The most essential thing that those who suffer from back pain can learn is awareness of the neutral alignment of the spine and the strengthening of the postural muscles to support the alignment. For those people with back pain caused by the degeneration of discs and joints, or poor posture, a Pilate’s exercise program can be beneficial to easing the problem.

Most back problems are caused by bad posture; this can be sitting, walking or standing. This causes us to lose strength in our postural muscles over time and gets worse until eventually you cannot even correct your posture if you want to. Pilates is an exellent form of exercise to remedy this problem too.

Question: from Sherry

COULD YOU TELL ME OF ANY PRODUCTS TO HELP DEGENERATIVE DISK? COULD IT BE CURED? MY SISTER IS 30 AND FOUND OUT SHE HAS THIS.

Answer: from Joanna (Medical Nutritionist for Xtend-Life Natural Supplements)

Degenerative disc disease can have a few degrees of severity depending at what stage it is at.

A healthy disc has a great deal of water in the centre portion. The water content gives the nucleus a spongy quality and allows it to absorb spinal Stress.

Loss of water content causes the discs to lose some of their ability to act as cushions. This can lead to Stress and tears on the disc. As the nucleus loses its water content, it collapses. Without the cushion effect of the discs, the vertebrae in your spine would not be able to absorb stresses or provide the movement needed to bend and twist.

What is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a natural compound that is found in healthy cartilage. Glucosamine Sulfate is a normal constituent of glycoaminoglycans in cartilage matrix and synovial fluid.

Available evidence from randomized controlled trials supports the use of Glucosamine Sulfate in the treatment of osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee. It is believed that the Sulfate moiety provides clinical benefit in the synovial fluid by strengthening cartilage and aiding glycosaminoglycan synthesis. If this hypothesis is confirmed, it would mean that only the glucosamine sulfate form is effective and non-sulfated glucosamine forms are not effective.

Glucosamine is commonly taken in combination with Chondroitin, a glycosaminoglycan derived from articular cartilage. Use of complementary therapies, including glucosamine, is common in patients with osteoarthritis, and may allow for reduced doses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents.

Exercise is very important on so many levels.

Proper alignment of the head over the shoulders over the hips over the knees over the feet, are imperative in maintaining a pain-free body. Firm abdominal muscles help to keep the back straight and strong. Bad posture habits can lock your muscles into positions you are not even aware your body is taking which can put unwanted strain on the lower back.

Exercise conditioning and stretching can improve certain pains with stretching such as painful, stiff muscles and joints by increasing blood flow to these areas. Weight baring exercises are beneficial for improving strength and bone density. Restoring movement and normal function to an injured area is critical. Learn to stretch to improve your flexibility.

Exercise increases the output of endorphins, which are hormones your body produces to fight pain.

Question: from Elaine

I am 61 years old and have seriously injured my knee - possibly a torn tendon at the miniscus. I desperately need to try to heal this, as everything I do is predicated upon walking, lifting, digging (I’m a gardener). Could you suggest a program which might help with this? I have been trying acupuncture for a while to reduce inflammation, but there’s a long way to go. There is a real danger of permanent damage if I can’t improve my situation enough to function safely. I’m grateful for any advice.

Answer: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

Yes, a knee injury is certainly something that you want to fix as soon as possible, more so for you being an active person.

You have to do two things. One, to help settle down the inflammation and two to provide the nutrients needed to help with the repair.
