Interstitial Cystitis is a urinary bladder disease, the cause of which is unknown to the science fraternity. However, several theories do exist which point towards it being an autoimmune, allergic, neurological, and/or genetic disease. What has definitely been established by various studies and research is that the quality of life for patients of interstitial Cystitis compares to that of the end stage of Renal Failure. Regardless of the origin, interstitial Cystitis leads to a damage of the bladder lining and also inhibits bladder cell proliferation, which in turn, have dangerous consequences.

Interstitial cystitis is characterized by Frequent Urination of as often as every ten minutes, urgency, and pain in the bladder or supra-pelvis region. Pain usually increases and decreases as the bladder fills up and empties and in some cases, even while urinating. Interstitial cystitis causes pelvic floor dysfunction making it difficult for patients to start their urine stream. Excessive urination at night, pain with sexual intercourse, difficulty in driving, traveling or working adds to the agony.

UTI is an acronym for Urinary Tract Infection and before understanding what UTI is, a proper understanding of the functioning of the excretory system of our body will not be out of place.

During normal metabolism, body cells produce wastes like carbon dioxide and urea. Blood that contains waste enters the Kidneys that remove urea, excess water and other harmful substances from it. Purified blood returns to Circulation and the wastes are excreted. The fluid that remains, urine, leaves each kidney through a tube, ureter, into a sac like organ called the bladder. The bladder stores urine until it can be released from the body. When you urinate, the bladder muscles help push urine out through the urethra and out. In men urethra passes through the penis and in women it opens just in front of the vagina. A muscle squeezes the bladder shut to keep urine in and relaxes to facilitate urination.

Any anomaly in the functioning of the organs of the body that obstructs the smooth flow of urine has the capability to infect the urinary tract. A Kidney Stone or enlarged prostrate gland in men obstructs the flow of urine leading to urine retention in the bladder. This ultimately goes on to provide a breeding ground for bacteria and cause a UTI.

Some children are born with abnormalities which may lead to an infection in the urinary tract. Baby girls need special care during toilet training so as to minimize the risk of a UTI occurring.

There are external factors too that may lead to a UTI and consequently necessitate Urinary Tract Infection cure
or Bladder Infection treatment. A common source is catheters which are tubes that are inserted into the bladder or urethra of those who are unable to empty the bladder on their own or in critically ill persons. Some elderly people or those with a nervous system disorder may also require insertions of catheter that may continue for life. Although the hospital staff takes good care regarding sterilization, catheters require constant monitoring, to help ward off infection, which tends to be overlooked in many cases.

Cystitis is a type of Urinary Tract Infection where the bladder gets inflamed on being infected with bacteria or viruses. Cystitis ranks as second largest type of infection after respiratory infection with an estimated single occurrence in nearly 10 to 20 percent of women. Out of this percentage at least eighty percent have recurrent Cystitis.

Although ninety percent of all UTI is caused by the bacteria E. Coli, cystitis is known to occur due to fungus or a virus too. If left unchecked for longer periods, cystitis takes a serious shape as it ascends and affects Kidneys. E. Coli normally inhabit intestines and bowel without doing any damage to the urinary tract but if it finds it way to the bladder, it causes infection of the bladder, necessitating Urinary Tract Infection cure.

The major symptoms of cystitis include an urgent and irrepressible need to urinate, difficulty in urination, and a painful burning feeling (Dysuria) sometimes accompanied by mild Fever.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common disease and it is believed that more than 10 million people in US alone have to look for an appropriate Urinary Tract Infection cure every year. Women are affected more than men, either because of their shorter urethra, which makes it easy for accumulated bacteria to travel upwards. It is also due to the closeness of the opening of urethra to the anus and due to some other reasons that are not yet confirmed by the scientists.

Continued allopathic treatment by way of antibiotics runs the risk of side effects. It is also known that the bacteria can also develop a resistance to the existing antibiotics that have been prescribed, if the medication is used for a long time. These issues have led to a continuous exploration of different modes of treatment and alternate therapies.
