened state for a longer period of time. Another potential treatment is the use of melatonin supplements. Melatonin supplements are commonly used by people suffering from jet lag and other temporary sleeping problems, but it has been demonstrated to assist people with this sleeping disorder as well.

There is no guarantee that any treatment designed to assist sufferers of Advanced Sleep Phase will be effective. Some people simply have to accept that their bodies insist on an early bedtime along with an early wake up time in the morning. Most people attempt to adjust to this by taking jobs that are conducive to this type of schedule.

After all, waking up quite early can actually be a big plus for some occupations, and some people like this may not even consider themselves as having any type of sleep disorder at all. It is the people who do not want this type of schedule who seek out assistance from medical professionals for their sleeping issues.
