(Excerpted from Consumer’s Guide to Homeopathy, Tarcher/Putnam)
Most people with a little experience in homeopathy have no doubt that these medicines work, though inevitably they will have some family members, friends, neighbors, and physicians who will be skeptical about it.
One way to deal with these people’s skepticism is to become familiar with research on the efficacy of homeopathic medicines.
There is actually considerably more laboratory and clinical research on homeopathic medicine than most people realize. That said, it must also be recognized that more research is certainly needed, not simply to answer the questions of skeptics but to help homeopaths optimize their use of these powerful natural medicines.
Some skeptics insist that research on homeopathy is mandatory since the exceptionally small doses used do not make sense and there is no known mechanism for action for these drugs. While it is true that homeopaths presently do not know precisely how the homeopathic microdoses work, there are some compelling theories about their mechanism of action (see the discussion in Chapter 1, “The Wisdom and Wonder of Small Doses”).

Your child’s scream rips through your meditative peeling of lunch apples. “Mom! I slammed into the wall!â€
“Mommy’s coming!†you holler, dashing by the medicine chest to pull out a few tubes of homeopathic remedies. You are prepared for this (and many other emergencies) with your own handy-dandy homeopathic first aid kit.
Life’s bumps, bruises and burns are easier to handle if you have a few remedies on hand to administer as the need arises. So tuck these and other remedies that you find especially useful in with the bandages and witch hazel. Here’s a jumping off point for some of the common needs of children.
Aconite 30C works best for the first symptoms of colds, flu, fever, restlessness, throat complaints, anxiety and fear. The early stages of croup can benefit from Aconite. This is the sudden onset remedy. If you miss that, then you’ll need to consider other remedies.
AGE 30C is a combination remedy using Aconite, Gelsemium and Euphrasia recommended for colds and flu. One dose every two weeks will reduce the incidence of colds and flu.
Apis mellifica 30C is excellent for insect bites and hives.

Ok, you’ve got a cold or just banged your knee hard. What’s the best dosage for a homeopathic remedy? To figure out the best dosage, you need to consider many factors: whether the condition is acute (sudden onset) or chronic (present for a longer time), the severity of pain and even your age.
The subtlety behind homeopathy stands out when we assess the dosages required for various situations. In general, acute situations warrant lower dosages given more frequently, while chronic situations call for higher potencies given less frequently.
Controlling acute conditions
Typical acute scenarios include a blow to the body, the onset of a cold or an illness or injury that has just happened. In these cases, administer frequent low doses of a remedy until you get relief of the symptoms.
When the school nurse called me to say my son’s head had banged into a schoolmate’s head on the playground, I grabbed my arnica montana pellets and ointment and drove over to the school. His teacher said she sent him to the nurse after his face swelled up. They had been applying ice to his left cheekbone. After talking with Joey for a minute, I gave him three pellets of 30c arnica and smeared a layer of arnica ointment on the affected area. I continued that course of treatment every hour until he went to bed that night. Next morning, there was no indication of injury.

Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843) was the founder of Homoeopathy. He established the fundamental principles of the science and art of Homoeopathy.
He is called the Father of Experimental Pharmacology because he was the first physician to prepare medicines in a specialized way; proving them on healthy human beings, to determine how the medicines acted to cure diseases. Before Hahnemann, medicines were given on speculative indications, mainly on the basis of authority without experimental verification.
Hahnemann discovered the remedial powers of drugs and inert substances such as gold, platinum, silica, vegetable charcoal, lycopodium, etc. By preparing the medicines through potentization, these inert and insoluble substances became soluble in alcohol or water and were charged with medicinal force.
Dr. Hahnemann espoused the law of cure known as “Similia Similibus Curentur”, or “Like Cures Like”. This means that a remedy that produces symptoms in a healthy person will cure those same symptoms when manifested by a person in a diseased state. This law of cure has been verified by millions of homoeopaths all over the world since the time of Hahnemann.

Many of the homeopathic remedies are so diluted that according to the known laws of physics and chemistry, they couldn’t possibly have any effect. Once you get beyond a certain point-24x or 12c -there is probably not even one single molecule of the original active substance remaining. This fact is often pointed to by critics of homeopathy as they dismiss the effect of homeopathy as merely due to placebo effect.
And yet, according to homeopathic doctrine and experience, the more diluted the solution, the more potent it is. Homeopaths contend that the remedies work and they see no reason to stop using them simply because we do not understand how they work. They often argue that pharmacologists cannot explain exactly how most conventional drugs work. For example, even aspirin is not fully understood in terms of how it works, but physicians have no difficulty in recommending its use.
Over the years several theories have been proposed to explain the action on homeopathic potentization.
Hormesis
The effects of microdoses have been known for a long time, and there are a number of examples that support the idea that very diluted concentrations of a substance will have a measurable and sometimes profound effect. Scientists call this phenomenon: hormesis.

Samuel Hahnemann was the third child [of five] and eldest son of a pottery painter in the porcelain town of Meissen in Saxony. As a child, he showed a remarkable aptitude for study [Cook, 28], excelling both in languages and in science; he was fluent in English, French, Greek and Latin. Even “at the early age of 12 he helped his master to teach Greek,” [Haehl, vol. 1, 13] to other students. Hahnemann was “a pupil of exceptional ability,” [Cook, 24] with “an exceptional talent for languages;” [Haehl, vol. 1, 13] he “was drawn irresistibly towards science and research.” [Haehl, vol. 1, 14]

You’re strolling though your friendly enlightened grocery store and come to a shelf of tubes and assorted containers with numbers on them: 6X, 30C, 12X. What is this? Sizes? Algebra?
Welcome to the world of homeopathy. Those numbers refer to the potency or strength of each remedy. To better understand the meaning of the numbers, let’s examine how the remedies are made.
Mother tinctures
To start, a “mother tincture†is made from a substance. The substance can come from plants, animals or minerals. An amount of a given substance is coarsely chopped, then added to an alcohol and water mixture in a glass jar. (If a substance is insoluble, then it ground up with lactose or milk sugar.) There it sits for a few weeks, with occasional shaking to ensure the matter and liquid are mixed. Then the liquid is pressed out and drained off into a dark bottle. You now have a “mother tincture.â€
To make a 1X remedy, one drop of tincture is triturated (diluted) with nine drops of alcohol/water — a total of 10 parts (note that X is the Roman numeral for 10). Then it is succussed (agitated thoroughly). One drop of the resulting mixture is then added to another none drops of alcohol/water and succussed to give a 2X potency.

Homeopathy has been practiced for generations before modern medicine, with herbs and potions. The word is easily translated. Homios, coming from Greek, means “like.” Homeopathy then is simply the medical practice of treating like with like. Who hasn’t heard of using “the hair of the dog that bit you” to make you feel better?
The principle was known to Hippocrates and Paracelsus; however, the main debt of those who follow homeopathy is to Samuel Hahnemann, M.D., a great doctor of the eighteenth century. Dr. Hahnemann, appalled by the existing medical practices, which so often did more harm than good, sought a method that would be safe, gentle, and effective. He believed that human beings have a capacity for healing themselves, and that the symptoms of disease reflect the individual’s struggle to overcome the forces of antagonistic to live. The physician’s work must be to discover, and if possible to remove, the cause of the trouble, and stimulate the vital healing forces of nature.

Prostatitis. Premature ejaculation. Arthritis. Erectile dysfunction. And gout. These are just a few of the extremely common conditions that are constantly presented to me by male clients, friends, and family members. Often, they consult me as a sort of “last resort.” I’m a homeopathic practitioner, after all, and many people in my world consider homeopathy to be an “alternative” medicine that is a little too “woo woo” to treat such “manly” disorders.
However, homeopathy is a 200-plus-year-old medical science that is fully regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And all remedies recognized by the well-respected Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS) have been tested and proven effective in carefully controlled clinical trials.
Homeopathic Remedies Work–Without Dangerous Side Effects
Once I explain homeopathy’s impressive credentials to skeptical male clients, and once they experience the powerful and positive effects of the right homeopathic remedy, most men I work with become homeopathic evangelists for life. Why? Because homeopathic medicines work quickly and effectively–without the dangerous side effects associated with many conventional treatments, over-the-counter drugs, and prescriptions.
Finding the Right Remedy for Your Condition
Many common male conditions can be treated quickly and effectively with homeopathy. These include:

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is the pain caused by a compression of the trigeminal nerve, the largest of the twelve nerves in the cranium. The trigeminal nerve is primarily responsible for sensation in the face and one of its three branches is responsible for the movement of the jaw as well.
One of the major causes of trigeminal neuralgia is the erosion of the nerve sheath which is actually a loss of the myelin covering of the nerve. Some other causes may include compression by an adjacent blood vessel, physical damage by dental or other surgeries, genetic predisposition or rarely, a tumor or multiple sclerosis. Abnormalities usually occur at the inner nerve fibers that carry the sensation.
The trigeminal nerve is similar to other sensory nerves like the sciatic nerve in the spinal region and the pain caused by compression can be as excruciating as sciatica. Most of the conventional treatments approach TN in a similar fashion as sciatic nerve treatment.
There is no specific remedy available for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia in homoeopathy. It is in the case of such symptoms and diseases where the holistic approach of all alternative therapies proves to be a handy tool in treatment. The homoeopathic approach to TN is to treat the overall symptoms and to strengthen the body so that it can heal itself.
