"Mental Edge" Monday: Butler Who?

Mental Edge Monday Topic #7: Butler Who? I had to take this opportunity to acknowledge the unbelievable ascent to basketball’s elite that Butler University has achieved. As a former college basketball player, the Butler story is unbelievable. For a million dollars, I could not have told you what Conference Butler played in, what state they were from, or one player’s name. Now they are back to the NCAA final for the second year in a row. What gives?

The Plank Exercise 5-Minute Challenge

Mental Edge Monday Topic #23 : The Plank Exercise 5-Minute Challenge – Can you Hang? The plank is one of my favorite exercises. It’s very versatile and demands great effort from your core. It’s also very easy to do, anywhere you are, at any fitness level, with no equipment. It’s also why you will find several variations of the plank exercise in quite a few FitDecks. I like to challenge myself to exercises that anyone can do. Nobody has any undue advantage when it comes to the plank. It’s just a matter of whether you get down and ever practice it

"Mental Edge" Monday: Power of Daily Practice

Mental Edge Monday Topic #8: The Power of Daily Practice I wanted to share a personal story about an episode I experienced while deployed with my SEAL platoon. I hope it illustrates how little habits, practiced daily, can yield outsized results. It’s kind of a goofy story, but there’s a lesson that I’ll never forget. My SEAL platoon was deployed on a ship with 750 Marines. Our platoon wasn’t on the ship that often, but when we were, we had some epic (good-natured) trash-talking sessions with the onboard Marines. Classic stuff about who was tougher, stronger, sent in first, etc. Halfway through the deployment, the ship decided to sponsor an MWR (Morale, Welfare, Recreation) fundraising event. All the money went toward food, movies, snacks, etc

Mental Edge Monday: When do people fail?

Mental Edge Monday Topic #14: When do people fail? No, that is not a typo in the headline. I want to explore the “when” versus the “why” people fail in reaching their goals. We are all too familiar with the conventional reasons why most people fail to follow-through on goals – laziness, lack of willpower, unrealistic goals, lack of knowledge on how to reach their goal, etc. I’ve become fascinated not by the “why”, but the “when.” Of course, these two notions are interrelated, but the “when” gives us a much more granular level of insight into the psychology behind failure. Let me propose a fictitious person/scenario to explore this concept further. Here are some assumptions: Name: John (married, 1.5 kids, 38 yrs old) Occupation: web developer (8am-6pm, 5 days a week) Exercise: occasionally (when he can squeeze it in) Eating habits: mediocre Goal: lose 15-20 lbs before his H.S
